New Chapter in my Life

Postby retiredhappy » Wed Nov 23, 2022 12:47 pm

As many of you know, I had two strokes and a heart attack in January. I've recovered a lot BUT I'm also 81 and have been much weakened. I've having a fall (luckily I wasnt hurt more than a couple of bruises) I've made the decision to go into assisted living next month. I've decided I'm ready to have someone wait on me now more than I'm comfortable doing for myself and my poor daughter needs a break. She cares for their 37 acre ranch pretty much for her self since my SIL works fulltime. There is a wonderful place, Southern Winds Manor, in Pittsburg, only 9 miles from out house. The staff is wonderful, they will feed me, do my laundry, clean my room AND I CAN TAKE MY LITTLE CHIHUAHUA, DAPHNE. They are even letting me pick the color of the paint in my room since they're remodeling just now. I can take all my own furniture, the room is bigger than my RV was. My daughter will continue to take care of my other dogs until we can find fosters. It has a WONDERFUL huge shower, a small kitchen area and I can even take my own new frig with the icemaker. I'm only 3 doors down from the outside door so I can take Daphne outside. I'll have my computer to I will still be checking up on all of your. And if anyone is ever in the area come by and we'll go to lunch.

Wonderful news that you have found a New Haven for your next adventure. Good assisted living work to help you stay as independent as possible by providing all those littler supports throughout the day and night. And as you mentioned, for someone with a past of making and RV their home whatever space they give you will seem plenty big enough with your things and designee on it. We of course will be wanting pictures….. thanks for sharing your new adventure with us.

Congratulations on finding a good close place to stay. I like that it is still near your daughter and you can take your pup. Things sure do change as we age, not all bad but not all good either. I wish you the best of luck in your new digs

Karen, this sounds like a very good move especially with them accepting Daphne. I'm glad you've been able to find this place and check it out to your satisfaction. Hugs. You know if I make it that way, we'll have a lunch or two.

Karen -

The older we get, the more enticing these lifestyles become. Congratulations on finding a good fit and it will be so nice to have someone else do the chores and leave you free to join in activities, indulge in crafts, or whatever. After so many years of housework and cooking, we earned the right. And the weaknesses get harder as we get older. Wish I could do this! Great that they allow your fur baby, too.

You go girl!

Karen, sounds like you have made the perfect decision for you and your daughter. You will get the assistance you need and your daughter is close by. (( hugs))

P.s. I understand how difficult it is to make life changing decisions because they are in my future too.

Karen, Your plans sound wonderful! I’m happy for you. It is nice you found a place that is near your daughter. I remember how large the “ranch” is, and all the animals she takes care of. Being able to take one of your dogs with you is a nice bonus to going into assisted living.
Good hearing about how you are doing.

A big decision for you Karen, but sounds like a wonderful place. And Daphne can come too! The place my Mom was in also allowed pets. It makes such a difference. Mom wanted a kitchen but after about six months, i think the only thing she ever made was coffee and toast for breakfast. lol And you daughter is close enough for visits or to bring you to the ranch for a day or two.

This sounds like a good decision for you! Some people are afraid to go into assisted living (they imagine the old, dirty nursing homes from years back), but they find out that they are so much nicer now, allowing more privacy and independence, and have lots of activities, new friends, and less stress for everyone.

I am sure your daughter is appreciative that you made this decision on your own. It is really difficult when kids have to make that decision for their parents and send them there themselves. I have a friend who had to do that for her mom and her mom was so upset! But later, when she would call her mom about stopping by to visit, her mom would often tell her she was too busy with her new friends and activities for a visitor! Lol! She loved it there!
When I was looking for assisted living places for my mom, I toured one place and at the end of the tour, I asked the lady "where do I sign up for me?" That was where my mom ended up living later.

So happy they are allowing you to have Daphne with you for support and companionship!

If I am ever going thru Texas, I will stop for sure for a visit!
Barbie, Romeow, and Sophie, missing Lola! (and lots of ferrets running around in my heart!)
