Quick Defrost Hint

Just read this over on rv.net...never tried it, but I am going to today! I'll report back.
Does anyone here have any first-hand experience?

If you want to defrost something fast, take the frozen food and put on an aluminum pan(cookie pan type) and within about 2 hrs you will have that food totally defrosted. The aluminum seens to suck the cold out, GREAT tip huh?

quite a few years ago there were "defrosting trays" sold. Yup, I bought one. Wish I'd saved my money! :lol: Didn't find that it did a better job. However, when I want to defrost something quickly I usually have it already in a zip lock, so I place it in a pan of water..... defrosts very quickly.

Pan of water is my method, also...
shhhhh - don't tell anyone; it's not supposed to be a safe way to defrost...shhhhhhhh.

and my daughter is a nutrition teacher.... hee hee.... But I never leave it there for more than a half hour or so, then I cook whatever it is. I figure for that short amount a time for quick defrost I'm safe. Now in the old days,... you remember leaving something on the kitchen counter for hours? :o

I don't think the aluminum tray thing works for defrosting - just like you (Cedar) said. I have a small pot roast on it and if it was gonna defrost in 2 hours, it'd be a lot far along than it is. I'll stick to my pan of water method!

I have good luck with my new microwave. The old one seemed to start cooking the food...but this one doesn't.
My mind works like lightning...one brilliant flash and it's gone.

it works terrific for anything thats flat, like steak or other small pieces of
chicken. I've never tried to defrost anything big like a roast. Someone
gave it to me many years ago and I've used it many times. Its all aluminum.

I have an electric griddle that stays on the counter most of the time. If I want to defrost something I lay it on the griddle in a zip lock bag. I don't know what kind of metal it is, probably aluminum, but it sucks the cold right out. When our modular house got here after Hurricane Rita the stove was damaged and it took 2 months for the company to get us another stove. We cooked everything on the griddle or in the microwave. Now the griddle is our favorite way to cook.

I bought one of those things like Cedar was talking about several or more years ago. I found that it didn't work at all, it just sat in the back of a cabinet and never came out of it's box, maybe it was taped up too good? :roll: :lol:

I also use the warm water method. I figure if Butterball told you to defrost your turkey that way for years, it's not a bad method. I'm still around, as we all seem to be. I'll stick to the water method. Linda

Did Butterball really say to use that method in the past????? Wow - I'm surprised.
But you're absolutely right - we're all still here and none the worse for wear!

The aluminum tray thingie would not be safe. I had my food service license for my deli in both IL and WI - and water IS ok - just make sure you keep the water running - at least at a drip. Although if I'm going to eat what I'm defrosting that night, I actually heat the water and throw it in like a boil a bag - and it defrosts and starts cooking. Just watch that the bag doesn't have leaks. It works like a charm for me - as I put things in single to 2 person servings in freezer bags in my freezer - to have home-cooked meals all the time. Just fixed a favorite in my crockpot this week and have 3 new bags in the freezer now.
