Some of you may remember I purchased a new Toshiba in mid-August. Guess what computer I'm on right now? My old Dell. It caused me trouble all through AK and I thought uhoh - bought the new one when a tech thought the problems were too expensive to fool with. Paid to make sure I got everything necessary off the old computer and into a file on the new one - and guess what. The old computer has not had a problem since. I tried to get used to the new one with the bells and whistles - but I like my old one better - even though it is slower. I will conquer the new one one of these days. But there is one program on the old one that I use to build my websites, that I don't really want to move right now - so maybe I'll be a 2 computer rv.

Karen, I empathize, really I do - this new computer did not make me a happy camper like when I bought my last 2 laptops. And, I spent hours on the phone to get my phone tethering correctly - it only worked once. Ahhhhhhhh - that has to get fixed as soon as I leave here. Turns out that the method I used on the Dell wasn't available with the model of Toshiba I purchased. Why does something new not have all the methods? And the method I have to use is more tedious - and, as I said, only worked once - but I'll be back getting it working again next week.

Good luck Karen - don't want you throwing it out the window!

I haven't 'moved in' to it yet as it doesn't have a current virus protector and this one hasn't run out yet, ,AND im not sure if I have the disc to install my printer! GRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.... sure hope so, when the time comes for me to HAVE to change over! ! !

thanks for reading..

Janet, Windows 7 is the newest operating system 'OS', after XP, I believe.
Have you seen on the news that in Japen, to celebrate the Windows 7, their Burger Kings are offering a burger with 7, yes 7, patties on it?! :o

Beth, perhaps your older computer is running better b/c you removed allot of files off it? Just a thought.
I do agree that when they make 'newer' they don't allow for "older' to run smoothly along side it.
I use Quicken Money and got an email that the 2006 edition I used was no longer going to be usable and was FORCED to pay to upgrade to 2009 or do without!! When I upgraded I followed the directions: backed up all my files to transfer to the 2009 version, and then was instructed to totally remove the 2006 version or it would cause problems with the 2009. Well, when it came time to transfer the files I found out that the new 2009 would only except the last 1 month's saved files ! Talk about one angry woman!! I was tempted to switch to MS Money but have found out that they are no longer making that program! I don't know of any other program that compatible to my banking institutions etc.

oh SURE! they are not dumb! they are SLY! they WANT you to HAVE to buy new programs! If they didn't.. would they be outta business?

Just sayin....................................
)

The funny thing is,, when I first got a computer....I was under the assumption that they are obsolete every year or so. That is SO not true.. Are they the "latest thing" .. NO... but can we continue to "compute" just fine w/ an older model.. well.. as I said in an earlier post,, i'm in an old compak that has windows 2000 on it........... so there!

Janet, there's a free program called AVG Anti Virus that I have been using for a while and haven't had any problems. My computer guy recommends it and he does the computer work for the local school board. AVG has one you can pay for but the free one works just fine for me.

I used an old Apple IIC that I bought for my son in about 1986 to keep the farm books on until I lost it in 2005 when our house flooded. It was easier to use than have to buy a new program and have to learn it. I held my breath every year that it would crash when I was trying to get my tax work done but it just kept plugging along.

I hated it at work every time they decided to upgrade some program or get new computers. Thank goodness we had a good computer department. They would have to spend a month getting everything to work together and we were the guines pigs that had to find all the problems.

It's the same thing with cell phones. Every time you change phones they don't have one that will work with the chargers you have. That's so they can sell you another $30 car charger. I found out you can buy car chargers at some of the dollar stores for $6 or $7.

I saw the story on the news about the 7 patty hamburger. It was over 2,000 calories.

Ohhhhh - these new computers!!

Lenora - What version of Quicken do you use? I'm still using Quicken 2002 deluxe for my bookwork and have transfered all stuff from the last 4 computers over a period of 10 years or so. Everything seems to go smoothly haven't lost anything yet. I only work on Mac computers and just updated to the new OS Snow Leopard!! There are learning curves though.

I still have all my programs on this old puter - it just decided it didn't want to be "left out in the cold" lol

AVG is a great anti-virus program. And free for personal use.

DItto on the AVG. I've never had a bit of trouble with it.
I ran the paid version of Zone Alarm for a long time and it was a LOT of trouble.

If this old dog wasn't so lazy to learn new tricks, I'd upgrade to a MAC. My son's MAC works like lightening. Click and a new window opens immediately, no waiting. I get so tired of my anti virus running and updating while I'm using this computer. Also I'm sure there are allot of other stuff running in the background that I don't even know about! ;)

One little hint - schedule your virus scans for the middle of the night...I think mine runs at 3:00 AM once a week or day or something...

Karen, Sharon, Janet.....re Kerrville.....the ONLY free time I have this month is next week....5 - 8....maybe we could squeeze a couple days into that window?!? DD has been asked, unexpectedly, to spend a few days in the office in Emeryville, CA, so I will be helping with childcare while she is gone...it's her first trip away from DGD. Then we are planning a camping week-end at Inks Lake on the 14th. And so it goes, if no time, I will get down there in December for sure! :D
