Looks like no island in my near future ...

I've been telling everyone here that although I was planning to go to San Juan Island on the 25th, I had a feeling I wasn't going anywhere this fall. Then I got an email last night from Mike The Ranger and he said a volunteer couple at the park wants to stay through the winter. He said he'd ask the superintendent for permission to have a volunteer in the other slot. I know he doesn't have enough work for three volunteers during that time of year. Thirty-two hours a week of volunteer thumb-twiddling is not attractive to me.

I emailed Mike back and said it looks like his needs are covered for the season ... and asked how he is set for the spring.

That's where it stands. But I'm still open to finding a volunteer gig. Sooo ... I'm lookin'.

Really sorry we will not get to have our mini-gtg. Maybe next time.
Check with wildlife refuges. I understand many of them are looking for volunteers with their own housing.

Awww, so sorry that your plans fell through, I know you were lookng forward to going back to the island. Well, they say where one door closes another opens, so hopefully something will come along that is even better! I'll keep my fingers and toes crossed for you.

Marda, I'm sorry we'll miss that too. I did check in with my favorite Louisiana refuge, and the ranger says she has volunteers booked up until June 2011. I was wondering whether FT'ers who generally work as they travel are having trouble finding jobs, so are becoming volunteers to ensure a place with hookups to live. Nevertheless, I'm looking on volunteer.gov/gov and checking with state parks. The only opening here has a climate colder than Salt Lake. No thanks. I'll keep looking ...

MikeTheRanger emailed me back and we're on for spring ... just when don't know. I offered
to go in the coldest spring months ... kinda to make up for being a bother this fall. I'm also
looking into some Texas gulf coast wildlife refuges. Don't know if they're full or not, too.
They sure have a lot of 'em.

Janice, sorry your island job is a 'no go' for now. Everything for a reason, even though we may never know the reason, God does. Hope you find the next door He's opened for you.
