Where to buy furniture cover for RV small couch?

Postby JudyJB » Sat Aug 06, 2022 5:43 pm

Does anyone know of a good place to buy one of those covers that are stretchy and tuck in for my couch in my motorhome? I looked on Amazon, but the ones they have look really thin, and I would like to handle the choices and pick out something in person. I'd like something thicker, but still washable. One I saw on Amazon cost only $19 and another cost $29, but they looked really thin.

I have tried several places to get my disintegrating couch recovered, but have not had much luck. Thought this might help in the meantime.

Target?? A furniture store?? Suggestions.

I've usually been purchasing mine on Zulily. They are most often the lowest price. But I've also purchased on Amazon.

Judy, if you were here in CA, I know exactly the person I'd recommend! She did my chairs for dining room. If you get to CA and want to talk to her, let me know ! It's so awful the amount of $$ you pay for RVs yet it seems every manufacturer uses crappy material for upholstery! I see frequent requests like yours in all the Rv groups I'm in, including those for $250,000 Leisure Travel Vans!

I can't buy a new couch, Shirl, because this one was specially built for this space. It is on a slide, but the front part overhangs the slide, while the back is cut out for the furnace duct. On the sides, it is also a funny shape--both sides are cut to fit partially on the slide and partially off. And the one side has a furnace duct sticking out.

I got one price in Florida to have it recovered, and that was $2,800, which is ridiculous!! I even looked for someone who could take a new couch and cut it up to fit the space, but no luck. Will continue to look when I get to CA and OR.

Judy, when you mentioned upholstering I knew it was expensive so mentioned buying. I now understand the situation. I searched covers and only my opinion but wouldn’t think stretchy :D material would be thick. I have no experience with stretch covers but would think when you sit on the covered couch the material would stretch then too. Does it bounce back or get baggy in time. I would go with duck material, isn’t stretchy but would hold up and think look nice. You would have to measure carefully and deal with a easy return company. Nothing is easy now days. Also you are going to have to stay in one spot longer enough to receive and return packages. :D

Good tips on fabric. I'll be at my CA son's house for only a few days over the Labor Day weekend, but I have already been ordering packages from Amazon to be delivered there. I'll be back there for the Christmas and New Year's Holidays, as well.

Might order something and then return it if it does not fit.

One more long-term solution I thought of would be to get someone to take out the jacknife mechanism and permanently fasten the lower part that hides the front so that it does not lift up anymore. I never use it as a bed since it is too small for any of my grandkids anymore.

If you remove jackknife mechanism would there be a frame left that a futon sofa could sit on/attach to. Or maybe a wood box structure that attaches to hardware on floor and would hold a futon. Lol can picture in my minds eye and not a clue what is feasible. Anyhow, good luck

Here is the sofa from the front. It is a jackknife, but I really never use it that way anymore. I just want a plain sofa that will fit the slide:

Here are some photos of the two sides. Notice how the sofa was made to hang over the front of the slide. I was told that if I tried cutting down a regular sofa, it would be too high because it has to fit on the slide:

And this is some of the stuff underneath it, though I think I could shove the furnace ductwork to the back. You can see why I need something on the lower front to hide this stuff.

The back of the sofa is only about 10" from the top down, and the rest of the back is open.

I was picturing some ratty ugly couch. I think that couch looks pretty good. Does it have tears or holes. I’ve seen commercial that restore leather. Don’t know your material but could it be restored. Maybe search “how to restore whatever”. Wouldn’t that be cool? Sorry Judy, can you tell I’m bored and have taken over your couch.

The vinyl has disintegrated and falling off in little chibbles. The top half of the back is just fabric now, and the bottom cushions are crackled and also missing a lot of vinyl. This means that I have to vacuum up vinyl pieces all the time and if anyone sits on it, their clothing picks up pieces, sort of like sitting on something a very furry cat has sat on!!

It is due to very cheap vinyl fabric being exposed to sunlight. Here are two photos showing how the vinyl is cracked and peeling, and in the worst spots, there is only the underlying fabric showing. The only solution is to replace the sofa or try to get it recovered. I would be happy doing either, but the quote of $2,800 was way over my budget, to say the least. When it started to happen a couple of years ago, I tried putting clear nail polish on a few spots, but it came apart anyway. It is way past restoring, and is definitely a ratty old couch!

Judy, I've seen rigs that removed only the top portion and kept the base. Then put a piece of plywood over it that could still be lifted to get into the area below. They made their own cushions for seat and back and even have made a couple different cushion covers to change out occasionally. It's a possibility.

I use cheap washable covers because I've always had dogs. That said, they worked well for me.

Beth’s suggestion sounds like a good option. Having someone sew covers for cushions would be less expensive than upholstering a couch. Found a YouTube video of a woman recovering her couch. Not suggesting you do this but I found it interesting and thought you might too.

Just thinking...
could you put in a couch and remove the legs on the back and use the legs (or new ones the right length) to use on the front, off the slide?
Or find a futon-type couch that is narrow enough to completely fit on the slide front to back?
Or maybe two small comfy chairs and a table in between, that would all fit on the slide without hanging over?
Barbie, Romeow, and Sophie, missing Lola! (and lots of ferrets running around in my heart!)
