Rainy Sunday

Let's start our day with a good morning here.

Rainy Sunday

Postby Othersharon » Sun Aug 07, 2022 1:06 pm

We’ve had sun and rain most of today! Right now the sun is out again but not sure how long it’ll last! I finally got a call and estimate for having the outside of my house painted the other day….after trying to get ahold of the guy for a year! I decided to do the windows on the first and second floors myself to shave off some of the cost. I think they’ll get to it sometime the end of the month or first part of Sept. or whenever they finish a couple of job’s they’ve already committed to. Of course the weather plays a big part of all this. Almost makes me anxious for winter and having the outside projects done! Almost but not quite! Grange Fair isn’t going to happen for me after all this year. Once I find out which paint the guys want to use I need to start my painting project. I’ve decided to do a few windows at a time and not try to do them all at once. My body will probably thank me! Sometimes it’s all overwhelming but I must push on! If I don’t do it no one else will. Sorry, feeling sorry for myself here.
I’ve been checking out shelters for maybe adopting a dog and I’m finding some adoption fees to be anywhere from 400 to 600 dollars at some of them. I know they need to charge for neutering and shots and such but that seems a bit high to adopt from a shelter. Wondering if it’s some kind of scam or something. I did my search on PetFinder within 100 miles of my home.
Hope everyone has a good rest of Sunday and stay cool! This humidity is getting to me!

No more mice today, so I hope that means I had only one.

Love watching people leave on Sunday! There was a large family group over the weekend, but they seem to be all gone, so should be quieter for a while. I am leaving tomorrow morning anyway. Temps are in the lower 80s during the day here and 50s at night, but it will be very similar in my next high-altitude campground.

Sorted through some t-shirts and shorts this week. Tossed out some t-shirts that were really pilled or had shrunken lengthwise. I can easily tell which ones I never wear because they are at the bottom of the stack in my closet. Also have two pairs of shorts I am tossing. I keep trying them on, but they fit funny--big at legs and waist, but too narrow in the hips, even though I am still down 13 pounds from my UK trip. And really, I do not have big hips, so I don't know who could wear them. Anyway, am giving up on them and tossing them.

And I agree that those adoption fees seem awfully high.

Re: Rain

Postby Colliemom » Sun Aug 07, 2022 4:01 pm

Afternoon Sharon, Judy and all. It’s raining here too Sharon. We did have a break him up for a while but we have not seen the sun. It is very humid but it’s only 74°. Supposed to rain into tomorrow and I don’t think anybody is going to complain because we are desperate for rain and it is going to knock out that hot weather that we have had the last couple days. Yesterday we hit 90° and it was getting kind of humid by late in the day. But that is the last exam for the immediate future.Looks like a couple of 80° days later this week but in between we will be and I know I’ll hide what you’re in the mid 70s. I was kind of laughing today because the Gove or posted, and wished everybody an enjoyable rest of summer and hoped we were all enjoying it. There was something like 243 comments and just about everybody said this weather can leave anytime. I think we are ready for fall. Ha ha ha. She knows reach out once in a while and makes post to us just for the heck of it. Cause they’re always going to be those people who are going to make snide political comments, which seems to be the case on everything these days no matter what gets posted by whom.

We worked about three hours yesterday, at the mobile home park before we decided to call it quits, because it was getting too hot and stuffy. There were only about five of us there this time and a couple of them were working on a piece of property across the road from the mobile home that the rest of us were working inside of. This mobile home is in bad shape, but Habitat is planning to rehab it, as one of the young ladies who was working there yesterday is going to move into it after it is put back together. She has a little girl and there was also a boy too, I don’t know if it’s her son or one of the other peoples. She’s a single mom but determined to make a life for her family. But for right now it’s what she can afford because she wants to save money to eventually buy a house. The person who was originally living in that place was not a housekeeper by any means and it almost looks like she never cleaned the place the whole time she lived there. But then, You don’t know what kind of shape it was in when she moved in so it’s a case of you don’t want to criticize because you don’t know their story. But the entire place was full of trash. When the tornado hit, I’m sure that it also did not help matters any and probably blew everything inside all over everywhere. But the carpeting looks like it has never been cleaned. The kitchen sink and the stove were rusty and there was a burn area in the floor near one of the furnace vents where it looks like there may have been a fire. The place smells of musty carpeting and whatever. They had already cleaned out some of the stuff last Saturday into boxes boxes and bins. But going into the back bedroom and the batbroom, there was trash on the floor that was almost knee-deep. I wound up getting a rake and literally raked it out and one of the other ladies got a snow shovel and scooped that up into garbage bags. She was telling me that the other bedroom in the back had cat litter all over the floor and stuff stacked almost to the ceiling last Saturday. . Just pure junk. I was cleaning out the back bedroom, because we have to take everything out and we also are going through stuff as we want to be sure that there’s nothing in there that the owner might still want, even though she has already taken out her stuff. I came across a ton of Geanology stuff And old pictures that were an inch deep in dust. I made sure that that stuff was boxed up and put in the stuff for the owner in case she wants it. I pulled all kind of trash out from behind stuff, pop bottles, take out boxes, plastic bags your name it. you get the idea. But like I’m saying I’m sure that the tornado probably did not help matters any either because the wind probably swelled right through that thing being that the windows are broken out on both sides. It’s going to take a tremendous amount of work to get that home straightened out before that young gal can move in. One of the ladies who was working with me has worked for habitat for sometime and she said this kind of stuff is what you at and Say “I wanna go home”. At the same time you know that everybody lives differently, many of these
people are lucky they can afford to even be there. I’m sure that they probably would much rather be in a better situation. So all you can do is go in and do what is needed and help the next person who wants to live there. That’s not to say that every home that’s left, and there not very many of them, are in that kind of shape. Just the individual. We will persevere and we will get that home in good order and make that young lady happy. There are others that also have to be done And they just now put out another request for volunteers for next week Saturday. I am thinking on that one because Gaylord is celebrating their Centennial next week Saturday and I have thought about maybe going to the parade plus sidewalk sales etc. but I will think about it. At the same time I also know that we are going to be getting pressured by the seasons changing too fall and then eventually toward winter, and we have to get these people into long-term housing.

But right now I had better get myself into the kitchen and get my supper started and I also get the dogs turkey cooked up so I can get their supper going. So I’m gonna wish you all a nice afternoon and evening depending on where you are.

6% chance of rain- ill believe that if my head gets wet when I walk over for mail, but call me doubtful!
Barbara, how did that big storm go? Did you get wet?

Velda, I agree with you! I see more rain coming across the valley now but I won't hold my breath on that getting here. And nope, nothing, nada on the storm the other day! Just missed me here and turned south.

It is really humid here again today! It was warm all day at work too. I wore my neck fan all day.

Judy, please don't use those glue traps! They are SO cruel and inhumane!! The mice will literally chew their feet off trying to escape! :o Those things shouldn't even be legal.

Am heading over to do a haircut soon on a lady in the park here.

Have a good night!

I didn't do much today. I managed to get a little mowing done before it decided to rain. It got up to 99 but the rain cooled it off some.

I had a Thanksgiving like meal for lunch. I baked some chicken, black-eyed peas out of the freezer, sweet potatoes and stove top stuffing. More stuff out of the freezer. I keep taking stuff out of the freezer but it doesn't go down very fast.

I went through another bin of clothes in the old house. There were a couple of nice dresses but I don't see me wearing a dress again. Most of the clothes were two sizes too big. I hope I don't get that big again. I will save a few shirts for my sister to look at and the rest are being donated.

Sharon, I think some of the rescues are more about making money. I am not looking to get another dog but look at the local parish rabies control center Facebook page often. They won't adopt dogs out but work with a local rescue that will handle the adoptions. I think their fees are around $150 which is about what you would pay at the local spay and neuter clinic. The same service at a vet would be at least twice that much. What ticks me off is that all the cute, little dogs get tagged right away by the high price rescues. That leaves the animal control full of pit bulls, lab mixes and hound mixes. I have looked at some of the rescues in the Baton Rouge area and their fees are in the $600 range.

Sharon, have you checked with the local County Humane Societies? They usually have much lower costs on their animals. I only paid $35 for Romeow (all pets were half price for a few weeks). The rescue/shelters usually have a higher overhead and have to pay more for spay and neuter services, plus they charge more to make sure people who adopt their animals are very serious and can afford to take good care of them. I know there are a lot of good people who are capable of offering great homes that can't afford those high adoption fees tho. (I am one of those). The County Humane Societies usually have their own in-house vets so that saves them some money and just want to rehome the animals they have, so they can bring in more to rehome.

I'll get some more kill or capture traps tomorrow and get rid of the sticky ones. I am driving past Montrose, and there is a Walmart and a couple of big hardware stores there. I need to get several more traps, obviously. I wonder if they are coming in from the outside through a crack in the slide??? It fits pretty good, and I looked for a crack, but I know it does not take much for a mouse to get in. Both mice came from the area next to my couch, just behind my driver's seat, right next to the corner of my slide on that side.

And I just heard the noise of someone moving my second trap that I put in the same place as the one that caught the mouse last night. It was obviously something moving it around. So I got a flashlight, but the trap had not been set. Picked it up and shook it, but no mouse inside. Then just now, I saw the mouse run across the room and past the trap. Hopefully, it will be tempted by the peanut butter I put in it!

So, will be checking it a couple of times tonight. I am amazed that the mice have the courage to just run past me!! There is no food on the kitchen counter or on my shelf unit next to my chair.

I am not afraid of mice, but either the computer cord brushed my foot just now or a mouse ran over it!!!!! Yikes. I don't like to be startled!!!

my husband hated mice and he went through and filled in any place that he could spray insulation (the kind in a can) where possibly a mouse could enter in never saw them but it's been stored for over a year so do have concerns ... hopefully you will get them all soon Judy
Sue it's got to be hard to go in and do that kind of stuff ... hopefully she will want the photo's and I am sure that once all the garbage is out that the new people will be able to clean it up and have a lovely home...
With Habatate behind them they should come out on top..
Those prices do sound out of the world... hopefully you can find one that you can afford and want...
it was a normal Sunday
no rain none expected for awhile but we did enjoy what we got for a couple of days...
you all have a great day

Just got second mouse. Hope this is all. I really hate to kill any animal so this has been a very stressful night. Going to get my shower and go to bed.

I would hate to watch a cat catch a mouse. Even worse, to have a cat bring me a gift of mouse parts!!!

Judy,

It seems like mice follow each other's trails. Once one has gotten in there are more following. I'm sorry, it's not easy to kill any living thing, but I just wanted to add that I had 2 cats and some dumb mouse STILL came in! Good luck!

Hope you find your sofa cover. A large, pretty throw in the meantime? I believe some of the manufacturers of even high end rigs cut corners on quality. We had a Winnebago that was well over 10 years old and the velour sofa was still in great shape. Then we bought a higher end "A" that looked so luxurious but all the hidden stuff was shoddy: drawers with wimpy support, faucets that broke within first week, etc. That first month of owning that rig it spent more time at the dealers fixing things than it did in our yard. There is a large company that sells replacement furniture and I'm sure you have checked them out. Too bad there isn't a camping show nearby where you can browse and ask questions, because I'm sure there are RV upholstery companies out there.

Sheila's right - you can find just about any type of vendor at Q in January.

Judy
don't know the name of the company but as I recall somewhere in the area of Phoenix is a business that has taken out of rv's salvageable things... have seen a brochure or something at the big tent... I've been going to call and see if I can get a microwave and keep forgetting after all it's a good bread basket.....
