Road Trip Homestretch

Traveling up the coast to Cannon Beach; named for a cannon that washed ashore in 1846.

A very popular event each June is the Sandcastle Contest.

Haystack Rock, the third largest monolith in the world is 235 feet and part of Oregon Islands Nat.Wildlife Refuge. During low tide you can walk out to it and explore the tide pools full of starfish, anemone and crabs. But do not disturb as they are protected.

Next stop is Seaside; the end of Lewis and Clark trail. The salt works marks the site where Lewis and Clark expedition set up camp and boiled seawater to get salt for use at Fort Clatsop and on the return journey to St. Louis.

Seaside has dozens of specialty shops, art galleries, antique stores and fun things. Like a carousel, arcades, bumper cars, and paddle boats.

From here I go on to Astoria and east to cross the Columbia River at Longview, WA and head for I-5 and home. This trip of 1817 miles in 7 days was a journey of discovery so didn't spend much time in any one place. I hope to return one day for a more leisurely visit.

One parting note: not all the wildlife I came across were as easy to approach as the deer in the parks.....

Thanks for taking me along on your trip! I am fascinated by those huge rocks along the coast. And sand sculpture is always amazing. But the carosel made me dizzy!

You may be at the end, but I've been out of touch, so I'm going back to enjoy your road trip from the beginning. Great pictures, thanks.
