Does anyone here LOVE Irish Oats instead of regular, ol' Quaker oats?

I was at a business meeting several years ago and knew I would not have time to eat from the breakfast buffet, so I ordered oatmeal from room service. WOW. Next meeting several months later, different city, I again ordered oatmeal from room service. WOWOWOW...just what were these things? I found that it was steel-cut oats and I've never looked back. It's become a requirement for my Yankee friends visiting me - BRING A CAN of IRISH OATS! (can't be found here in NW TN.) YUM.

Oh, GREAT - now I've gone and made myself hungry for some...

Um, :roll: don't eat oats (other than oatmeal cookies) Hommie does, course, he's from Oregon, so he eats those Yankee kind of things. :lol:

This is an honest question - Southerners, as a general rule, don't eat oatmeal?
But you eat grits?

I know what you mean Mitch, goofy, huh! Like why don't Yankee's eat grits at all or as much as oatmeal or cream of wheat?

I've lived in the South now (NW TN) for just over 5 years and only recently tried grits. First time in a local Paris, TN restaurant and they were just awful. YUCK.

Last week, had breakfast at Cracker Barrel in Paducah. Their grits were absolutely out of this world! I could have just had their grits for the entire meal. It was the texture and the strong corn flavor that were wonderful.

Needless to say, I want to be able to cook them just like Cracker Barrel's at home. I think the answer might be coarse stone-ground yellow grits. I've just ordered some off the internet. I have my fingers crossed cuz the stuff available at Wally World and Kroger just don't cut it, either in texture OR flavor.

I eat just grits with a little salt and butter on them, but I prefer to dump them on top of fried eggs, cut them up and mix it all up,,, YUM YUM :lol:

My only complaint about Steel Cut oats is that it takes so long to cook them! I like being able to put my oats in the micro for 2 and a half minutes! Not on the stove for 25!

But they are tasty.

have been going to try them but they are costly and takes so long to cook so haven't yet

Yes, I like them too and also regular Quaker Oats, but...for some reason, I can't eat them in the AM as they do something to my sugar levels and I get the shakes. Nope, I don't add any sugar. I find though I can eat Hodgson Mill's Oat Bran hot cereal with no problems. You only cook it about 5 minutes and I cook it in milk not water. If you like the Irish Oatmeal Mitch you might also like the Oat Bran and maybe you can find in it TN!

I've gotten lazy in my old age,... like my oats microwavable now. And re: grits.... no can do that! sort of like eating old fashioned wall paper paste for this northern gal! But,.. maybe I've not tried them enough. OK, I'll give it another go when i get to a Cracker Barrel next time.

I've not tried the steel cut oats yet but I love regular oatmeal. I lived in the south a while, tried grits, they taste ok but hate the after affect -- having the durn things stuck in your mouth forever - the meal you keep eating for hours!

If you love regular oatmeal, give the Irish oats a try. They take about 45 minutes to cook, but I make a whole bunch and just keep it in the fridge for the rest of the week. Oh, sooooo good with a bit of brown sugar. McCann's is the only brand I know of:

MCann's also makes a "Quick & Easy" natural steel cut Irish Oatmeal that cooks in 5, yes I mean it, 5 minutes. Tastes great and has the little red Heart Healthy decal. carold

Speaking as a southerner born and raised in the south, I love oatmeal. Was in Scotland a few years ago and bought some oatmeal there and brought it home, found it to be an excellent oatmeal. But I had not seen any of it here in the stores, so very glad to know there is someplace to buy them stateside.
