The Gettysburg side trip

After leaving the PA GTG, Peggy and I followed Lori and the Sultan south to their summer campground back in the South Mountain area west of Gettysburg. The Sultan grew up in Gettysburg and had offered to take us on a tour of the area. If he evers offer...take him up on the offer! First he gave us homework, he encouraged Peggy and I to watch/rewatch the movie Gettysburg. It was filmed on location and it does give you a view of the landscape and a reminder of what major happenings occurred before and during the battle/s. Then they drove us around the major sites and followed up with a stop at Lori's favorite museum...that had a diorama had short film that again summed up everything we had just seen....plus a few other historical details..... The final examine was held at the appropriately named "Ernie's Texas Hots" restaurant.....good hot dogs topped with mustard, onions, mild texas chili...Ernie will fill in what ever I am leaving out...

The Monument of Lee and the his soldiers around the base representing all the walks of life that volunteered to fight in the army of the south.


Lori's favorite! But now I can't remember...I think it is Longstreet...one foot up meaning he was wounded during the war.


View from the top of Little Round Top...defended on the second day by Chamberlain from attemps by the Confederate soldiers to flank the Northern Army.


Looking the other direction from the top of Little Round Top back toward the rest of the line and down over the peach orchard, wheatfield and other important battle areas.


At the other end of the line was the other rather tall hill.....thats Lori and Ernie down there on the ground watching Peggy and I climb the tower that gives a view back over the battle area and the town of Gettysburg. Their job was to stay on the ground and be prepared to call for EMS if either Peggy or I collapsed during the climb to the top. I believe the topic of "rubber legs" came up later as a result of the climb.



These are pictures from the campsite down by the creek that we retreated to to recover from our adventure. It was beautiful.








And the pups, after several went swimming in the above creek and the pond beyond....attemping to dry out before coming back inside

Doesn't it kinda give you goose bumps to imagine people so many, many years ago fighting a war in the very places you were standing???

Oh, Tina...these are so great!!!! And yes, that is the Longstreet monument and my favorite .....It is the most realistic one in the whole park....and the youngest as it was place there, I believe either summer of 1999 or 2000.....

We so enjoyed showing you around the Park....if I ever get enough signal I got a photo of you at the top of that there tower...

Glad you and Peggy enjoyed the GTG and the visit to Gettysburg....we just got to do it again....

I haven't been to Gettysburg since spring of 1960 (senior class trip to D.C. and NYC) ... but I did visit Antietam and Harper's Ferry a few years ago. I always get chills and can almost hear the voices. Thanks for taking us along!

The campground is especially inviting in the summer season when Lori and Ernie are there!! It was like staying in a very special guest bedroom! Most of the sites are very nicely kept seasoners with a small number of overnite spots....all along a creek....

Great pics. I was at Gettysburg in august with my 2 sisters, one BIL. and 3 kids. We went to the visitor center and walked thru the museum and went to the show they have - done by the folks at Discovery Channel - they do a phenomenal job and then to the 360 degree diorama of Pickett's Charge. Reaaly cool and everyone liked it from my Swedish brother in law to my 8 year old nephew. Then we wanted to do a driving tour so Aunt Kellie bought the dramatized CD(same price as the plain narrative) and the kids loved it. While we were stopped at one of the sights a troop of guys in Civil War uniforms marched up the road to where we were and then had a little ceremony. They were having some kind of re-enactment event that weekend. All in all, a great day. I love our national parks. It always gives me goose bumps to stand on sites where such events took place - I think it help us remember not to take our country for granted and reminds us of the struggles our ancestors faced. I'll try my luck with phootbucket later and post my pics also.
