Ya think I could cook with the Dutch Oven (using charcoal) under my awning?
I think "YES", but I am not very experienced.
I guess wind would have an impact, of course...

I think that would depend on if you are allowed fires outside of a fire pit or would you streeeeeeeeetch your awning all the way to the fire pit, LOL.

I have that thing I built - 2 oil pans screwed together bottom to bottom for DO charcoal cooking...guess I'll have to ask.

Mitch, I really don't see a problem with using the DO under the awning. One can use one's BBQ where they want can't they? There will be no sparks from the BBQ coals, so no problem there. I suppose one could call the CG, but from your other calls you get conflicting answers. I would just go ahead and then apologize if not allowed. ;) Linda

... just make sure you close the windows on the "cooking" side of the RV. :)

Heck, I wasn't worried about permission - I was concerned about setting my awning aflame!! Image

But maybe no concern is necessary - looks like the weather is improving a bit!!
By next week, it'll be all sunshine and light breezes - let the good times roll (especially if Vickie stays home...)

No different than on a patio with a roof - but be careful to watch the flames in case there is wind - which you have to do awning or not.

Starting up a charcoal fire with lots of flame could scorch some areas of your awning if the grill is sitting on a table especially. The biggest problem -- soot and grease could take up residence on the underside of your awning and be a pain to clean off. Having a good breeze would be a benefit -- help send the smoke out. If the campground bans charcoal grills even under an awning they would probably say no. But if they have no such restrictions -- I'd say it is doable.

Be sure and set the grill on the ground! i've done that and it worked...

some people use a 'chimney' to cook there coals in therefore no flames it's suppose to make the brickets get to the right doneness faster when ready you just pour them where needed ie under and on top of dutch ovens ....it should work under your awning

Hey Mitch....I musta missed the "oil pan" set up? did you post a picture? Sounds like just the thing for getting the DO off the ground. More details please? What are you going to cook in the DO? My last creation was a peach and blackberry cobbler, very yummy!

Oh, and I don't see any problem cooking under the awning either, in fact, if it's cool, drizzly weather, that's perfect for dutch oven meals.

Here's what I built with the oil pans. It still burned the grass below, though! So, next time, I'll try using a ceramic tile on the grass! (yeah, I know the 4-wheeler needs hosing...). I'm pretty new at DO cooking, but I make this DO Pizza Casserole that we just love! And I've made a couple of Dump Cakes in the little one. For the TN GTG, I plan to make a Chicken & Rice With Cashews and Orange Zest (no recipe - just a concoction...) for my dinner one night.
