It's POSITIVE!!

Postby Forestgal » Fri Oct 09, 2009 6:13 pm

I can't believe that the waiting is over!

I got the toxicology report today, and it's positive for strychnine poisoning!!! What an answer to prayer. I know, it sounds weird to have been praying for a positive outcome, but the alternatives were more than I could deal with. The thought of dealing with a chronically ill dog really did me in emotionally -- especially one that might be on personality-altering drugs for life. But that won't be the case. Jed will be on the phenobarbital for at least 4 months to prevent the possibility of seizures, but that's okay if it'll keep him healthy.

Anyway, the big thing that I couldn't talk about was this report. I didn't want to ask everyone to pray for it to be positive, just because this is such a public place and I didn't want to jeopardize anything ... I'm rambling. You all know what I mean!

What's important is that my dog isn't sick. He was poisoned and I now have proof. He'll be better, and the insurance company will pay for the campground managers stupid mistake. I've already had a conversation with the insurance agent and it looks like things will get worked out easily. It's just a matter of logistics, as Jed's going to be under treatment for several months and I'd like to get the $8000 off of my credit card. We'll work it out though ...

Okay, I'm exhausted. Time for a nap!

Thanks again for your support and prayers, everyone!

what a financial relief that is!!!
I know Jed still has a ways to go for healing since he'll be on the pheno for awhile,
but with the financial relief out of the way you have better things to concentrate on.

Glad things worked out for you and hope Jed continues to improve. I had a kitten on phenobarbital for 3 months for seizures caused by a high fever and she is fine. It has been at least a year that she has been off the meds and no more seizures.

Haven't had internet access for almost a week and heard about poor Jed from a couple of the girls at the Tn GTG... So sorry about our boy but glad he's going to be ok! He's such a sweetie and just hate to hear when one of our fur babies is sick. What were those people thinking putting out poisen in a CG where there are babies, both the 4 legged and 2 legged type?????

I'm so glad for you and Jed. How does the pheono affect him? My Buddy has some infrequent mild seizures but my vet said the day may come when he'll have to be on meds. He's pretty much of a couch potato anyway so don't worry about it slowing him down.

Karen, his affect is flat -- like the light's on but nobody's there. It also increases appetite & thirst. Fortunately he can't get into any food, but he's drinking like crazy which leads to peeing like crazy. The critical care specialist in Ventura said that it'll take about 2 weeks for the levels of pheno to stabilize in his system and he ought to be about 80% of his normal self. Let's hope -- I'd rather have an obnoxious pooch than one who doesn't have a whole lot of spark. I can still tell that Jed's in there somewhere, though. Certain things just don't change with him -- like wanting to "visit" with the cats. ;)

If he were going to have to be on some sort of meds permanently I'd be looking for something other than the phenobarbital. It's a powerful drug.

Anyway ...

Thanks again. I haven't stopped smiling since I got home. :D

Oh Laura...I am so happy that everything is falling in place. Although nothing should have happened in the first place and poor Jed as gone through hell on earth...as have you...at least Jed is going to recover and you're not going to be responsible for the horrendous bills. I'd still like to have about five minutes alone with that campground manager...what a stupid SOB!

Hi Laura, I'm just catching up after not being on line yesterday afternoon and evening. I'm so glad for this outcome. I hope you get every penny of your expenses covered and maybe some extras too. Give your beautiful boy a hug from me way over here on the other side of the country!

YAYAYAYAY!

What a HAPPY post to read this morning, although I wasn't sure, when I first saw it, that it would be happy and not something horrible for you to have to deal with! Usually POSITIVE test results are NOT something you want to see! HUGE HUGS to both you and Jed, and I can't WAIT to see pics of him as he recovers and becomes his usual self once again. I can remember when phenobarbitol was a usual medication for acute earache pain when I was a kid----or probably pain of any sort. Then, somewhere along the line, they discovered it prevented seizures, too, and has become a primary drug for that use today.

What a relief! His steady progress, from not being to cease seizures, to having to have been rendered unconscious, to regaining consciousness, to not being able to walk, to walking, and more-----proof that he will come around to your old Jed before you know it!

And, thank heavens the campground had insurance to cover that horrendous medical bill! The owners certainly knew what they were doing, even though, I am hoping, the manager will be fired and permanently kept from ever managing a campsite again!

Big hugs to both you and Jed from me and Molly
