test results

A couple of weeks ago my husband had to have a biopsy of his prostrate. He has had a hight PSA for many years and even had a biopsy early on so we really thought that it would be pretty much the same as it was then just a we will keep a watch on it...NOT turns out he has prostrate cancer which I know is a fairly easy cancer to cure if cought early..sence he was advised to seee a urologist last fall and we kept putting if off until he got supplemental insurance I'm hoping that it is still in the early stages...At this point in time the Dr. thought that it would be ok to stay here in ID at our work camp and plan on going to UT in Sept for the treatments now if the cancer has spread then advice may change. Just thought that I would let you know.

From what I understand, prostate cancer is a very slow-growing cancer. So prayerfully, it will do no harm to wait. You might also want to get a second opinion from an oncologist, specializing in prostate cancer. A friend of mine was diagnosed with early stage and his urologist recommended surgery. He asked to be referred to Moffit Cancer Ctr., where a specialist told him that he would likely die of something else before he would die of prostate cancer and recommended a wait and watch approach, as prostate surgery has some unpleasant side effects. Of course, each case is individual and you should follow the advice of those who know your particular situation. I'll be praying for you both.

Aw, Sheila, my prayers are with you both.

My bil had prostate cancer and is all fine now - as you and Liz and others have said - it seems to be one of the most treatable cancers. I'm praying that will be the case for your husband.

As Liz and others have said, prostate cancer is very slow growing. My brother had it, also, and he saw at least two docs before he decided on his treatment option. He went with the implantation of radioactive 'seeds' (about the size of tiny rice grains) into his prostate gland. That was several years ago now, and his PSA levels have been very low ever since. Unpleasant side effects from this procedure are just about none, he tells me. Your hubby will have several treatment options, and should explore them all.

Now then, it so angers me that our miserable health insurance plans in this country prevent us from getting the care we need WHEN WE NEED IT. This should NOT be happening in a country that is so far ahead in many other aspects of our society. Our health care is out of control and despicable.

Anyway----I suspect he will get the best treatment possible, and as has been said, will probably die from something other than prostate cancer many, many years from now at a ripe old age. However, I know how stressful is that C word-----so I am sending strength and comfort your way as you begin the battle. Thanks for letting us know so we can be there for you both.

We've had 2 or 3 guys in my jeep club with prostrate cancer, each took a different treatment but all are fine now. Thoughts and prayers are flying to you on angel wings my friend, and expect to see you in Q next winter with hubby all well and happy.
