Where is your GPS mounted?

Where is your GPS mounted?

Postby AlmostThere » Mon Sep 07, 2009 9:44 pm

It just occured to me that when I buy a GPS, will I have to mount it on the dash somewhere? I'm not sure I'd like it there. Will it work if I keep it down by the cupholders?

Yeah, you got your Little Missy on your signature! About the GPS, mine stays in the console, so I'm not one to really answer that question. I know when I bought it, I used it sitting on the car seat, the console and even continued talking to me when it fell on the floor, LOL.

In my car I can reach the window so mounted my TomTom there...in B, I can't easily reach the window so started just leaving it in the cup holder, now I do that in the car too. You can try different places and see what works best for you, it's not a permanent mount.

Good morning!

I didn't like mine on the windshield. Couldn't reach it very easily. So I got a bean bag mount at Walmart, but it was 30 bucks there. Lots cheaper at Amazon, although this is not my exact model.

With the bean bag, you can easily plop it on your seat to remove it from view...don't want to encourage anyone to do something illegal...

Right now my "gps" is my atlas and various road maps .... yep, still using paper maps. I've been fascinated by maps since i was a kid. As I haven't taken a multi-state road trip for a few years I haven't needed any gps. But .... maybe this next summer????? :D

Keep it removeable as GPS units are a high ticket item for thieves. Don't leave it in your RV during storage and hide it when away from your rig.

Mitch, I have the donut which sits on the dash. I have trouble keeping the gps fixed to the donut. The suction breaks and the gps goes flying. What am I doing wrong?

Shirl,
I have the donut also. I just mount it each time I get ready for a trip. You are right, the suction breaks and Geraldine (her name) goes flying. That is the only way I have found to keep it from taking off whenever. If it is especially hot and dry and I'll connect it daily. I carry water bottles in the car and just put a bit on it and reset it. Also, have to clean the suction spot on the donut every once in a while.

Mitch, others what is your magic for the flying GPS?

I keep it in the console. But it doesn't help me find the places I'm going! :o  Should have just kept my money.

Mine comes off every couple of weeks. I make sure the smooth disk and the suction are REALLY clean and then just use a little, tiny lick o' spit, press down gently, and engage the lever.

I got my Garmin. A nuvi 265 WT. Got it at Costco. They didn't have a very big selection, one other Garmin like the one I got but without text to speech, and then a Megellan brand. I owned a Magellan, got it from Costco, about 5 yrs ago. Paid $900 for it! My how the prices have come down! Anyway, at that time I just didn't use it enough so I returned it.

Lenora,
I put mine on the windshield undernethe the rearview mirror, but they are very easy to move since it's just a suction cup. Never had mine fall off yet. I wouldn't think they'd be such an invitation to thieves now since they cost less than $200, way less than most CD/stereo systems. Besides, my RV security system otherewise known as Eddie, would surely take a chunk out of any would-be thief.

Thieves that do smash and grab (like happened recently in Seattle) would sell the units on the street for $50 in order to buy drugs.

Yup. Leaving a GPS (or my fuzz buster) on the windshield or dash is just askin' to get your window smahed in.
