Thursday and snow

Let's start our day with a good morning here.

Thursday and snow

Postby Othersharon » Thu Dec 22, 2022 9:48 am

Good morning all! This massive storm has just started here. Snow right now but later freezing rain, wind and super low temps. It’s not going to be very nice until Monday! So holiday weekend is pretty much a mess and I hope people are super careful out there. I thought yesterday I should get more ice/snow melt but while I was messing around in the garage I found several partial bags/containers so need to use those up before I get more. No idea how long they’ve been hiding out there! Yesterday was a lovely day so was able to get outside and I finally got Lola charged again and put the trickle charger on her so hope I can keep the battery charged! Sue, hope you are doing okay with the conditions you’re probably dealing with. Buddy seems to think this snow is fun. Not planning on telling him differently! I will have to see how he does with the high winds and super low temperatures this weekend. Lousy timing to have a new pup and house training! Tina, congrats on the new puppy. Not much else from here. A stay home day or probably days! I’ll watch it from my windows! Except when Buddy needs to go outside! At some point I’ll need to attempt to clear sidewalk and driveway. This time I’ll try to protect my neck and hope I fixed snowblower!! Plus learned my lesson as to just what it’s able to go through! So with that I wish you all a great day. Stay safe and warm!

Morning OSharon and all, dreary rainy day. Think the shore will be dealing with ice. I would prefer snow. Will watch weather and decide when to safely drive to #1 daughters. I complain about technology but would have been so lonely without it over the last couple years. Age prevents me from participating with family events like shopping, etc but love the pictures they send. Quick little text keep me involved. #3 granddaughter and husband have taken turns reading a story to their baby at bedtime since the day they brought him home. A picture of this 7 month old intently staring at a book as mom reads makes my heart happy. These are gifts you can’t buy. I have a couple loads of laundry, will pack an over night bag. Going to put the Christmas cactus in a sunny spot and prepare for a quick departure if necessary. Thinking of all members across the country. Be safe

Because of the winter storm that is scheduled to start tonight here in SW Ohio with snow, followed by a frigid temperature drop and a ferocious wind chill factor, Jane's vet was able to get the puppy girl in this morning to dock her tail and remove the front dew claws. They were scrambling to accommodate as many of their clients that could make it. Puppy gave a couple of squeaks and then went back to sleep snuggled up to a heated bean bag in her box to help keep her from getting a chill. Jane danced inside briefly to have her boobies prefessionally check. So far anyway baby girl has managed to keep the multiple faucets drained enough so that she has not gotten mastitis in any of them. Talented for a solo puppy. Lark is still loudly told off by Jane to not even think about coming near "her" puppy domain. It may take a while for Jane to share. Along with everyone else in the area, I made the required run to the local Krogers to pick up a few necessities and a few not necessities that came home with me in the sacks, too. We have a large fresh bag of dog food so the dogs will eat for a few weeks more and as long as Jane eats the baby's milk bar will hopefully stay open.

My daughter and son in law were scheduled to leave their home in Charlotte, NC, this morning and head to an island off the coast of Spain for a winter break. They headed off to Costa Rica last year. Haven't heard about any delays but as long as she makes it back to school after New Years, she is not concerned. She promised to send pictures. May everyone who posts or wanders through here, stay healthy, fed, warm and safe for the next few days and have a good holiday that fits what you want/need it to.....

Good morning...still. Wasnt too bad out this morning at 6am 38 cloudy, well since then we got some rain and the temps have dropped 34 here now. Forecast is possible freezing rain late this afternoon. I am going nowhere anyway. I did my store run earlier this week. I appear to be all set so far.
Threw a load of sweatshirts in because it is totally sweatshirt weather every day. I love this time of year tho just not freezing rain. I dress nice and warm even in the house but I see my electric bill will be the biggest I have ever had since I moved in here. It is projected between $106 - $110 still not too bad for a 1900 sq ft home. I do run my heat cool tho as I wear warm clothes inside, have a heated throw, as my legs get cold. I turn the heat up tho when my hands get cold when working on the computer.
Tina glad all is going well with the pup and Jane. Shirl hope you have no issues getting to your Christmas celebration. I will just be hunkering down here with the dog. Neighbors invited me over but I passed this time. It is more family time and I am not interested in intruding on that. I didnt mind Thanksgiving as it was just a meal. I like my own company anyway. Enjoy the peace and quiet LOL

It's in 40's here, chilly for us. No storms predicted in near future. Chris (son) and I did our last grocery run yesterday and don't plan to go anywhere until next week, except few blocks to pick up Chinese food Friday to last 2 nights. I'm about to get on treadmill, to keep up this weeks walks, which help keep my BP down. Then I'll wrap packages and take neighbor gifts around. Few things to prep for weekend, but our meal will be simple steak and salad for Christmas. Wishing all a safe and Merry Christmas.

Good morning!

Single digit and below here. Revised forecast with warnings came out yesterday afternoon for the cold temps today so I immediately walked over to the store! Snow starting at midnight - supposedly. Granddaughter and her fiancé had their Minnesota to Kansas flight cancelled last night. One of the passes is closed again for accidents.

Tina, glad things are going well with Jane and her offspring! Shirl, here's wishing you a grand time with family! I miss the family gatherings of days gone by. Fortunately, electricity is not as expensive here, but I just looked at current bill and it is about double with heaters running. Martha, glad you went to the doctor and Sheila, glad you are feeling better. I hope your mother has no more falls!

Have a few things on my list today - not excited about any of them! :)

Be safe and warm!

Good Afternoon. Waiting for Winter Storm Elliot to arrive. Starting to come into the western portions of the lower peninsula now and already into parts of western UP. O’Sharon, what you are getting is a low pressure system that we had earlier this week with snow and wind. That’s Storm number 1. Elliot probably will not get to you until maybe late Saturday or Sunday.

But it’s going to be a doozy. Now being called a bomb cyclone. It’s going to impact the entire state but in different degrees. My area and the southwest corner of the lowerpeninsula are under Blizzard Warnings starting at 7 p.m. tonight until 7 p.m. on Saturday night. Rather than try to explain all the details to this, here is some info from the NWS office

This is also the latest from our local TV news station regarding the storm, https://www.9and10news.com/weather/.

The parts of the state that are not covered under the blizzard warning are under winter storm warnings and the only reason is because they may not have as strong Winds as the blizzard areas are going to have. The NWS gave about a 15 minute briefing live on Facebook last night to update us on the storm. The winds will probably be holding pretty steady at 35-40 miles an hour gust wise, possibly high as 60. Power outages are possible and the first snow that falls tonight into tomorrow morning is supposed to be about 3 to 6 inches of very heavy wet snow. After that the temperatures are going to start dropping and that’s when things are gonna turn for the worse. That’s snow will be drier, so it will be blowing all over the place creating drifts and definitely blizzard conditions. They say that the roads will probably become impassible and travel should be avoided. In other words, stay off the roads to stay home. You notice on the graphs that they have not said anything about snow totals for Saturday. This is because the Lake effect is going to kick in and that is supposed to be quite substantial in itself. Either way we look at it we are looking at a potential of one to 2 feet of snow. But the Lake affect is going to go whichever way the winds decide it’s going. So some areas may get really dumped and others might not get much. We will cross that bridge tomorrow when thry have a better idea of what is going to happen. Somebody asked the weather service if this storm was going to be worse than the blizzard of 78 and they said they don’t know as of yet. Have to wait until I goes by. The differences between the two storms is that the Mercury for the blizzard of 78 was 28.22. The Mercury for this current storm as of yesterday was to 28.88 and it’s track is a bit more SE. but that can change.

Needless to say the stores have been extremely busy. When I was in yesterday, there were a lot of people there. But it’s not a panic type shopping, wiping out the bread and milk and clearing the shelves. I noticed that a lot of people seem to be looking for specific things. And that some aisles in the grocery section were actually more crowded than other areas of the store. I think a lot of it is people e are picking up last minute things that they were going to get later this week, maybe they were supposed to be going someplace for dinner and now they’re going to be staying home so they’re going and getting things to make themselves a nice Christmas dinner. There is a sense of urgency because of the timing of this. People who are leaving town, have been advised to get out of Dodge by 4 o’clock this afternoon if they can. For those who may be coming up here for the holiday, to get up here as quick as they can and not wait until tomorrow. Especially those who may be heading for the upper peninsula, the Mackinac Bridge May be closed in these conditions and they won’t be going anywhere.

It has been a long time since Michigan has seen a storm like this and basically there would not be a lot of hype, around it because we can deal with it. It’s just that compared to the rest of the country that has been hit and has yet to be hit by the storm, it’s hitting us on Christmas weekend right when everybody is getting ready to travel and get together with family and friends. So it is causing a lot of replanning, anxiety for those who are trying to go wherever and those expecting them.

So that’s the latest that’s going on around here at the moment. The storm is moving in slow but sure I’m just going to hunker down and take it as it comes. Sorry it’s so lengthy, but I know that some of you are interested in this, especially Anne, who likes to find out all the juicy stuff  i’m going to post a few pictures in general talk for those of you who might be interested onhow we handle snow storms here.

Anita, a day or two ago you mentioned something about living again with snow. That's been on my mind because I'm never sure where I'm going to end up and as I always thought winter was the most beautiful season, I miss snow. And at this age I wouldn't have to deal with like in years past. So sometimes I think where I'll end up. Your town is so winter gorgeous that I totally understand you being there.

I've worked hard today as it's our nicest day of the week after the sun came out mid morning and brought nice temps. So I've prepared for what's coming after the sun goes down. Dumped tanks, did laundry, changed bedding, etc. In a bit Ty and I will go for a long walk as I doubt that'll happen again before next week. Temps overnight go down and we'll be in a hard freeze until noon or later tomorrow. I'm glad I had groceries delivered today because there's a good chance no one would have been allowed to do deliveries tomorrow. So I'm all set with what I need to make for Christmas. Lows tonight and tomorrow in the 20's and highs only in the 30's tomorrow and Saturday. Improvement starts slowly Christmas and by mid week it'll have been a dream was we'll be back in the 70's and possibly hit 80 a couple days.

No word on my car. But as I said yesterday I'm kind of resigned to nothing until next year.

Sue, you snuck in. My weather is nothing compared to what you'll be having. My sister contacted me that they've got snow and cold in Wisconsin and it looks like they'll be cancelling their Christmas plans. Crazy every where. Linda doesn't (rarely anyway) come on here anymore, but she's been hit in Iowa and her daughter and family in Nebraska. Linda's had to cancel her trip to Nebraska for Christmas.

It is 66 here right now, sunny bright. Nice to hear little puppy is doing well, Tina. And, Jane too!
Today in the grocery store, two security guards were horsing around and one backed up right into my scooter. Luckily he caught his balance or he would have knocked me over. I was not happy about it at all.
Didn’t have one item I wanted, but no big deal to go to the other downtown grocery store. Hazel needs one more walk today anyway. It’s nice having the two big stories and one small store available to me.
I hope everyone in the path of this HUGE storm remains safe. It sounds like it will be a doozy.

Hi ladies!

My long post about the weather all over the country just went poof before I was able to copy it. So please stay inside and off the roads if possible. I think lots of highways and bi-ways will probably be closed. Even here in central FL, we're going to wake up in the high 50's tomorrow and plummet into the 30's tomorrow night with wind chills in the teens and 20's. Our main order of business will be to bring in our large potted plants with hopes to save them from the deep freeze. Ok, now I'll copy.

That’s true Irmi. the cold is penetrating way down south. This graph was just released by the national weather service a few minutes ago and it clearly shows where the cold air is going I talked to a customer representative yesterday in Texas from the company that I get my dogs heartworm meds from and she told me it was 44 down there..

Yeah! YEAH!! I LOVE the "juicy stuff", particularly when it is served with a big helping of real meat, as you have done here. I'm going to check out the URL in that weather report image for your area.

Yum, yum!

All kidding aside, this storm looks like a major whopper - not like anything I have ever experienced, or might ever care to experience either.

I hope that everyone is able to get off the road in time and stay safe. Once in a while out here we have people try to take the back roads through the Sierra when snow closes Interstate 80. :? They generally get stuck and snowbound somewhere in the boondocks out of cell phone range. Some have survived the experience. . . some haven't.

Weather like this is nothing to play around with. Take care everyone, especially those of you facing this onslaught.

Thanks, Sue!

It is kind of interesting here in Oregon as we have a warning related to possible freezing rain after 4pm. The cold spell is most prominent north of me. Eugene is 70 miles north of me and they have an "ice storm warning" with temps 30/28 Laura is 140 miles north of me and they have 26/21 with an "ice storm warning". so after tomorrow everything warms up......we will be 60 on Christmas day...crazy weather. The west side of the state will have a warm up with lows in the 40's and highs in the low 50's. So for us over here mostly a 1-2 day event.
I was supposed to go to my eye doc tomorrow at 8:30 but they called and changed it to 11:15 because of the weather and my doc lives in Eugene. Roseburg is a satellite office of their main one in Eugene. They also cover alot of the coast areas. AT least we wont be shoveling like so many of you and our cold wont last long.
Anne I know what you mean about people getting stuck. I lived in Colfax and they were always trying to cut thru there but they didnt plow that road until much much later so they ended up stuck.

Hi all,
Evening here in Oregon and it's cold. Not as cold as some of you, but very cold for us. Like Karen said, it was 21 when I got up this morning and it never got warmer than 25. I went into work because nothing weather-wise was happening but a couple of coworkers who live in Dallas, where I live, (Oregon, just west of Salem) sent me an instant message at 3:00 that it was starting to rain. Now that is bad because it is below freezing so now we have a glaze of ice all over everything. So, gathered up all my stuff, carefully drove home the 14 miles, and made it here before it got too bad. They were able to put de-icer on the roads yesterday but not in our park. It was very slick when I pulled in and gingerly made my way to my house. Got inside and hooked up my work computer and finished the day. i have the heat cranked up in the house just in case the power goes out. I have zero hope the house will stay warm, but it's worth a shot.

i do read the forum every day but it's usually first thing in the morning and i can't really put sentences together that early ha ha

Anyway, hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

I finally started to feel a little better about 11:00 last night. It's probable a good thing I had that doctor's appointment or I would probably have ended up at the hospital. I am still coughing a lot. One plus being sick on a holiday you don't have to worry about family showing up. You have to know some of my family to wish that.

It was nice today to have sun and temperatures in the 60's to finish getting ready for the freezes. Beth it looks like we will have about the same weather. The front started coming through about 5:00. Sugar is going to wish she had a litter box like the cats. She likes to hang out on the porch at night but she hurries up when it's cold.

I hope we are all safe and no one loses power.
