Almost forgot: called "ducks," rock stacks are used to mark the way on trails in the wilderness. These are on the trail to the lake from Josephine Creek Lodge in Northern California, where I worked last summer.

I had to wait until I had good Internet connection to view the links. I loved the second one especially! If I won the lottery I'd employ him to do one in a lake or a pond. Ah me, all this taste and no money to show it!

Isn't that one in the water great? I'd never seen anything like it. There are so many more on the beach in Cardiff than I found pictures for.

Would never have guessed there was such a thing as a professional rock stacker. What a great way to play and get paid, not to mention staying in shape.

we have a family reunion every other year with my mom siblings and all the kids.... several years ago as we were sitting around the fire our son sat there and stacked these small rocks up for something to do...had stacks of stacks little did we know!!! should have been more encouraging

Rock-stacking has always been present in BC where I grew up and in most parts of northern Canada. In fact, the traditional ones, stacked not just as trail markers but in the shapes of human figures are known as Inukshuks (Inuit word), pronounced Eee-nook-shooks and respresent hopes for safe travel. They are the official representation/icon for Vancouver's upcoming winter olympics so you will be seeing them a lot in the coming months...

The artist (Goldworthy..I think) he is the one that has the artistic stone fences and does the art with leaves.....My daughter recently shared with me a video of his displays of stone structures...on beachs, in fields (through all the seasons)....it also showed the building process....and some of the failures before he was able to complete a project....
