So whats the big deal......

when people talk about "hits" they get on their website or you tube video. Do they
get money for each hit? I only ask because they were talking on the news about
this guy that had his guitar damaged on United airlines and he did a music video
on and they said it went from 6 hits to over a million overnight. So whats the
big deal with that? I'm totally clueless when it comes to stuff like that. I'm just
not internet savy, I can operate my own computer but the workings behind a
website or video thing, I just haven't got a clue.

I think it means the number of times that people look at the site.

I'm with you !!! I don't understand why anyone cares how many hits their blog or website gets. It must matter but I don't know how or why - heck I don't even know how to know how many hits my blog gets.

If someone makes money off their websites (like my stores, for example) or websites with advertising on them - the # of hits will be very, very important. Kind of like deciding what tv show to advertise on - the more hits on the website, the higher that website can get for advertising dollars. Or if they have things like Google ads - they will be clicked on more, therefore bringing them more money, also.

The # of hits also will bring the website further up in the eyes of search engines (google, yahoo, msn, etc) when they decide who to put #1, 2 etc for searches on terms your website uses.

Hope that helps.

thanks Beth, I think I understand it a little better now, it does mean more money but
not in the sense that its like a penny per hit, just more exposure and more exposure
means more money in the long run. Is that about right?

Think this guy got money because United Airline became so embarrassed by his video and the bad advertising it was giving them. They were losing more by his advertising than they were gaining by their own advertising. So my understanding was they paid him what they should have in the first place. So the more "hits" the more people saw what happen to him and the airlines. He talked about making two more videos and posting them.
