A New Era Bgins

Let's start our day with a good morning here.

A New Era Bgins

Postby Colliemom » Sat Sep 10, 2022 6:57 am

Good Morning. Sitting here watching the the Pagentry and Proclamations, declaring Prince Charles as the new King of Britain and Northern Ireland. For most of us, this is the first time that we have seen a King or Queen Proclaimed and later to be Crowned as a Monarch, as Queen Elizabeth II was crowned Queen when many of us were young children, so was not something we remember. I think it is the pump and circumstance behind all of it that makes it so fascinating to watch. It has gone on for centuries. And basically it is also ingrained in our History. From the Pilgrims, to Jamestown, the War for Independence and beyond, our roots trace back to Britain. This is living history. Many of us in this country have roots in our ancestry that trace back to Britain. It was sad hearing the news of the death of the Queen. I think for every one of us on this forum, she has been a part of our entire lives. I was four years old when she was crowned and Elizabeth was all that I ever heard about my entire life. Yesterday on the news, a reporter was interviewing a lady in London. She was an older lady and she was having a hard time keeping her emotions under control. But the one thing that struck me was, she said that “I will never sing God Save The Queen again” referring g to her age and the fact for many older Briton’s, there will never be a Queen in their Lifetime again. So it truly is the end of an era.

It’s a bit cloudy out this morning and 57°. We have been having some beautiful sunrises and sunsets due to the smoke from the California wildfires drifting all the way across the country.

Yesterday I volunteered with our local United Way for their Day of Caring, and went with 4 other people into the residential area of town, going door to door in the tornado area, passing out information to the residents who were tornado Survivors, from United Way, to let them know about the case managers and what they can do it for them if they need help for whatever they need. It was an interesting experience because we interacted with people whose homes were severely damaged to those who were a little suspicious, because I know that they are aware that sometimes these things can be scams. We were all wearing United Way T-shirts. But we also met some very nice people who were very thankful for the information and we were able to give them some information verbally as well and answer some of the questions. After we finished that up, we went back into the meeting area downtown for a luncheon that was put on by the Consumers Energy, who is the power company for our area of Michigan. There was a nice group of volunteers and everybody was ranging out doing different projects depending upon what they signed up for. I might do this again next year as it was kind of fun. It also has me seriously considering maybe joining RSVP. This is a picture of the group that was taken by the United Way photographer.

Today I will be attending a free luncheon and a party that is put on by Habitat for Humanity for The volunteers that have helped them get to the point that we are in the recovery process, and also for the community and those affected by the tornado. Looks like it’s going to be a great day for it. A lot has been accomplished in the past 3 1/2 months. There is a beehive of activity going on in the residential area with some homes being demolished and new homes going up or being repaired. Time is of essence now because winter will be approaching us in a couple of months.

Before I go out to the luncheon at noon, I think I am going to cut out some wood cut patterns for my Thanksgiving display that will be going out at the entrance n November. I want to take those along with me when I got up to the UP at work on them in the evenings or if we havrainy day or something. November sounds like a long way off , but when you’re doing things like that, they are time consuming am there are chores and things that I need to do to do in between.

But for right now I am going to sign off and wish all of you a wonderful day. Please stay safe in the area of the wildfires and also all the areas that are supposedly getting a mess of rain in California. And also those of you in other states that are affected by weather extremes right now.

Annie, I got your PM.

Morning Sue, you sure lead an active life. Good for you. Beach traffic continues but I will take my chances today. Porch friend suggested carry out from the local Italian restaurant. Brave soul is going to get in the major mess on the highway but I will just nudge my way on to the road outside my building to get to her house. Her sunporch overlooking the water will be a welcome treat. The homemade cannoli is a great incentive to brave traffic too. Lol

Sue, way to stay active. I know if I don't make an effort I would just sit here all the time.

One of the lumber companies has a portable sink in their ad which is what I want to clean fish. Don't know that I want to go to Lafayette on Saturday. I haven't been fishing in a long time. Most days it's almost dark by the time it cools off and then the mosquitoes come out. I might just try to mow some more of the yard since it hasn't rained in several days.

Shirl, have a good lunch. I didn't make it to one of the meetup meals last night. It was at a fancy and expensive restaurant in the downtown area. It's hard to find a parking spot and I don't like to be walking around there after dark. I didn't know if the plumbers would be finished in time for me to go.

Hope the tropical storm helped with the fires and didn't cause flooding.

Good morning gals!

It is a sad time with losing the Queen. Not totally unexpected tho, considering her age. I was thinking too of Princess Diana and when she passed.

My area got the most rain of the valley at 1.4 inches! Good, long, soaking rain! I have noticed a lot of trees turning brown out here from heat stress and lack of water. Hopefully, some of those will revive.

Very humid out and also inside the house. My little dehumidifier fills up almost daily. Temps thru Friday will stay below 100 which is good. Just hope the humidity goes down after this system is gone. A slight possibility of a few more showers today but it is mostly over.

The rains did help a lot with the fire in Hemet and they have it 40% contained now. There was an evacuation order that went out for one area 3 days ago and one family refused to leave. Well, they called 911 yesterday saying the fire was close and they were trapped and needed help! So some firefighters had to take precious time from fighting the fire, to risk their lives to go in and rescue them! What is wrong with people??? They have those orders for a reason! I think people who do that should be fined if they need to get rescued after refusing to evacuate.

I called about my Jeep and they said they think it is the fuel pump and are looking into that. That actually makes more sense to me. Hopefully, they will get it done today or I will have to get a ride to work tomorrow.

I didn't get much done yesterday so I have some catching up to do around here today. Need to turn on some upbeat music to get me going! That always helps!

Have a good day!
Barbie, Romeow, and Sophie, missing Lola! (and lots of ferrets running around in my heart!)

Actually I was 10 when Elizabeth II was crowned in 1953, and I do remember watching it on TV! It was very memorable but I think in black and white. This one coming up will be in color, of course. (Corrected date to 1953)

Yesterday was hot so I was not comfortable in the afternoon but going to be much cooler today.

Heat wave here today. 102. then we go down to the 70's gotta love fall. Not too sure what I am going to fix for lunch but I am feeling hungry. Drinking my pineapple juice they say it helps with the cough. I find that to be somewhat true. I am thinking egg salad sandwich!!!!! Protein. I have been eating better but not alot of protein so have an occasiona Ensure (yuck) I bought a couple of cobs of corn yesterday and they look real good so maybe for dinner.

Here if there is mandatory evacuation and you dont go your on your own They wont risk firefighters lives because you are stupid. I totally agree with them.

I remember the Queen's coronation, that was probably the only thing on the three TV channels we had.

Yesterday some woman in California ask on Facebook if the winds got bad would her trailer blow over if she decided to evacuate. You don't wait to see how bad it's going to get before you decide to leave.

I got a little more of the yard mowed but it clouded up so I quit. Now to find something to eat for lunch. Last night nothing looked good in either freezer so hope I can find something I will eat. They are talking about a cool front in about a week. Gumbo weather.

Barbie, I lived in the Sierra foothills for about 30 years, and was under mandatory evacuation orders more than once. Hot and dry summers were always a trial (the Sierra foothills are always hot and dry in the summer).

I fell into the habit of going out once or twice a day to scan the surrounding ridgetops for any sign of smoke, just as a matter of course.

If I should hear the distinctive high-pitched hum of a of a fire spotter plane, my heart would began to pound. If the deep-throated, all-encompassing rumble of a DC-10 (The DC-10 Air Tanker is a wide-body jet, which has been in service as an aerial firefighting unit since 2006) anywhere near, I got out the binoculars to try to spot where it was heading.

If a DC-10 flew over my house (as happened more than once) it was definitely time to make sure I knew where the car keys were, grab some clothes and bottled water, and get ready to load the dogs into the car. (Sometimes, if one waits for an "evacuation order", it can be too late).

Image
DC10 jet aircraft dropping fire retardant
(In this photo the plane looks quite small - in reality it is a huge, full-size, converted commercial passenger jet, 181 feet long, 57 feet tall, with a wingspan of 155 feet. What you see here is an extremely dangerous maneuver for a jet of this size)

So some firefighters had to take precious time from fighting the fire, to risk their lives to go in and rescue them! What is wrong with people???

Barbie, I think that people refuse to evacuate due to a total lack of imagination. People imagine that they can get the job done with their garden hose.

It is one thing to see 6-inch tall flames and 4-inch tall firefighters going at it on the tv set in one's living room, while one is comfortably seated on the couch, maybe sipping a "beverage".

It is quite another thing altogether to watch a hundred-foot-wall of flame rushing at you.

A garden hose will never, ever, cut it with wildfire. The soul of the flame will look at you and laugh.

Fire can move quickly and change direction in an instant. I know I only had a few minutes to get out of my house. When the police are in your living room saying "get out, get out now, fire is in the park" I got out!!!!!! It was 2 years on the 8th Seems longer tho.

Karen, you were very lucky to have had the police there, letting you know what was coming. With only seconds to spare.

Yours is an experience I hope never to have. I am quite sure I would not have handled it as well as you did.

I think dying in a fire has to be one of the worst ways to go. I wouldn't hesitate one bit to get out of the area ASAP if there was a fire anywhere near me!

The car starting sage continues...They said they don't know for sure if it is the fuel pump and the only way to know is to replace it. If that isn't it, the fuel pump can't be taken out returned like other parts can. He told me that I need to take it to a dealership to figure it out. So they are going to put the old starter back in and refund me the full amount. So apparently they really don't think the old starter was bad or they wouldn't put it back in. So now I will pick it up tomorrow and find another place to take it. I will take it to the Jeep repair place since all they do is repair Jeeps. Should have taken it there to begin with.

I am going to borrow my neighbor's car to go to work tomorrow and then have her drive me back to get my car after work.

I almost have all my gourd stuff organized. I have way too much stuff! Now that it is organized, I will go thru each of the bins and get rid of things I really don't need. I already did that with some things earlier. I also worked on the gourd doll. Got the suede cape made and just have to attach that. Then to work on her hair and feathers.

It is cooler out today but very humid yet. Hopefully, that will go away some this week.
