Update on our Fall Trip

Postby ali1257 » Thu Oct 01, 2009 8:10 pm

Thanks Kristy for posting about our trip plans. Below is the summary of the trip and our new plans.

As Kristy mentioned we made it no problem to Lewiston, ID but when we left the mh was acting like it was gasping for gas so we stopped and got a new fuel filter put in. Seemed to correct the problem until we were on Lolo Pass just outside of Missoula, MT. The mh just could not make it up the pass, it kept dying so we finally pulled off in a big turnout and spent the night. The next morning we were towed to Missoula GMC/Chevy dealer. They diagnosed the problem as we needed a new fuel pump. We spent the night in the car dealers lot - they let us hook up to electric :)

The next day after getting the repairs we drove back to Lolo Pass to pick up the trailer and then got back on the road. As we tried to make it up another pass the motor home could barely climb. After a lengthy discussion we decided that the problem is that the motor home doesn't have the umph to pulll the trailer with the explorer on it. So we decided to spend a couple of days in Alder, MT, sight seeing Virginia City and the surrounding areas and then return home.

Our return trip contained a two night stay in Missoula while we did more sight seeing. Rode the coolest carousel in Missoula. We left Missoula on Tuesday and drove to Smokey Pt, WA - a long day of travel but the motor home did okay though climbing the 4 different passes were definitely slow and steady. We arrived home yesterday afternoon after a stop at Camping World - the wind pulled the A/C cover off on Tuesday.

So last night we sat and talked and decided what to do...we have this time scheduled off and the itch to travel so after another night of discussion we have decided to take another trip minus the tow trailer and vehicle. We are going to leave Sunday after church.

We plan to go to Tacoma Camping World first to pick up the A/C cover (the one in Burlington didn't have any in stock). We then will go to Chehalis, WA, Bend, OR, head over to Utah and to Bryce Canyon (thanks for the suggestion Kristy) and then on to Tucson, AZ to see relatives and then to Las Vegas (hubby plans on renting a motor cycle for the day) and then to MIddletown, CA to see my Aunt & Uncle for Thanksgiving and then return home.

As soon as we dropped the trailer/explorer the motor home drove like it is supposed to.

I will add here (because you will all understand) I never once said "I told you so" (that the motor home couldn't pull the trailer/explorer) but hubby did say on Monday as we headed back to Missoula towards home "I'm sorry for not listening to you." I just chuckled inside and thought maybe next time he will listen to me

I lived in Missoula MT in the 70's... and my son was born there. Husb was a deputy there. Town has changed a BUNCH! I was back there in 89 and so I'm sure it's changed even more! It's pretty there, tho', isnt it? I had moved there from Dallas, so, to say the least, was a culture shock, but a great one! After that I was hooked on mtns and small towns! Never again for THIS girl, city life! :)

Sorry about your problems w/ the towing a load up the passes. I remember how hard it is to just get the MH by itself up those hills! That's why i'm thinking of a motor scooter as my 'getaround' vehicle when I go. Yes, I know it will limit what I can carry with me,, but it's all about sight seeing, is it not? If i need groceries, etc.. they have big parking lots! :)

happy trails, gals!

Glad your trip is going to work out, even if it's different than originally intended. re: your DH,... that's awesome that he did say that. My X would have cooked up some other excuse and never admitted. Kudos to yours! :D

it seems like when you RV plans get changed so go forward as planned other not quite so you have make a change in your orginal plans we were discussing int one day and I think it was Trudy that coined the phrase jello plans. in that plans shift a bit like jello does and if you look at that way you are so likely to get bent out of shape because plans changed....sorta that anyway
Did I do ok in explaining it???
