Hi, Ava!

You maybe could try Trader Joe's. Here's a link to their locations around Phoenix/Scottsdale:

Well I'm a Yankee, raised in NH & VT, but never heard of steel-cut Irish oatmeal. I do like oatmeal, and we had it often as kids, as well as Cream of Wheat, Wheatina, and other hot cereals. My first experience with grits was at a diner on a trip to Florida, and I couldn't understand why the waitress put Cream of Wheat on my plate when I didn't order it with my scrambled eggs and bacon!

The question is Liz, did you eat that cream of wheat on your plate?

You have to like grits, fried, creamy or just plain grits with butter...ooooooo so good.

As an adult now living in the South, I have learned to like grits, but then as a child and picky eater, no I'm sure I didn't eat them.

some times when I make oatmeal I put some dried cranberrys (cranraisens) in with the oat meal (I usually mix into the dried oatmeal cinnamon) cook the oat meal and (I use regular don't like the instant for anything but cooking cake or cookies) when I serve it put some sliced almonds on it totally enjoy it

I've been meaning to try steel cut oats so this thread got me motivated. I bought some from the bulk section of my grocery store and cooked it for breakfast yesterday. It took about 12 mins. I didn't need to add much brown sugar to it as it tasted fairly sweet on its own. As I have been dieting since before last Christmas I still count calories and was so surprised at the caloric content! Wow, no wonder they taste soooo good! :o

Oatmeal of any kind makes me gag! And I guess my son feels the same way, as once, years ago when my mother-in-law was taking care of him while I had to go to FL after the death of my father, she made him eat oatmeal before he got on the bus to school. Very soon she got a call from the school to come pick him up as had thrown up all over the bus, himself, and the school hall! Needless to say, she never made him eat oatmeal again!

HOWEVER-----when on a diet once, I tried the instant flavored oatmeals-----and I once forgot the banana-flavored one in the microwave. Later I found it, and I was so starved I tried it cold and solid-like-pudding....I added walnuts to it, and discovered a new dessert! Until now, I had forgoten that I liked it this way. I still have a bunch of those little packets of the flavored instants, and I guess I should try them again as cold desserts. My daughter was horrified when she heard I was eating cold, solidified oatmeal!

Happy travels!

You made me curious if steel cut was more caloric than Quaker old fashioned oatmeal.

Here's what I found - they both have 150 calories per 40g dry. Quaker has 1 more gram of fat (at 3g), and 1 more gram of protein (at 5g). Fiber is the same (at 4g). I don't know about Quaker Oats, but steel-cut is a 1 cup serving (1 C. oats to 4 C. water).

Mitch, when I googled 'steel oats calories' I clicked on several links and both said that 1 cup cooked had around 400 calories. Did not mention any sweetener or milk/cream either. Hmmm.... ;)

Today I made wheat berry salad. I use the recipe from the FoodNetwork, Ina Garten (sp?). Love it! It's a bit on the chewy side, but I love chewy. :D

My DD said she uses a recipe she makes up in her crock-pot that has a mixture of wheat berries, steel cut oats, oat bran, flax seeds and a number of other grains/seeds/nuts. She said it made 10 cups and packed some calories, but grains tend to keep the stomach full longer and the glycemic levels at an even keel.

.

Here's a screen shot off the McCann's website...1/4 C. dry = 1 C. cooked.
I wonder about what's included, because "oats is oats is oats", don't ya think?
(like almost the same nutrition info for Quaker Regular vs. McCann's)???

ON EDIT: Here's an interesting article about the difference between rolled oats (Quaker type) and steel cut...

I found some Quaker Steel Cut Oats at Target today. The 24 oz package was about $3.00. There was a box of another brand too but the Quaker box was cute. I looked at a local grocery store and they had 3 kinds of steel cut oats. One of them cooked in 5 minutes but were about $4.50 a box. I'll try some for breakfast tomorrow.

I liked it but my DH didn't. I like food with a texture. There's no way I would spend 30 minutes cooking oatmeal every morning so would have to cook a big pot of it. There is a web site on the box for recipes, www.quakeroatmeal.com. Will have to check it out and see what else can be made with steel cut oats.
