Mitch, since you can copy and paste directions from your S & T software, perhaps I'll save my money and just have you post a snapshot of my route!! :o

Actually, I can just make a S&T file, including everything you want, and email it to you to put into your S&T program - done that for a friend of mine. It's really a very cool program. I first used DeLorme (LONG time ago) and didn't like it near as well. I also don't like the Trailer Life as well, nor the mapping program that you can get from Garmin (if you ask nicely!).

S&T, coupled with the right GPS, and you're good to go most anywhere!

I contact (online) the tourist dept. of the states I hope to visit and request their magazines and maps be sent to me. Then I research the state and plan out my trip on the map. Campgounds and rest areas are shown on the maps and the mileage between places and the exit numbers. I might also use Good Sams Trip planning.

Have S&M and garmin-S&M is much more detailed and can do more with it. Two of us traveling so one can always be on computer or would have to print directions if by myself. And, Lenora, getting lost can be fun. carold

It does look like everyone is in agreement about the software. I looked online and it's nearly $40 plus S&H and tax. Wonder if my Costco would have it? I rarely shop there. I spend more on the membership than what I spend in the store per year. And it's always a zoo inside and out!

Since I travel alone and couldn't use my puter while driving and setting it on the passenger seat wouldn't work well I LOVE my Garmin GPS. I started out with a cheap one and upgraded to one with the bigger screen. I particularly love that it tells me that I'm going to turn right or left up ahead so I know which lane I need to be in. I do wish Garmin would make one specifically for RVers with campgrounds but maybe someday they will.

Have you tried to download some camping POIs into your Garmin? (all Garmins do not have this capability...). Here's a link to a bunch of Camping/Campground POIs:

There's even a file for Tennessee Waterfalls POI, which I downloaded. Someday, hope to get to see at least some of them! :)

I just found the software (without GPS) for $30 - no tax, no shipping at Amazon...(don't know if that link will work! :?: )

PS: ON EDIT - Yup, link works fine! :)

Got my copy of Streets and Trips 2009 yesterday and will install it here soon! Can I install this program on more than one computer. Sometimes you have to register the software when you install it and then it won't let you install it on another computer. Anyone installed on more that one?

Every version I ever had could be installed on more than one computer. I don't know about the 2009 version.
You're going to enjoy the program. It's pretty cool.

I use TomTom (but NEVER rely on my GPS without using a good atlas - they DO make mistakes) - and I use Streets and Trips on my computer to plan trips and route (although, again, I often don't go the way I plan :) ) I don't believe in the expense of the fancier gps's other than what I have. Got rid of my first gps. I love them, tho, for traveling through cities and for when I don't go where I intended and now have to get out :)

Streets and Trips is my favorite program for routing. No, you don't need an internet connection for that phase of it. Just need it on your computer.

And, when you travel to places like Alaska, it's really important to be able to read maps and use your atlases, as sometimes the signal to GPS's gets lost - for hours at a time - and other times they simply don't recognize the roads for where they really are. I've seen this happen in other remote areas in the US - but not like in AK. My friends with a fancy Garmin got upset by it. Ha. It's part of the adventure.

Ok, got the software installed and am checking it out. Lots of bells and whistles, it seems. Wonder how much of it a person actually uses?
Anyway, Mitch, step me through how to draw the triangle around a place I want to avoid driving through?
Thanks!

Just another quick tip - let's say you want to go from Point A to Point B and you don't like the way S&T routed you. Just go somewhere on the road you DO want to use and >Right Click >Add As Stop. Use this method, or the "click on entire route, then click a point on the route and drag" method...both work good. You'll get the hang of it.

Lenora, I know you have TONS of stuff on your mind, but I thought you, and others, might be interested in this review for Microsoft Streets & Trips 2010 (supposedly available very recently). Anyway, Microsoft has added the ability to load a route to your GPS (in the form of a .gpx file, which is read by Garmins, and many other brands of GPS).

I'm so excited because I always plan a trip on S&T, but, of course, the laptop is difficult to use in the car, unless you have a rider that knows how. So now, we can have the best of both worlds...
