Hurricane Wed

Let's start our day with a good morning here.

Hurricane Wed

Here's hoping all in the hurricane's path stay safe. Thoughts with you all. So far I'm seeing good reports from many friends. I hope that continues.

Lazy day here. Waiting on the mobile mechanic means doing nothing. Lol Just hoping they actually make it today.

Hi Beth and all!

Beth, I hope the mobile mechanic arrives today.

This is an update on the hurricane in our area:

We worked our butts off yesterday moving the potted plants into the music room. I put a tablecloth on the organ bench and a few of the smaller pots are there and the larger potted plants are on the floor. The storm itself never arrived here until 3:30. It's been raining off and on since then with gusty winds. The highest gust was 29 mph and so far we've had less than an inch of rain. We could have showers throughout the day. We also were in a tornado warning until 5 this morning. I think that was the worst part of the storm because it was dead calm and had lightening. Hopefully tomorrow we'll put the plants back out on the patio and pergola. Then I'll be able to get to the organ.

Thanks for all the good thoughts!

I saw the conversation yesterday about Sheila’s visit with her mom to where her family settled. I wasn’t sure she would see this post if I put it in yesterday’s discussion. I hope you see this Sheila and can comment for everyone.

I visited on May 22,2014. We went out to where her family’s homestead was. I took a few pictures but they’re only of the oldest structures built by her family. Maybe she can describe them. Unfortunately I didn’t take any photos of the homes that came after these. The last two photos are of the barn and I’ve seen it pictured quite a few times in articles in magazines.

Hi all,

Nan and I are safe after the storm. I posted a picture of my house that appears to have survived as well. Birdie is ok and so is her house and Nan’s I believe. I posted a picture in General talk under hurricane wed.

Lots of damage from downed trees and some of the mobile homes in my neighborhood are destroyed by downed trees. Roads are inaccessible in our village for the same reason.

Thank you for your prayers for our village residents. I hope to go back to start cleanup on Friday. May have to walk in.

Liz, I'm glad you and Nan left even though it appears your homes are safe, it's scary about the damage. Thank you for checking in with us.

And you, also Irmi, of course.

Sandi, I always love pictures from visits with Sheila and those sights. Thanks. It's fun to travel down memory lane.

The AC is fixed. And it wasn't until after they left that I figured out that he was cleaning out stuff from the roof of my casita that got in there! He couldn't figure out some of the particles. It came to me after they left, some of the shingles were almost dust and a little bigger. It clogged everything. So I'm glad I didn't suck it up and attempt it myself. lol. He was calling it bits of Styrofoam, but I realize now it was bits of shingles. The whole side of my RV was covered with that crap. Never thought about it traveling into the AC.

I'm here, not in great mood. My sleep study was a fail. I could not go to sleep because it required laying flat with no Cpap. My asthma does not allow me to be flat! Pillows don't work because they only elevate head, bending my severely arthritic neck. Gave up at 1:20 and came home. Their answer, get Dr to give you a sleeping pill! If breathing is the problem, a sleeping pill is not a great option! Then I'm about to fire cardiologist. My long time Dr and I have fine tuned my 3 RX to mostly keep BP pretty good. When I see him, he scrolls through my BP record and then we decide if any changes needed.
Cardiologist refuses to look at BP record, brushing my hand with phone aside. He each visit has tried to switch me to a new RX , both times I've thankfully learned before taking each are directly related to a RX I've has bad reaction to! When I ask why stop two drugs that are working, he says- because I don't like them, but ignores question why! Thankfully my Dr saw me after cardiologist monday and agreed No don't take either-?why would cardiologist put you on that when he knows you reacted to its almost identical related drug? I don't know, but I don't trust cardiologist. And,trust me, I'm making sure his office proactive manager knows as well as others!
Meanwhile I walked 50" for 1.66 miles on treadmill to calm down!

I'm in a conservation campground about 15 miles southeast of Sarnia, which is where I am going to cross back into the U.S. on Friday. I've spent most of today trying to straighten up my tree for my mother's father branch. I am OK through my great-grandparent as an adult, but I cannot figure out who his parents were. He married in Sarnia, but no records of that, so I cannot find his mother and father. I have a pretty strong belief that his father was Alexander and his mother may have been Janet, but it is amazing how many Alexander McArthurs married Janets in Scotland in about 1820!!!!! I've eliminated two because they stayed in Scotland past 1860, and my great-grandfather's first child was born in Sarnia in 185, so can't be those two!!

In the meantime, a pesky fly really, really likes my legs and has been evading my attempts to zap him with my electric flyswatter over the past 24 hours! He lands on my legs or arms, and then disappears somewhere. I have swatted at him a few times, but missed.

Anyway, I had a terrific peameal back bacon sandwich for lunch/breakfast today. I just love the stuff, but can't get the really good stuff anywhere but here in Ontario. I have three 1.3 pound packages frozen, plus the one I cut into today, but one package is for my son in Ohio, so I am going out to get a couple more tomorrow and freeze them. They are seal-packed so should be OK frozen for at least 2-4 months. I will be stuffing myself with it until it is gone or spoiled. Chatted with a seasonal camper her, and she says she has 12 packages in her freezer because it is on sale right now!!! (I paid about $4.80 U.S. for the 1.3 pound packages, so it costs about $3.50 a pound right now!)

When I was a child, my dad went over the bridge into Windsor, Ontario about once a month to get peameal back bacon for us. It isn't fatty like U.S. bacon, and it is not smoked. It is preserved in a salt brine that contains pickling spices and maple syrup, so you have to cook it. And it has almost no fat in it because it is from the loin part of the pig. It tastes like nothing else--salty, sweet, and spicy.

So glad to hear from so many who are safe in Florida! Sandi, great memories! I believe I visited there with Sheila in 2020. Beth, so glad they found the problem! When I would be in Kansas at cottonwood time, I would have to get on the roof periodically to clear the mess off my a/c. Velda, it can be hard to find good doctors, but I wouldn't be putting up with that cardiologist's ego!

My brother is eating and getting rest! So far, so good! Of all things, he asked for chili from Wendy's yesterday! Then he was ticked because 'they changed the recipe'. He wasn't having it that his taste buds are out of whack! So stubborn!

We had a good rain last night plus a bit of lightening. Haven't heard of any new fires. Only in the 70s today but windy.

I'm joining the hearing aid wearers. Sigh. I liked the audiologist although I think he likes to hear himself talk. My insurance has a hearing plan so aids have been ordered - will be a couple of weeks.

Beth so glad you got your AC fixed. Hope you have all your arms and legs LOL Judy I am fight ing a fly also....enough to drive you crazy, so far I have knocked over my water, lost my remote control in the recliner and whacked the dog by mistake with my towel. Sandi I remember when you posted those pictures, awesome background as well as so historic. Anita, I forget to put mine in unless I go somewhere LOL ya know where people talk and even then I can hear fine. I am still getting used to them I just forget about them. I agree with your brother, I too think they changed the recipe so maybe he isnt wrong, or we are both wrong. I am not giving it a second try either way. Good to hear news on our forum sisters. Not alot of damage I have heard except for Liz's place. They were so heavily treed tho so I am not surprised. Just hope no loss of lives.

Took Emma to the groomer this morning at 9. Stopped at the store for some salad fixings and the lights went out. And they did not come back on. So the checkers were announcing they could only take cash. No problem I had cash. So kind of dodged my way home with all the stop lights being out and people have trouble with the 4 way stop concept. At least here they do. So took the back way home and still no power. So since I just bought my generator I was feeling kind of puffed up LOL filled it with gas and oil, started her up for a few minutes to start the break in process. Turned it off, After it cooled started it up again for 15 minutes, turned it off. Let it start cooling off and BAM the power came back on. I know it works, and easy to use so I am good now. So I put it away just a bit ago, put the canvas cover on it, came in and BAM the power went out......again. LOL LOL I decided to just wait a bit before I started it up again. I should tell you I liked just pushing a button in my RV instead of pulling a cord (even tho it works well) but the one with the electric start weighed 99lbs this one is only 39lbs....no brainer. Power came back on after about 20 minutes so I bumped my AC down a bit just in case it goes off again...sheesh. I have never lived anywhere that the power goes off so often. But I feel better now that I have the generator, will feel even better if I never have to use it anymore this year LOL

I also enjoyed the tour by Sheila when I was there 6 years ago. I saw the barn and also the house. Such a beautiful setting with the mountains in the background!

Dave couldn't make it yesterday so he came by today to put in my microwave. The holes in the upper cabinet didn't line up with the ones on this microwave so he had to drill out new holes and do some other "McGyver" things to make it work. He said his friend who was supposed to put it in for me (but never showed up) would not have been able to do all that, so was a good thing Dave was able to do it for me. So it is done now and I tried it out to make sure it works. Cleaned up the kitchen afterward. Been working on other cleaning around here as well. Didn't get anything done yesterday  .

My friend, Cathy, in Crystal River was able to evacuate after getting her house secured. However, Crystal River got hit with a huge storm surge and is completely flooded and many people had to get rescued there. Cathy doesn't think her house survived. She is on a canal and has a one level house just feet from the canal. They had flood water in their house about 2 feet deep, from a hurricane many years ago and they are saying the flooding is way worse in that area now than it was back then. Cathy and her husband were just on a trip to Greece to celebrate his retirement, when they had to cut the trip short and fly back a few days ago. Not a good start to retirement! They have a lot of work ahead of them.

Donna, who was on here awhile back, also lived in Crystal River for quite a few years but just moved away to live closer to her family. I am sure she is glad she moved when she did. So glad to hear that the others on here are OK and homes are pretty much unscathed. Dawn, another previous member, lives in Weeki Wachee and she says she is OK there too.

One of my co-workers asked if I can work all day tomorrow because she can't work the later shift. I am scheduled 9-2. I told her I just can't do it with my sciatica issues for that long (9 hours!). I did agree to stay til 3, so hopefully they can get someone else to cover the hours after I leave.

Need to clip cat claws yet today. I am getting hungry so will find something for dinner soon.

Have a good night!
Barbie, Romeow, and Sophie, missing Lola! (and lots of ferrets running around in my heart!)

Velda, I would be finding myself a different cardiologist. You live in the land of plenty so I am sure you can find a good one that can relate to your problems.

It's hard to believe that the barn where Sheila lived is still standing. All our wooden barns except one have fallen down. That's a beautiful area.

Good to hear our Florida friends didn't have damage to their homes. Looks like they have a lot of tree damage to clean up.

A plumber finally showed up to work on my toilet. This has not been my month. He said the toilet has been leaking and has rotted the floor. Now I have to find someone to fix the floor. I told him that the valve to turn the water off to the toilet was defective and wouldn't turn the water completely off. He turned it and said the water was off. I checked later and the water is NOT OFF. Men always think they know better. Grrrrrr

Irmi, you need to get some wheels for your patio plants. I finally got a thing to move furniture for my Ficus tree that I have to put in and out in the spring and winter and for storms.

oh let me think Sandi if I recall correctly the top picture were taken from a wildlife over look so the pictures are of the Snake River off in the distance... Then my grandparents house is the pink house the story is that Grandma had to be somewhere no one is exactly sure why but she was gone for a bit while gone grandpa decided to paint the house he thought grandma's favorite color was pink hense the pink color she was so pleased with the thought that she never had it repainted.... it got repainted last spring or last fall not sure which I am pretty sure that when they removed something they found something that wasn't faded so is probably it's original color it "feels" right to me if that makes sense at all.. they also reroofed the house .... it will be exciting to see what else they do and how long it will take... the cabin I'm standing in front of is the cabin they built (grandparents built) for my parents they got married the end of August mom said they bout the Murphy homestead the next fall guess that cabin was just to close... oh by the way the term I've been trying to recall is public relations  it will be interesting to see where those pictures show up at as well of course the barn the other barn is older has a different pitch to it's roof and a slightly different view of the Teton's however we are prejudiced and just really think that "Ours" is the best one it is the only one to still have the chute and fence around the front of the barn I think that they plan on stabilizing the fence a bit though... I will have to go out and take a few pictures myself so you can see the house color now...
Had to go to the store out of milt and mom's RX was ready it's amazing what one can spend when one goes into the store to get said milk and RX
Judy that bacon should last quite awhile in the freezer one would think
glad that your A/C was fixed Beth
and so glad that most everyone was ok.... someone referred to Liz being hit but perhaps I need to go to general talk and see what she said I didn't see anything new so didn't look and hadn't seen anything on FB
It's funny what people will crave when not feeling well it's too bad that the chili didn't taste good to your brother Anita when I worked in the hospital in the heyday of AIDS we would have patients with it in their last days wanting watermelon and being denied because it might make them sick never made much sense to me...
I was going to mention the other day about something that I read on Yahoo was really neat there was a dog in a shelter that ran away he somehow got over several high fences across a busy street into a nursing home .... was removed taken back and he did it again and again after the third or fourth time they decided that he had found his home and they weren't fighting it again... now was the protector the care giver of all the residents in his house if true it was a heart warming story if not it was still a hear warming story
you all have a good night
