Me and Little Missy have an outing.

I finally got the last of the 'stuff' bought/taken out to Little Missy late this morning. As the traffic has finally died down from the holiday weekend and school starting I felt it was a good time to take her for a spin. Got her all ready to go and pulled out of the storage place and Choco, my furbaby, started shaking like a 9.0 earthquake was happening in his seat!! Then came the excessive panting and licking his lips. I tried calming him best I could but no dice. I did get some meds from the vet for him in case this might happen so next time I'll drug him up first. I wanted to be sure he needed them first. Poor little guy. I did drive the MH home and dropped him off so he wouldn't suffer any longer. From there I drove about 8 miles to Dollar's Corner where I found as easy in and out place to get LPG. My tank was at 1/3 so decided to do that. Of course there was a big delivery truck parked close enough that I couldn't get up to the tank, but it worked out ok. I asked if he was going to be there long and he said no, so I just waited until he moved. Got $13.16 worth of propane and then headed back to the storage. All went well. Took two tries to back her in, but did good!! Came home with a grin on my face!

I found a State Park about 30 mi. north from here that I'm going to do my 'trial run' at. Probably after next weekend.

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it!

Way to go on your first outing!!! Poor Choco, why was he so scared, did he think he was going to the vet or something? Maybe if he has a small kennel that would fit in Little Missy you could bring that so he would have something of "his own" in there.

He was in his own carseat. The same one I use in the car. He doesn't ride well in the car either, but hasn't gotten to this extreme.

Poor Choco. I hope someone has some ideas to help him. Do you plan on taking him whenever you travel?

When we first got Abby, I made sure we took her on lots of little rides and got out and walked her and had some fun really often so she wouldn't be scared to go in the car. Thank goodness it worked! She's a great little rider now.

I hope you can get the poor guy some relief! Maybe if you do it more often, he'll get better?

Go ahead and drug him up. I once had a Maltese that never got used to being the car. When I first got Sassy she had some issues and I did what Mitch suggested. Took her for a short drive, got her out to play then back home. She's now fine and loves to travel. Buddy's attitude is: "Are we moving?"

Glad you got out for a little spin. I'm so sorry to hear about your little furbaby and that he doesn't do too well in the car either. Taking it slow and easy with him with a lot of patience. My furbabies love to ride, but they also love to bark while in the car/PW. Keep having fun in Little Missy.

Good job! sometimes it's the little things like getting fuel or propane that are the scariest! Which is why if I have to fuel anywhere except a truck stop I start shaking like a leaf! I just know I'm not gonna make the corner or I'm gonna take out a pump. Getting on the hiway and driving is the easy part!

You done good, Bravo! Before long it will seem like you have been doing it forever. Have fun. Poor furbaby. Sometimes they get carsick and there is nothing to be done about it.

Dramimine. Works for Fred...he doesn't travel well at all...never has, never will. But it is by weight, so since he is small - 11 - 12 lbs ish, I give him 25 mg. Probably cheaper than the drugs your vet is giving you too.

I have a friend that has a setter that doesn't travel well and the vet said to give him benedryl. She said it works like a charm. I had a german shephard that would throw up everytime she got in the car....she was also bouncing off the walls hyper. She got thrown out of 2 training classes. Drove me nuts. Finally the vet believed me when I told her it was me or the dog....she put her on Prozac and I swear she turned into a totally different dog. No more bouncing and no more puke!

Good for you! and I know you would love your furbaby to enjoy it as much as you. I'm looking forward to seeing pics of your FIRST camping trip. Sharon, I feel the same as you about pulling into a gas station. I'm sure that if we did it enough we would get more comfortable. The first time I pulled so far away the hose wouldn't reach so had to go around again .carold

Lenora, that's great about getting out there and driving Little Misssy. Poor Choco. Maybe the seat is not tall enough for him. Maybe he needs/wants to look out the window? Maybe that would help calm him down while traveling? I had to do that with one of mine. Then again, another doesn't want anything to do with the window, go figure. Just a thought. The more you can get him in LM and showing him the fun times you two will have, the better. Good luck. Linda

Good idea to go to a nearby State Park. I've always said you don't need to drive 100's of miles to be in a different environment. Somehow it's not so scary being fairly close to home when you are just beginning. Also it will be a short trip for Choco, maybe not in his mind though. I hope he gets to like it as having a dog enjoy it as much as you do is half the fun. I can't even tidy my place up without Bogie thinking we are getting ready to head out.

What my vet prescribed is alprazolam, (generic for Xanax). I'll give that a try next run. I have heard that benadryl is another one used.
The car seat is high enough (about 8") so he can see out. Here it is in the car. He wasn't happy with being in it today.
