Tell me about your Wii's

Postby VickieP » Tue Jul 07, 2009 11:09 pm

I've searched the forum and see that some of you ladies have Wii and I was thinking about getting one. Since I stoped smoking Feb.9th I've gained back the 27 lbs. I lost last year, plus and extra 3. I don't seem to be eating differently, but guess I am. I think it has more to do with not smoking, my sister who always struggled to keep her weight UP to 100 gained like 40 lbs. I'd like to drop 100 lbs. I've always been bigger and she's my older sister!

So Ladies, tell me pros, cons, must have gadgets and don't waste your money on opinions.

Vicki,
I haven't done much on my WII since the weather turned nice. I'd rather get my exercise outdoors when I can.
I enjoy the WII Fit software as it totally has to do with exercising for good health. You have to buy the WII Fit Board to accompany it. It tracks your weight and BMI and as you get better at each game/exercise, it adds new stuff. I don't do the Yoga much. Probably because I don't have good balance needed for some of the poses, but you can use a chair if you need help with that.
Then I like the WII Sport program. That one has bowling, tennis, baseball, golf and boxing. You can play by yourself against the computer or whatever you want to call the console/software, or you can play against another real person. I enjoy the training games for bowling, tennis and golf on that program. Not into the boxing or baseball so much.
So that's my opinion! Hope it helped.
PS When I use my camera I can take out the card and put it into my WII and watch the pictures I took as a slide show on my TV. Pretty cool!

No, NOT on the weight gain - on the quitting smoking!!!!
Way to go!! You should feel so proud of yourself!

Here's a quick little article about how smoking truly does affect a person's metabolism:

http://www.metabolism.com/2008/08/23/smoking-affects-metabolism/

When I quit about maybe 9 years ago, I was under the care of a cardiologist - both he and my regular doctor said I could always lose the weight I gained (which I did), but I could never undo the damage I was doing to my heart. So, YOU STAY STRONG - YOU CAN ALWAYS LOSE THE WEIGHT!

Now, as far as the Wii, I've had mine (including Wii Fit) for about 2 months. Bought it with the well-intended idea of losing weight...hahahahahaha! The few times I've decided to take a break and use it, I drive around in as Bowser or Warluigi in Mario Kart, trying to improve my speed!!! So, my personal experience using Wii for weight loss is not a good one - but that's not the Wii's fault - it's MY fault! :) It's an expensive little toy...

Hopefully, others can relay more positive Wii Weight Loss Experiences! AND YOU KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!!!!

Congratulations, Vicki and a very good question!!

I also just purchased a Wii in the hopes of losing some of the weight that I gained after quitting smoking about 8 years ago. I haven't had time to hook it up as I have been preparing the house to bring my 90 year old mother back to live with me again but after I get her in and settled, I am looking forward to hooking up the Wii and exploring it's claim to help me lose weight!!

I know I have to be very pro-active with it to make it work but getting it out of the box will be my first big step. LOL

The problem with the Wii for weight loss is that you have to actually USE it every day! LOL Mine has been sitting in my living room idle for about 2 months now! I do like Wii sport and have become a tennis pro in my older years! LOL

We have the Wii and Dan uses it the most, he does ALL the Yoga, Strength, Aerobics etc for TWO HOURS every day!! He went from a size 40 shorts to a 32 and lost over 4 inches off his stomach. He looks better now than when I met him 18 yrs ago!!! He eats half the food he used to, has more energy and muscle. He went from 225# to 195#...loseing 30 lbs!!

I'm claiming the 5th on losing weight!! lol

Do Wiis have a dance program for weight loss/conditioning? When my ribs heal, I would LOVE to have the chance to dance to some good music each day to get back down to where I need to be weight-wise, and get back into some good shape. The music would be crucial for me, as just doing aerobics would turn me right off! I used to teach classes of aerobics to help fund my way through college in Boston. ACK!

I don't have a Wii, but I believe that unless you also change your eating habits forever along with the exercise your either won't loose the weight or you will gain the weight back if you no longer exercise.
There are so many additives in our food and especially if you eat out, it is criminal! Have you seen the book Eat This, Not That and also the posts on the MSN main page tell the worst fast food places. Chiles and South of the Border are in the lead the sodium and fat content is over the moon! One had over 6,000 milligrams of sodium in an appitizer!!
Check out this web site it will give you pause the next time you eat out or go to the grocery. It also gives healthier selections. http://eatthis.menshealth.com/

Good question, Soos. Since purchasing the software I have when I first got my WII I haven't checked for other exercise type programs. Perhaps you can search in Amazon.com and see what they offer to get an idea. Or perhaps WII has it's own website? I've never checked. ;)

I'm just now really starting to get into my Wii...so, here's at least one answer. I have not read any reviews on it, but will.

Vickie, how's the non-smoking going?

Yes, they do sell that here. I guess because this wasn't sold as an 'exercise/weight loss' program I forgot about it. I bought the mat for my GD last April. I wasn't impressed with this in that the plastic mat slipped around and/or got twisted allot (on a carpeted floor), and when my GD was in her stocking feet, that made traction slippery.

Soos, have you ever looked into the DVD of Richard Simmons "Dancing to the Oldies". Its an exercise program all to music.

Soos, hard to believe you need more exercise with all the work you do around your property. Don't have a Wii, so no report from me although my GKs have it and love all the games. Karen, I love dancing with the oldies but sort of do it on my own-just put on the music and go-you do need doorknobs to use as a partner, which is how I practiced growing up  Congrats to all who have quit smoking, lost weight, and whatever else you do in the future. Think I've covered all future responses which will save me posting    Jenny, does Dan do this in the Alfa or in the casita and how about on the road??? Do you think losing weight and getting fit thru osmosis would work? Much cheaper than a Wii. carold

Well i gained about 40 lbs after the car accident 4 years ago. I finally lost most of this year.
What I did was finally found a diet I could handle. I could not deal with keeping track of calories, portions, etc. So anything that had a point system did not work.
I needed something that said eat this Not this. What I found and what was recommended to me was South Beach.

Now the wii...we also have it and wii fit...I find it great for in the winter months. I have not used since returning from vacation. I need to get back into the morning routine...after all I was gone for 30 days..so the routine is gone...LOL. I am also way more active in the summer and being outside, so that may also be part of it. I do really like it. The only thing I would skip...is it can check you weight everyday...I only did that section once a week.
