Installing flat panel TV

Postby Gentleladybear » Sat Dec 26, 2009 12:36 pm

I am working on a project. My son gave me a 22 inch flat panel tv for Christmas. I have managed to get the old heavy tv out, and thinking I want to put a door in the 21 x 21 inch hole and hang the tv on the door.

Would anyone have a suggestion as to where I can get a door, or how I can make a door? I am thinking that I need to use a piano hing on the door for stability and a good latch on the other side for further stability. If anyone can offer suggestions here would welcome them.

Nan, try the dealer where you bought the RV, or the manufacturer, or even try a RV salvage yard (probably any salvage yard might have an RV or two rusting out). I'm sure HD or lowes, etc would be able to cut one to size for you, just take another one in as a template. (that would probable be the cheapest way, then stain it to match as the TV would hide most of the door.) Just a few thoughts. Enjoy the TV, nice Christmas present. Linda

Can't remember what travel unit you have. My suggestion would be to sit in the chair/couch you'll be viewing from and make sure it's the right height and angle. It might be a little different mounted on a door. Looks like you got a great present. carold

Nan, I did basically that - but didn't put the tv on the door, put it on the side of the cabinet with an arm that turns to face any direction. Works great. Can take a picture later if you want, but not sure when I'll be back on to post it.

As to the door, just got plywood, stained it the golden oak color. It was put on with hinges from the top. Didn't put in the arm to hold it up, so I have to do that with my head, but works fine. I put in magnets to catch the door at the bottom, didn't like those. At an rv repair place, I was able to purchase for a few dollars the type of catches most of my doors have, and replaced one of the magnet catches with one of those - and now I LOVE it.

Good luck - I had some help doing this, but designed and planned it myself and it's such an improvement over what was there. And where the door was attached was definitely strong enough - I wasn't sure the door would have been - and then everytime I opened it, it would mean the tv would have to move also.
