Thursday, Sept. 7th

Let's start our day with a good morning here.

Thursday, Sept. 7th

Postby Colliemom » Thu Sep 07, 2023 7:01 am

Morning everyone. Finally got some much needed rain yesterday when the cold front came through. Some rumbles of Thunder as one big storm passed just to the north of here. Was a rather dark day most of the time. But we are now in the low 60’s and there we will remain. Looking at cloudy, scattered shower type day today. Watching the hurricane in the Atlantic, to see what it will do. It’s predicted to turn north as it nears U.S. coast. They don’t always do what they are predicting. The daughter of the neighbors husband who just passed away, lives n FL and may be heading home from here shortly to get prepared. Saw more pictures from Idalia’s wrath at Liz, Nan and Birdie’s community. What a mess. It will certainly change the landscape of the village.

So today I am taking advantage of the weather and do some housecleaning this morning, since it’s too wet to do anything outside. Started painting the fall Duds for the Dress Up Darlings for October and will do more this afternoon. I have the Fall Farmers outfits on the bodies and will put them back out tomorrow. Think the neighbors are getting antsy for some fall decorations out there as am I. But the petunias are in a blooming fit right now. May have to intermix things a bit. I’ve dumped the porch flower boxes out and put them away and think the impatiens won’t be far behind. Will decorate my spot in front of garage this weekend. AFall/Halloween decorating is the next biggest season to Christmas here in Michigan.

Have a nice day all. Some thoughts to think about all the way.

Yesterday, I cleaned my bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen (except for the dishes). Took out the trash, hemmed my bedroom curtains and valances, made tuna salad, etc. So I got quite a bit done. Today will be the living room and maybe the porch. Also need to get gas, a car wash (which I paid for 3 weeks ago!) and drop off some books at the library.

My MRI got moved from this morning to this afternoon, so that will take up part of the day, especially since it is in Palm Springs which is about a 45 min drive each way.

Yesterday I had my ADHD phone consultation which turned out to be a total crock! After problems with checking in on line because they had my information all wrong, I finally got on the call...She tells me that they don't diagnose adults with ADHD because if I did have it, I would have been diagnosed before I was 12, which I wasn't. And it is usually young boys that have ADHD, not girls. I reminded her that I am 62 and back then, they didn't believe that girls had ADHD so there is no way I would have been diagnosed then. Plus, the symptoms I gave her, she discounted every one as normal. She also said that even if I did have ADHD, that I don't need to be treated since I am no longer in school (having problems with learning) and it is not really a problem for me anymore "at my age". Seriously?? :o She asked if my parents were ever diagnosed with ADHD. They were born in the 1920's!! ADHD wasn't even recognized as a thing back then and was barely a thing when I was a kid and only in boys. She also said she wants to see my latest blood test because alcohol can cause a lot of the symptoms I am experiencing. This, after telling her I do not drink and haven't for over 40 years. She wants me to make another appointment, I am not sure why? :? I am not going to make another appointment. This clinic has a 1 star rating out of 5 and terrible reviews, and the whole appointment and checking in process was a mess because they had my information all wrong. Then we got disconnected twice (from her end) while I was on the phone with her. Geeze!!! I waited 3 months for that!? I was so frustrated!

Also found out my electric bill doubled last month! It is almost $200 and is usually around $100 this time of year. I saw on NextDoor that a lot of people were complaining about really high electric bills from last month. I sure hope I can get out from under this house soon!

Our HOA is going up next month $20 which is due to an upgrade with Spectrum and now includes extended cable including the sports channels, and also includes wifi, which I have had to pay on my own ($70/mo) so that will actually save me $50 per month because I won't have that bill to pay anymore. So good news on that deal. :D

So that was the good and bad of my day yesterday

Hope that storm moves away from the east coast like predicted! Sounds like things are cooling off some in the Midwest now. I forget who asked yesterday, but things are dried out around here now. Just a little clean-up left here and there and a couple roads to be repaired and rebuilt.

Have a good day!
Barbie, Romeow, and Sophie, missing Lola! (and lots of ferrets running around in my heart!)

Sue, thank you for posting that. Did you write it? It was truly profound, and oh so true.

One thing I remember doing growing up (that no one believes now that I did when I tell people) is that when I was eight years old, my mother and my best friend's mother (my best friend was also eight) giving us bus fare money to go to a big shopping center that was several miles away.

We would walk to the bus stop unsupervised, wait for the bus, get on the bus, and then get off at the shopping center. We would then spend an hour or two walking around "window shopping", then get back on the bus, ride the bus back to where we started, and then walk back home.

Both of our moms had stayed home!

This was a very normal thing! And I did not grow up in a rural area - this was the San Fernando Valley, a suburb of Los Angeles!!

Of course, there was not so much population in the area then, but can you imagine?? Two little girls going for a day-long adventure??

That would NEVER happen now!

I think the world has forever changed, and not in a good way.

I was also what they now call a "free range" kid. We were tossed out of the house in the morning while our mothers were cleaning and told to come home for lunch. After lunch, we were sent outside again because "the house was clean"! And when I was 12 and my across-the-street girl cousin was 11, her aunt in a Chicago suburb invited her to visit one summer, so they gave us money for lunch and put us on a train from Detroit to Chicago. I was supposedly sent along so she did not have to travel alone!! And we used to ride our bikes all over the place--with money and without. I remember pop-sickles were a nickle and fudgesickles were 7 cents! And in Michigan, almost everyone had a finished, or at least almost finished, basement with old furniture in it, so to escape the heat in the summer, we used to play down there.

Had a virtual visit with an endocrinologist this morning. I have had several blood tests and a cat scan to try to identify cause of life-long kidney stones. Results showed a slightly high parathyroid level and a tiny cyst on my parathyroid which should be removed, but she said it was not an emergency, and we agreed I could schedule it next June when I will be back in Ohio. Also good news is that my platelets have reached a "normal" reading, which they have not been for the past 10 years. My past low platelet level caused bruising and bleeding concerns, so glad they are actually normal now.

Anne, I believed you. I was also 8-9, was given all the bill money to get on the bus and go to the post office to get money orders. I just handed the moms list and the money, then traveled home. Mom filled out the orders and I walked them to the end of the long lane and put them in our mailbox and put the flag up. I also did the grocery shopping. I walked about half a mile to the grocery store, got the cart got everything on moms list, one lack odd cookies, my choice, checked out, paid the bill and they boxed the food and delivered it free. I laugh now, if she wanted a ham she wiuld say, tell them you want the ham the foot comes off. No meat already packaged. No wonder I hate grocery shopping. Lol Mom always said “don’t stop at Edith’s, come right home” I always stopped at Edith’s, mom never asked and I never told. Lol

Anne, I found that on FB. Brought back memories for me too. Rode my bike wherever I wanted, made the mud pies, and stayed out till the street lights came on, walked home from my elementary school by my self etc. Those certainly were the days. I think that we are better all around people because of that. We had experiences that today’s kids never will.

Barbie, sorry you didn’t get any answers on possible ADHD. But there can be other causes too. We all know you love your sweets etc. Eating too much sugar food and the wrong carbs can lead to brain fog, the inability to focus on anything, which causes forgetfulness etc. and can also affects your physical body etc., not just weight gain, but organ fat, back pain, knee pain among other things. Do some research and try an experiment, Stay away from surgery and fatty foods for two weeks. You are addicted to that stuff like an alcoholic is to alcohol. Not easy to break away, but can be done if one pus some effort in. Like the saying goes, you are what you eat :)

Sue, I had seen that before and agree with you that it made us who we are today. And, yes, buses to town or the new mall that was built. I don't know how young I was for my first trip on the train into Chicago with a friend. I know it was before high school.

So far today I've picked up a Walmart order, gotten my oil changed in the car and replaced the windshield wipers that were on their last legs, picked up my free order from Jersey Mike's. It was good. Ty and I walked all around the area where I got the oil change. He kept taking me back to find the car lol. He didn't like that he couldn't go in the service area where HIS car was. So cute. But he's tired out.

I stayed up too late last night so will be struggling to try to sleep early tonight as I'm opening again the next 3 days. It was 49 out this morning when I first woke up, so did get up and turn on the electric heater and crawl into bed again. Ty was under the covers and didn't think of getting up. Tomorrow we'll have no choice. I think I'll set the electric heater at 65 tonight so I won't hate getting up.

Barbie, sorry the consultation didn't go as you expected. I will agree with Anne about some foods to probably avoid and sugar would be a big one and a hard one for you.

Judy, wonderful news on some of those test results.

Good afternoon. Not too much going on in my day today. Been reading, watching a little tv, played on the internet...yup it is a down day today. I need to get busy tomorrow tho Every once in a while it is fun to just be a sloth. I sure dont have many of those day as I like to keep busy but today was different. Teeny problem tho when I am just sitting....I tend to want to munch all day long. I dont have much to munch so the pickings were slim. Had some cauliflower with ranch dip, pretzels, and the last of the watermelon. I have another one to cut up, just a mini one, they dont taste as good as the big ones but geez a gal can only eat so much watermelon. I dont have any sweets except for a box of Healthy Choice Fudge Bars, only 100 calories each with 11g carbs and 5g sugars so not too bad for an occasional treat.

Going to can some tomatoes this weekend. I used to can all the time and lots of stuff when my kids were growing up but seems kind of silly for one person. But I do make spaghetti sauce and freeze it so I can just thaw some out, cook the pasta in my microwave Fasta Pasta and BAM I have dinner. I love that Fasta Pasta, makes life so easy. Making Salmon patties for dinner with a roasted potato and squash. Havent had them in a while. Well time for an afternoon Mocha and will turn on the tv to see if anything strikes my fancy.

I agree that the freedom and responsibility we were given as young kids made us more independent and unafraid to do things on our own. We climbed trees, dug holes in the woods to use as forts, even built fires, as I remember, and some of the things we did were probably a bit dangerous, but what our parents did not know, did not hurt them, so to speak.

I also remember being sent to a small neighborhood store to buy a few things, and it was about a half-mile walk. Only fear I had was having to walk past the house of a boy in my class, who liked to chase me!

And the real truth is that there was NOT less crime in those days. In fact, data shows that there was more crime, but I remember being warned by my parents to stick with other kids and not to talk to strangers, so we were really not left unprepared. It was a good time to be a kid!

Beth, that was Sue that made the recommendation, not me. However, I do agree with you - I never - and I mean never - eat at fast food joints. Years ago, when I still did (although only once in a while) I always ended with a headache and upset stomach.

I have also recently severely constrained my sugar consumption, due to health reasons. And, yes, Beth I do also agree with you that sugar is "addictive", especially for someone - like me - that had been a life-long daily eater of chocolate candy bars.

Definitely not easy to give up.

I've been looking at the Atlas and thinking of my trip it can really get out of control
I'm not sure what I will end up doing and when...
the one thing I thought when reading about your conference talk Barbie was that the person you were talking with didn't listen... and one of the points was that they are diagnosing adults including women with ADHD my granddaughter was this past year or so as although not quite an adult she was I think 16 or 17 her dad was diagnosed as an adult,,, hope you figure it out just so that you know because it can affect a person as an adult even at 60 I've often wondered if some of the issues you mentioned as food poisoning was possibly allergies to some food...
planned on hitting the fish food truck suppose to be in town today so planned that for supper made a quite coleslaw and set the table hurried to get the fish and chips and no food truck!!! so annoyed ended up having popcorn shrimp that was in the freezer... it went with the coleslaw  then I couldn't find the tots that I thought I had guess not all mom ate was the popcorn shrimp... but she did eat them
just a normal day

My opinion of Chuy's Mexican Restaurant hasn't changed, I still don't like their food. The best thing I had was the chips and cheese dip. Their salsa was way too hot.

I saw on the weather we had bad weather coming so I mowed the lawn. Since we got a little rain the grass was growing. The storm got here about 9:00 with a lot of lightening. It was making so much noise that CC and I sat in the small bathroom for a while. We weren't under a tornado watch. It looks like it was worse to the East of here where my friends are camping. I wouldn't have wanted to be in the motorhome in that storm. Somehow I have mosquitoes in the house. I have killed 4 and there are still several flying around.

Barbie, ADHD wasn't even that common in the 1980's when my son was in grade school. He had so much trouble in school and I could have punched a few teachers. There was a conference on ADHD at the colosseum in Lafayette and I attended. I had to pay and it wasn't cheap. At one point they ask what parish everyone was from and I was the only one from my parish. Not one teacher. Considering some of the problems I had in school I probably had it too. I remember in the third grade I had a workbook on phonics because my spelling was so bad. I couldn't sound out words. I held my son back in kindergarten because the only letters he knew were X and O because he had to X the wrong answer and circle the correct answer. He wasn't even close to knowing how to read.

Beth, hard to think anyone needs a heater. It was 101 again today. I was hoping it would start cooling off.

I was 40 when diagnosed with ADHD! By a psychologist. I took Ritalin for a while but stopped as my strategies got better. I hardly notice my ADHD now that I have been OFF SUGAR for over 6 years. It's not easy but it can be done.

I also grew up being turned loose and not being hovered over constantly. I feel sorry for kids now, they have no freedom. Can you imagine only playing games while your parents yelled and screamed from the sidelines. I think the media hype has caused a lot of the changes. I agree it was just as dangerous back when we were small it just wasn't hyped up by the media.
Barbie sorry about your appointment. I don't know about how big a role sugar plays in it but I do know diet can cause a lot of health problems. I am doing hypnosis and reiki over Skype and it works well.I'm currently working with a woman who is having surgery on her vocal cords from a lifetime of smoking. Her sister quit years ago after one session with the man who taught the classes I attended. Breaking a habit isn't easy but the mind is incredibly strong. I may have added this photo before but I'll post it again. I took a series of videos of a woman being put in hypnosis by this instructor and then placed between two chairs. He didn't stand on her as he was too old to balance at that time but it was amazing to watch the process of him putting her into a 'frozen' state and then bringing her out. This is a bit of stage hypnosis and while he discouraged that he did use this example of the strength of ones mind. He was an ambulance driver in WW 11 and is still alive. He goes to Sunday School every Sunday!
My offer is extended to anyone else who might be interested and I don't charge :)

Martha, I was a terrible speller in school. I'm still a pretty poor speller, but I was finally able to ditch my dictionary when the internet came along.

Yeah, all of those cool temps those in the northern tier are having really sound nice. It has topped out at about 100 degrees, or near it (yesterday was "only" 98) every day here for the last several weeks.

Predictions have been for cooler, but somehow it still gets up around 100.

Hot weather is really a grind for me.
