Death rattle ....

Postby Getupngo » Wed Oct 28, 2009 6:45 pm

... that's how my new mechanic described a problem I have brought up with nearly every
mechanic I've taken my rig to. Between 40 mph and 45 mph the whole rig begins to
rattle and the steering wheel shakes violently. My concerns have ALWAYS been dismissed,
saying that's how the Ford chassis handles. I tell them I put new Bilsteins all the way around
and installed the Steer-Safe to address the problem, and they've told me that's all I can do.
But this new guy is the first to test-drive it and says it's NOT normal and he'll get it fixed.
I'll let you all know what it was and how much it cost to fix.

Although this guy has not met deadlines, he's doing a good job, treats me with respect and
makes sure everything is done right. And his prices are really good. Motor Sportsland told
me it would cost about $1,500 to re-seal the roof on my 29-foot Class C. Clay did it on my
35-footer for $850.

For those in Salt Lake City area, it's Clay's RV and Powersports.

I had a friend who had a 3/4 ton Ford pickup and his truck would do that and shimmy all over the road. All is was, was a tire out of balance. You would think the whole front end was going to come out. Hope that may be the worse part of your problem.

I figured it was alignment OR tire out of balance. Hoping so. It does it even when
all the tires have the same pressure.

I thought it was an alignment issue too, but it turned out to be Ball Joints. Didn't even know I had 'em! The fix worked though.

Sounds like it could be balance which is an easy fix. Hope that is it. Tire pressure has nothing to do with it.

Keep us posted about this death rattle! I am very curious to see what the solution will be---I fully expect ball joints, as Sparkle mentions.

The good thing is that you found a mechanic that actually LISTENS to you.
