The 'Left Coast' GTG.......

Postby mtngal » Sun Aug 16, 2009 11:29 pm

....is over but not forgotten! We had the best time. It was so fun meeting Sharon and Evie. Brown's Town RV park and campground had beautiful views of the mountains and the weather was perfect for exploring those mountains.

Evie and Sharon arrived before me and were all set up; with mine our rigs were lined up like the three bears.

Image

At the top of our list was a visit to the Bristle Cone Pines. We listened to an excellent talk by the Ranger and walked the Discovery Trail. Next time we will do the 4 mile loop to see the really old trees. This one was probably only in the 2 -3,000 year range!

Image

We did learn from the Ranger that some of the wood on the ground was close to 11,000 years old.

Image

The Bristlecone Forest is located 24 miles east on highway 168 from Big Pine. On the way back to Bishop we stopped at the bottom of the grade to wade in the Owens River.

Image

Another day we headed west into the mountains. It was happy serendipity to discover Lake Sabrina. A friendly woman took our picture on the dam for you all.

Image

The highest mountains still have snow. We had a cup of coffee with these beautiful views.

Image

Image

There are three large lakes along Bishop Creek in this basin. Sharon drove her intrepid Jeep up a very steep and narrow road to North lake. It's a bit smaller than Sabrina and surrounded by these mountains of the most amazing colors.

Image

We stopped several times along Bishop Creek to check out campgrounds, enjoy the crystal clear water and wildflowers. Evie waved at me through a grove of Aspen trees.

Image

Days exploring the mountains called for a soak in the hot springs. Keough's Hot Springs was build in 1918. The water comes out of the springs at 110 degrees so is cooled by the spray of water at the end of the pool.

Image

Thursday morning we were all a bit sad to be breaking camp, but a final treat was waiting just south of Big Pine....a herd of elk....

Image

It was pure pleasure meeting Evie and Sharon, here's looking forward to next year!

Thanks Diana for posting the trip report! I sized my pictures but photobucket wouldn't recognize my password and then wouldn't let me reset to a new one. Grrrr!! Then I was gone Friday thru Monday, so will try again today sometime to get some photos up. Wonderful trip and we're planning on trying to make this an annual one, we didn't see nearly all there is to see there. Bishop of all places....who would've thunk it??

So PB finally recognized me and using the old password! We had such a grand time and got along famously for 3 such diverse ladies! We ate, which I was a little worried about since we had 1 vegan (Diana), 1 salt restricted (Evie) and a garbage disposal (me), but it all worked out great. We had a dinner at Jacks which was awesome and a dinner at the local Indian Casino which was good. Evie and Diana managed to loose their stash and I came out 10 or 15 dollars ahead. The other 2 dinners we just brought stuff out and shared what looked interesting to us.The Bristle Cone pine trees were top on our list to see:

Road up to the top

Our Ranger..she looked and talked just like Rosie O'Donnel and was a hoot. If it hadn't been for her, we would never have known to look at the trees on the ground, those being the oldest in the forest.

Post of what to look for

Old tree

Loved the twisty wood on this tree

Image

Pretty flowers

Some of the pines are a combination of 2 species, this one had purple cones

Diana by a really old tree

Trail down the mountain

Waterfall on way down from Lake Sabrina

Image

We went to Mammoth one day and found this beautiful view of the mountains on 395

Image

And had lunch at Schots in Mammoth, Diana's treat. Great bread!

Image

This just covers some of what we saw and it was all just gorgeous, although Mammoth was a bust, the drive there was great and we checked out a couple of campgrounds, and stopped at Tom's Place just to see what was there. I just can't resist a road I haven't been up and even was able to put the jeep in 4 wheel drive to go up a road. Diana and I were grinning like schoolkids and poor Evie was holding on with both hands...we did sort of put her through the wringer...but she's a good egg and put up with our shenanigans!

Great pic of the three of you beautiful ladies! And what fun you had! Thanks for sharing about the trees. Isn't it amazing what we just pass by if there's no one to inform us about them? Very interesting, indeed.

Diana, BTW I like your short hair cut, it looks cute on you. At first I was like okay, who's who, so I went back up and looked at your avatar and at your face and knew it was you. :D

So sorry I couldn't make it this go round, but God willing and the creek don't dry up any more, I'll be there with bells on next year. Was on Govt trip to Phoneix and actually got out and did some heavy duty sight - seeing, part of which was 4 wheel driving. Will have to tell ya all about it over coffee sometime (hopefully soon). Glad someone else is a shutter bug junkie like me. Great pics. Miss ya.
