here are some pics of the kids. first one is my 5th grader grandson and his Ayrshire heifer...
Image
and he won Grand Champion (Ayrshire breed) for it!
Image
Now he's back showing his Jersey cow
Image
My 9th grade granddaughter took Grand Champion for the Jerseys with her cow and my grandson took Reserve Champion
Image
Here's the whole 4-H club with the club herd.... my littlest grandson is on the end, out of sight with his Holstein calf. Unfortuantely the solo pic of him was blurry. I'll try again on Friday at the Open cattle show to get one of him.

Great looking kids with beautiful animals. Reminds me of my 4-H days back in VT as a kid. We had Jerseys and Angus on our farm.

We had a Jersey milk cow too! She was so sweet. That is the most beautiful heifer, no wonder he won with her!! Thanks for sharing, it's almost as good as a visit to the fair.

What a good thing for your Grandchildren to be involved with! I can't decide which I like best the Ayrshire or the Jersey, the Aryshire has beautiful markings. Thanks for the pictures.

Okay.....another 4-H winner.....got the news last night.....My niece, Abby, got 2nd place and Reserve Grand Champion at the the McKean County Fair last week...
McKean county is in the Northwest, kinda' central, part of PA.....on the state line with NY.....My sister didn't send me photos, but I took one when I was home in June.

Abby, Ox, the 4-H beef steer, and Abby's Dad, my brother,Brent.
Ox, is a Red Angus, Semital mix....so their fair catagory was "grade beef".....
This steer weighed in at the fair at 985 pounds......he was sold at the fair auction at $1.15 per pound......the kids get to keep the money...so Abby's almost a $1000 richer in the college account....we're all proud.....

These pictures bring back bittersweet memories for me.....I was in 4-H and had a steer that I showed....if you have never gone through the process of working with a calf from the time they are a baby through the whole training process you have no idea how attached you become to that animal. Well somewhere along the line someone neglected to tell me what was going to happen to my dear Bud after the State Fair. It was quite a tramatic experience. I was that little 12 year old girl with a best of show ribbon in her hand....bawling her eyes out...with my dad trying to comfort me...and saying...did you really think he was going to be a pet for the rest of his life? I never showed cattle again.
My mind works like lightning...one brilliant flash and it's gone.

Lori,.....WOW! Congratulations to Abby and "Ox".... How nice that she took home that Reserve Champion title.

And Pat,... our cows are dairy animals so they will have a long life (hopefully) producing milk here on the farm. I can see why you didn't show cattle again! That must have been tough for you,... so sorry!

Congrats, Lori.

Pat, fortunately I was a city girl, cuz I never could have let my animal go - especially knowing it wouldn't survive long. My cousins were on the farm and with 4H and one year one of them had a hog that won - and she bawled like you - and they took that hog back home with them! She just couldn't bear the thought of her "baby" not surviving. Me, I had trouble every time we went to the farm and I knew we were eating animals for dinner that I might have been seeing running around the day before. They learned they couldnt kill the chickens in front of me - I just couldn't handle it. Almost made a vegetarian out of me.

All that said - it's good for those that can do it - and it's a good thing so many can - I always wonder if I'd have been able to hunt and skin etc if I had been born in a different era. Not sure about that.
