Friday May 19

Let's start our day with a good morning here.

Friday May 19

Postby Shirlv » Fri May 19, 2023 10:26 am

Morning All, 67° and sunny. Another day of “what can I get into”. One of my house plants is a Hoya which climbs. So searched how to make a moss pole. Texted son asking if he had a scrap piece of wire and described what it was. Within a hour he had made the wire tower and brought it to me. Guess he is bored too. Lol. I will go to Dollar Tree for moss and repot the Hoya. I was going to put this in gardening but then had nothing to post here. Will also empty trash, collect mail and stop at bank on my way. Have leftover pork and sauerkraut from yesterday for dinner. Be safe

Please share your plans for the day, might be something I can do tomorrow

Karen, I don’t have a deck.

Good morning! This getting up so early is strange - 6:30 today! Not that I don't have plenty to do! Happened to look up and see the back end of deer going behind the building this morning. Shouldn't have been looking at my phone!

Sue, sorry to hear about the health and death of your neighbors. Shirl, I doubt I can give you any activity suggestions! :) I'm going to have to rearrange boxes to make room for the movers! A little concerned that I can't get a response from the manager at the new place - thought she was better than that.

Kids stopped by last evening and my daughter looked totally exhausted! With nicer weather and school out in about a month, the kids are giving her fits with their behavior.

I wrote a long post the other day and then lost it! Gave up on it.

Been to 2 employment agencies and one interview at CostCo. The agencies say things are slow right now but still have some cannabis jobs coming. I will try that again but at least if there is a problem, the employment agency will help me deal with it (hopefully). I need to go up to Desert Hot Springs today to get another live scan done. The one I got in Cathedral City won't work for jobs up there (doesn't the city have the info somewhere that they can share??)

Yesterday I checked on a job as a product demonstrator at CostCo. You know the ones with the carts giving out samples of food, etc. Well, they don't allow you to sit other than for about 5 minutes per hour. Most of them don't have stools and there are no cushy floor mats for them to stand on. So that won't work. They also had so many hoops you have to jump thru just to get hired, get a food handlers permit (or some such thing), and if you need special accommodations, you have to fill out a form, get notified by someone, then go get it verified by I guess some clinic they refer you to. Too much for a part-time job!

Otherwise, it has been very warm, over 100* each day. Summer is coming!

Have a good day!
Barbie, Romeow, and Sophie, missing Lola! (and lots of ferrets running around in my heart!)

Good morning, Shirl, and all who follow. Activities for the day? If it doesn't get too hot, I will need to go out in my backyard and pick another 5 pounds of strawberries, then I will need to process for freezing the 5 pounds that I picked yesterday. Since my garden is 100% organic (mainly because I don't like to have any kind of poisons lying around, for fear my dog might accidently get into them) I lose about 10 - 15% of the berries to birds and critters. I am actually happy to share with the birds, and the snail/slug problem seems to be very much reduced when I don't water the garden after dark (as I did last year). If I water late afternoon, the surface water dries up before dark. It seems that dark combined with moisture really encourages snails/slugs.

I would like to say how very heartening it is to hear from many of you how your children visit you frequently, and how they respond when you need help - Shirl, the story about your son making the wire tower brought a big smile to my face.

How lucky you all are to have children like these.

Have a good day, everyone. Stay cool! It's getting to be that time of year.

Good morning, just a lazy morning sipping coffee and visiting with my friend who is here until Sunday. We are going for a short drive today and go to a store and see if they have any pots I would want. I still have some plants that need to be potted so hopefully something will work. Anyway we will get out of the house for a bit.

Shirl I agree with Anne you have an amazing family. Some of us are not that lucky but I do have amazing friends that are always willing to lend a helping hand.

Sun is shining and 80 then we drop down into the low 70's Might even be 68 next Tuesday WOW what a difference. However, this comes under the heading "so they say" OK off to play now for a while anyway

I’m home and resting . I forgot to use the inhaler before leaving home. Put one in my go bag so I don’t get in trouble. I know I am blessed with a caring family and that we live close together. I found a small bag if moss at a local nursery, bought 100 forever stamps at the post office Geezz. Will work on Hoya plant and send Edith a picture because I have nothing else to do.lol Anne, I have 3 tiny strawberries on the surviving plant from last year. Nothing on the three new ones. Karen, I missed spending time with friends so enjoy. Barbie, good luck with the search.

Loving your gardening and floral and fauna adventures. As a result of the pandemic my daughter started investing and cultivating her yard and what I refer to as her green jungle. I admire it but realistically know that I need to hold off. Maybe after I give up on having an RV and trying to take trips and downsize the real estate. Till then I will take up my spare money and time with dogs.

Just to share the short notes of things happening around here.

I am now officially one of those women who wear yoga pants and don't think twice at stopping at Krogers on the way back from the class at the Y because they are out anyway. And yes the yoga and the PT exercises and the cranial sacral therapy does seem to be making my core stronger and, therefore, my back less dreadful. For someone who has never consistently followed an exercise program unless you considered hiking with a dog, I am facing the truth that I may have to develop some new life habits if I want to continue being mobile.

Need to hear from Lyn and what she has or has not been up to. And Shirlv, you are both delightful and awesome. You also bring my thoughts back to remind me of my father who lived into his nineties but his world got smaller and smaller over the last 15 years..... In where he could go physically and what he could do. He was a mechanical engineer by training (with P&G) but over his lifetime he had many many interests and talents, many of them outdoors and physical. As his world got smaller, my brother and I watched him take up different "hobbies" that he could comfortably still pursue. He just adjusted to his changing world. I think it shows the intelligence and creativity of your mind that you find your way to new normals. Well and humor always helps.

Jane's puppy Rowan is now 5 months old and went off last month to live with Cindy and become her show dog. My name is still on her as breeder and co-owner so CIndy and I will share bragging rights. So far she appears to be a fine representative of an English Cocker.

Here in Ohio, we have weather, daily chores and errands. Exercises. Read national news. Read books. Groom dogs. Shop for groceries. Text back and forth with friends and received calls from both grown children for Mother's Day. I got around the birthday issue by removing my birthday completely from Facebook.

May everyone stay as busy as they want to be and as healthy as can be hoped for.

Tina, thank you so much for your kind words. When I read the word intelligence it made me smile. My 8th grade teacher told me I was too stupid to learn math. It had to be true because she was a teacher. I believed that until I was 40 and working in a hospital. A doctor ask me to write the dose for a child’s amoxicillin on the bottle. I said pharmacist do that and he said I want you to do. I was mortified because I was too. stupid. Did my best he said it’s wrong, do it again. I was so upset and after two more try’s I said I don’t know how. He showed me, I did it again, he said that’s right. I hated hum because he embarrassed stupid me. As I walked away he said Feels Good Doesn’t it. Damn straight I wasn’t too stupid to do math. Lol. Aaahh, memories.

Shirl, what a wonderful story. What a good thing that doctor did.

One more day and another work week down. Yay. There's a good chance I'll be walking Ty in rain tomorrow morning, then walking the 1/4 mile to work in the rain. I might look like a wet cat when I arrive lol. Then again, the weather predictions for this area are off more than right. So I'll not know till it's time. I will wear my rain jacket whether it's raining or not. Just in case.

Tina, my favorite clothes for anywhere if it's not hot out are a pair of leggings with one of my dresses. And the not hot out dresses are not fancy, just a couple comfy ones I found a couple years ago and bought in a couple colors. I'm so glad, as far as clothes go, I'm not living in an era where hair, makeup and how we dress was such a big deal.

Last night I posted a recipe for pickled beets, at least the way my mother and I always made them. So, maybe that will help with some boredom, Shirl. Really good with some hard-boiled eggs in the juice!

I got up at 5:30 am to try to get a reservation at Grayton Beach in Florida for two weeks starting April 19. Most of the state parks in the southern parts of the state have slowed down, and you can get a spot even for the past week or so, but the Panhandle is still booming, I assume because you can be sure it will not be in 90s there. Anyway, I waited until the three available sites were open, but missed them, and they all showed a little padlock to show someone else had beaten me to the sites. But i knew a lot of couples each get on a computer and get more than one site, and then release the extra one after they decide which they want. So I waited half an hour.

The new Florida reservation system is horrible, and it is just swamped, so even if i click on something, there are 30 people fighting me for it. And because system is so busy, it often boots me out just when i think I have a spot. :x :x :x :x :x Anyway, one of the locked spots became unlocked, and I clicked on it, but of course it spit me out of the system so I saw only the Google page. But I used the back arrow and got back to the same page instead of refreshing it, and low and behold, they were asking me for information for my reservation!!!!!!!! Of course, at first I could not believe it, but after staring at the screen for a while, I filled it in and got 13 days at a full hookup site. It is a handicap site, but I have a legitimate sticker, so I am fine. Still can hardly believe it after getting up early so many mornings for nothing. And most of you know I HATE getting up early!!

Left Salida and headed for Frisco and Dillon Lake to Heaton Bay, my COE campground on the bike trail and lake. Drive was OK until I hit Leadville. I wanted to walk around but it was raining and 45 degrees, so I decided maybe I could drive back there next week if the weather got better. Then had to go over Tennessee Pass, at about 11,000' and the rain got heavier and turned to a little snow and some sleet. Luckily it was a good road and not busy, so I slowed to 35-40 MPH. So it was a slow drive, but I made it safely. It is really cold here in Frisco but the sun came out briefly. This place is 9,200' in elevation and surrounded by beautiful snow-capped mountains. Before I set up camp, i picked up several prescriptions and my new camera that replaces the one I broke two weeks ago.

By the way, there is still snow on most of the high mountains and substantial snow that is being added because of the rain. Plus, every stream and river is overflowing and full of rapids, so the water is going somewhere. I did learn that the Arkansas River I have been following empties into the Mississippi, so none of this water is headed to the southwest. But I guess the Mississippi needs it since Kansas and Oklahoma and other states have not had the rain that western states have had.

Shirl, I don't think you want to do what I did today. I had to get up early and go to Lafayette to bring my son to the doctor. His girlfriend had his car because she was going to Baton Rouge to bring her mother for some procedure. She still hasn't fixed her car. While I'm sitting in the doctor's office for two hours my son gets a text that his girlfriend wasn't going to Baton Rouge because her mother cancelled her procedure. Grrrrrrr At least I got to eat Mexican food. Then I came home and mowed again. The grass is really growing fast. I probably need to mow in Maurice again too.

I would like to go to yoga classes but not enough to actually get up and go or pay $15 a class. I don't even know if the $15 classes started up again after covid. I did buy a yoga mat that was on sale the last time I was in TJ Maxx. I could probably find a class on You Tube.

My dad liked to garden and for a long time I had a garden in the corner of the yard. I would have the urge to dig the dirt in the spring but I have gotten over that. The weeds in the garden would get away from me about August every year and be a mess. That was when I was still working. My garden kept getting smaller and smaller until it was only 4' x 8' and Hurricane Rita took it out.

Sheila, I have tried the potato salad at several stores and haven't found one I like as much as the one I make.

Martha, you might like the Body Groove I do. I kept seeing their ad around beginning of this year or late last year. I used to enjoy dancing, at various times in my life, but fell out of the habit because Mel did not dance. Said it was against his religion. I asked, so what religion is that? He replied, which ever one is against dancing! I got one dance with him in 42 years at a military convention decades ago. Anyhow. I subscribed first of year to Body Groove. Misty Tripoli who owns it, is an amazing, caring person. There are over 600 videos on the app/site. They range from 3 min individual songs to 35 min groups of songs, often to a specific purpose, such as today, I did a 17 min Pilates series, then a 15 min boogie series. There are yoga sessions, HIIT (High intensity), rock n roll, Latin, boogie, etc. I really love the Therapeutic movement series. You do as little or as much as you want, when you want. There are meditations and motivation recordings. A lively Facebook group or you can just do your own thing. I choose something different each day, often the Workout of the day, which is a 30-35 min group of 6-7 songs to dance to under direction of a leader. Always there are 1-2 people in background showing modified moves either leaning /holding onto a chair or sitting on the sofa. as Misty says, there is no right or wrong way to do this! I'm not sure current deal, but I paid $49 for entire year. there is a zoom call live each week, but I have not tried for a seat in the limited group ( usually 100 allowed so Misty can give people attention. If they offer me a lifetime membership at end of year, I'll be taking it, because I have grown to love dancing in my room , no one to critique me, just flailing around having fun.
