Warming up Tuesday

Let's start our day with a good morning here.

Warming up Tuesday

Postby Colliemom » Tue Jun 14, 2022 5:51 am

Good Morning. 54° and the sun is coming up. We are heading into three days of above normal temperatures with humidity. 80’s and 90’s with heat indices near 100 in some areas. But back to normal 70’s by Friday. Yuck. I think the worst is supposed to be more toward the central part of the state than up here. Our high today is predicted to be around mid 80s.

Another tragedy has struck in the area. Two 2 year old’s drowned in a pond near one of our local lakes yesterday. Both were from the area. . They had been missing for40 minutes before they we’re found. So sad.

Big doings here in town today. All day long Tornado relief concert going on, with many different bands performing. Some businesses are also donating a percentage of proceeds to the fund also. Concert is free. There will be food too. There was a USO style one this past Saturday as well. I’m sure there will be much green raised today. And it’s a good break for the people to have some fun too.

So sad about Yellowstone. Have seen videos of washed out roads and bridges. Will be a long time before north Yellowstone will be reopened again. Couple of local people, he is a developer here and a very close friend of my neighbors, has a ranch on the Yellowstone River north of the park. They left here Sunday to go out there, not knowing the flooding was going to happen. Last report my neighbor got was the water is almost up to the house. Neighbors and about 3 other couples go out there in September every year for a week or two. Been doing it for years.

Catherine, hard to believe you have been in CA this long already. Tine has flown by.

Pest control coming to spray for mosquitos today, so need to get my shower and get dressed before he comes. Then am taking a run up town to check on the couple who’s yard is getting stumps taken out of, to find out what’s going on. Know somebody who is going to try to rake the yard down level afterwards, think he has a tractor and I want to go help when that happens. I known this couple a ling time as he had a photography business in town and I took photography lessons from him. Also sponsored his wife into my church.

Got tbe grass mowed at the sub entrance and my yard yesterday. Mowed around some clumps of wildflowers coming up. Decided to let them do their thing and when thry die, will mow them. I know I have mentioned Maintaining but the pathway and entrance on here, thought I would share a picture of the pathway. Yeah it is a pretty little short walk especially in the fall.

Goi g to finish. Reakfast and get moving here. Have a nice day all.

Sue, I watched several videos on the Yellowstone situation last night. The damage to the roads is absolutely jaw-dropping. I can't see those roads being passable - let alone repaired and re-opened - this year at all. In many places, it looks like the road is simply gone - totally washed away.

Repairs might not be completed for several years, because the interior of Yellowstone is snow-bound in the winter (the roads are pretty much closed from November to May, depending on the snow situation), so I doubt any road repair can be completed anytime soon.

I am so very, very grateful and thankful that I had my Yellowstone adventure in 2018. Had I waited, between Covid and now this, I might never have gone.

Good morning gals...

Feeling like a truck hit me this morning. Achy all over, congested and a bad headache with a 100* temp. Just took some cold/flu meds. Will be going back to bed soon.
I will take another Covid test tomorrow. I wore my mask all day yesterday and also used anti-bacterial wipes in between customers and before handling anything in the shop. Not going anywhere today or probably the rest of the week.

When I went to Yellowstone, I only had time to see the south end of the park (since my Jeep was in the shop 4 out of the 5 days I was there  ). Hopefully, by the time I am able to head back up that way, the north end will all be repaired and opened again. My friends Debbie and Dave are headed there this week. They may have to change their plans a bit.

Was very windy last night but not bad this morning. I heard something hit the side of the house that made both me and Lola jump! Probably a palm frond.

Sue, so sorry to hear about the little kids! So sad!

OK, back to bed...
Barbie, Romeow, and Sophie, missing Lola! (and lots of ferrets running around in my heart!)

Morning Sue and All, it’s really dark here, heavy wind and storm warning for another hour. It’s ok because I have my Anker battery charger ready. Lol Granddaughter recommended the Anker brand and Sue’s friend also. Surprising that this small item makes me feel more secure. Clearing later but not planing to go out. Will find something productive to do, or maybe not. :D Be safe

Good morning ladies!

Sue, that is so sad about the two young kids but happy to hear so much is going on following the tornado. It warms my heart to read these things.

Anne, I too, am glad we went to Yellowstone a few years ago. My sister & her hubby were there only a few days ago and she said it was raining when they were there.

Shirl, I hope the storm misses you.

Barbie, I hope you're feeling better soon.

It's nice to see so many of you posting lately. We're going to get into the mid 90's today and the rest of this week. I'd rather have these temperatures than be chilly, although with the temps some of you are experiencing above 100 are a bit much. I made a seafood boil, aka a southern low country boil, for dinner yesterday and it was so good. That will be a regular selection on our dinner menu.

Good morning all. Woke up to heavy rain this morning but it has slowed down now. Sure glad I got the backyard mowed yesterday! I debated on doing it but finally went out about 6 after it cooled down out back and got it done. By that time of day the back is shaded so it works out to be a good time to do it when it’s so warm. Today is the last day for my rental car so trying to get a couple off appointments taken care of and need to get to the grocery store to get some everyday items stocked up. I can drive Lola if I need to but hope not to have to. I checked with the Subaru dealer the other day and apparently the car I have on order is made and about ready to be shipped so hoping I have it sooner then later! But the fact it has a VIN is apparently a good sign. I also saw some of the videos on the situation in Yellowstone. Sure looks like it’ll be awhile before that area can open up again. Sue, your fence peepers are so cute! Look forward to seeing your finished project! Judy, I’m enjoying traveling with you! Not much happening here just trying to keep up with every day tasks. I’m not complaining…I can use some normal for awhile! Hope everyone has a good day. Those of you dealing with the extreme heat, stay cool!

Irmi, a Low Country Boil sounds like something my family would like. I’m all for cooking everything in one pot. Thanks

Sue, I would like to walk that trail.

Kind of damp and cloudy out this morning but so far no rain drops. My friend working in Yellowstone said the employees cant leave right now until everything is safe and secure. The gift shop she works in (as of 3 days ago) closed yesterday at noon and will be closed for the next couple of days. She is in south Yellowstone and says all is well there. She is fine. whew

Sorry you arent feeling well Barbie, hope you recover quickly. Sharon I know buying a new car right now is tough. I just hope mine holds out as they are starting to sell some of them without chips.....now how does that work?? Sue love where you are able to go for a walk with the dogs. Looks like a picture.

Well motivation is very slow this morning but think it is time to get breakfast and throw some laundry in as it is time for me to head to Medford eye docs again. Will go tomorrow eye appts on Thurs and Fri morning and can head home after my Friday morning shot. When I get back I need to set up my watering system but it has been raining off and on so no real hurry.

Good Morning All, Sue, what a pretty picture. That’s a horrible shame about the 2 year old kids. The Red Cross did a study here about kids drowning. Two years old seems to be the most dangerous age.
A 90 year old man was crossing the street on his scooter. He was hit and killed by an 80 year woman driving a car!!! Boy, do I watch out for those old people when I am out and about on my scooter!!!
Very sad situation in Yellowstone…I have seen bits and pieces. Heard the entire park is closed. Glad your friend is safe, Karen.
Going to library today…two books ready to pick up. Stopping at store for milk also.

Good morning. It's 74° on our way to about 90° today but humidity at 39%, and which will drop through day, I guess feels less hot than your 90 with high humidity! Summer in northern California !
Very sad about those 2 little ones. At that age , really hard to keep track of.
I agree it will be challenging with some roads in Yellowstone, with having been built between mountain and river and where land is gone, washed away! I watched a update video on the house I had seen earlier in the day with its deck hanging over the river, as the river took out the house, floating it almost intact down the fast moving river! That would be hard to take, because now the land to rebuild on is gone!
Barbara, why don't you go to a Doc in a Box type clinic tomorrow which does CoVid testing? You can find one online near you and use their app to make an appointment easily. Insurance usually covers and you get tested, they listen to lungs and look at ears and throat and if you test positive, they can give you RX including antivirals if appropriate . It was way quicker for me than my Dr who wanted nothing to do with anyone who might have CoVid! If they have a branch of Carbon Health there, they were so very nice and efficient.
My HS helper backed out, so I'm going to continue on and figure out how I can do lower cupboards, even if it takes 2 days amd crawling on floor.
Have a good day everyone.

It warmed up about two degrees today, but wind was a little less, but still felt cold all day. I am leaving here for the town at the northern tip of Scotland where I take the ferry to Orkney. The town is very small and called Thurso, but it is supposed to be up to 63 there tomorrow. Stromness in Orkney will be in low 60s next day, but still very high chance of rain. Good news is that I bought a sweatshirt today. I really wanted one that zippered up because it can be hard for me to take stuff off, but this one is large enough and 50/50 cotton and poly, so it won't shrink. I like it because it has the face of a Highland cow on it. These are the ancient cows bred in Scotland to withstand the cold that have a lot of long hair, even over their faces.

Now about food. For years, I have had a bad habit that is not good for me--instead of waking up and eating a good breakfast or stopping somewhere to eat right away, I tell myself there will be something better just down the road, so I'll wait until then. My B&B used to serve a full breakfast, but now all they do is leave out boxes of cold cereal, milk, and OJ, plus turn on the coffee pot for self-service. I don't like cold cereal, so I have been going out for the day and procrastinating on finding something to eat until after noon. I found a fantastic bakery in the center of the nearby town, so yesterday I bought a sandwich on wonderful bread, but when I started to eat, I felt my old IBS symptoms, so I had to stop and did not finish the sandwich until after 2 pm. This is not the fault of the UK--it is what I do all the time in the U.S., and I really need to eat more regularly. I also need to take my meds earlier in the morning so they work better by late morning, etc. Did better today, and tonight I have a sandwich I got this morning at the bakery and that is going to be a good dinner.

Also, as my signature points out, I strongly believe that one of the important benefits of travel is to learnt that how we do things in the U.S. or even in our part of the U.S. is not the only way of doing things. I think it is really important to try to do things another way when you travel in order to really learn what other cultures are like.

HOWEVER, like everyone else, I am a creature of habit. This is a hugely tea and coffee drinking culture here. "Hot drinks" are available everywhere, but I am used to drinking pop or iced tea or even water with ice in it all day, and I am going nuts trying to adapt. (I have never liked coffee, and only very occasionally drink hot tea.) There are cafes, by the way, in virtually every museum, castle, and tourist attraction in this country, no matter how small the attraction. And all of them offer several varieties of hot coffee or hot tea, plus cakes and pastries. (The Brits are nuts for stopping for a hot drink and some cake when they go anywhere.) "Cold drinks" are cool but not cold, and I really like ice in my drinks and even freeze water in reusable bottles when I am in my RV.

I made my own iced tea the week I stayed in the cottage, and I was very happy. I also have a habit of making chocolate milk with cocoa powder and sugar added instead of the bottled or pre-made powders that have artificial ingredients in them, and having that before i go to bed every night. For the cottage, I bought cocoa powder, sugar, and milk, plus a lemon and a bunch of tea bags. I made ice in the freezer, so I was happy as a lark. So, today, I stopped at the local supermarket to get a couple of small bottles of milk--one for tonight and one for tomorrow. Figured they would stay cold in trunk. So, I also looked for bottled ice tea at the supermarket, and noticed that the bottles were labeled as "low calorie." So I checked several brands, even Lipton, and every single one had artificial sweetener listed after it listed some sugar! No wonder it was low calorie, and they had none that was just plain tea without anything added.

The funny thing is that the other day, I asked for a Coke in a hotel restaurant, but all they had was Pepsi, which was fine. It came from the fountain, not a bottle, and tasted really funny, like it had artificial sweetened in it, but the bar tender said it was not diet. However, he offered me a replacement from a can, and the taste was entirely different!!! So I started checking ingredients stuff in stores, and even found that regular Dr. Pepper here had a combination of sugar and artificial sweetener!! It was not labeled diet or low calorie or anything to indicate there was not just sugar in it!!! Shouldn't they warn you about artificial sweeteners?? In the U.S., it is usually in a prominent location on a product because people like my great-niece who has PKU can never consume artificial sweetener that might contain PHE, which can cause brain problems for them.

I know a lot of people prefer or don't object to artificial sweeteners, but if you are like me, you can really tell when the taste is off. So, i guess I am going to be doing a lot more label reading for the fine print.

This morning has been one of not great news. Sue, so sad about the 2 year olds. Having been to Yellowstone many times, including during fires, this flooding is unbelievable! A friend from Michigan and 2 of his buddies were on their way there on motorcycles, but they have switched to Plan B. My aunt called this morning just after I got up and disturbing news about two of my cousins - one has advanced Parkinson's disease and one in early stages of dementia and her husband is becoming a bigger jerk than usual.

Catherine, seems you and I are on the same wavelength about procrastination! Cloudy mornings don't help, but at least sun is coming out. I need to start going room by room when I get back from my trip. Monica and I are going to try the Costco/Walmart run this afternoon that my knife slip postponed last week. Martha, how is your finger doing? Given the gap in mine, I'm sure stitches would have been good. Sue, the fence peepers are so cute! Barbie, hope whatever you have doesn't hang around. I read 'doctor in a box' as walk-in clinic? Sheila, scenic route sounds great!

Just noticed my nose is peeling. We sat on the deck at the kids' Saturday and got some sun. River is up and fast with snow runoff so there was a lot of river traffic. We are already planning to go rafting again next year during runoff.

Still terrible heat wave here I'm hoping only 2 more days but I think that is wishful thinking.

Judy, I wondered when you listed the clothing you were taking and thought you would be cold. I always took my Barbour coat when I went and didn't wear typical American shoes like sneakers so I would blend in and not be labeled, especially in England where oddly we ran into more people who didn't like Americans. I know how you feel about not being able to find ice. I used to crave and eat ice all the time and doctors said it was because of my low blood count. Now that is is up I no longer crave ice. My DH would be so happy to be in Scotland. After co-teaching summer class there with his best friend for so many years he really became attached to the landscape and way of life.

Velda I'm sorry your helper didn't work out.

doing stuff out of order usually much later when I get on the computer after crocheting for a couple rows... but here at the dining room table watching my dgd make supper so doing the computer stuff will then go the couch and crochet
I know that all entrances where closed for awhile read where 10000 where evacuated from Yellowstone imagine that the entrances where closed so no one could come in and they could utilized the road fully for getting people out... my niece told me that the fair grounds in Jackson and other area's were made into make shift campgrounds... I don't know what they will do with those driving cars.. hopefully they had accommodations somewhere. She was also telling me about Gardner Mt... which is where so much of the flooding happened as I understand it... making it so that no one can get out or in due to the roads... it's just out side of the North entrance to Yellowstone and where that house took a tumble into the river.... one of my "friends" on FB posted a picture of the flood and one of the comments was asking if the water is going to flow into Jackson lake unfortunately it all happened on the east side of the divide and headed to New Orleans... :o Jackson Lake could have used it it is so low as of now... Snake river when I was driving by it was running fast and furious but not full yet... as I understand the North entrance will not be opened at all for the remainder of the year ... I'm sure that they will have a better idea later if the repairs/ rebuilding will take longer than that or not... I think that the rest of the park will resume but it may take a few days... guess that too will be up to better judgment later...
so sad about those two little ones... where they twins? relatives? just sad... but it is nice that the community is getting some of the monetary help that is needed...
Barbi get to feeling better... from what I understand is that they do have a RX that helps if it's CoVid but one also needs to get it sooner than later...
when my dd was younger she had anemia and chomped on the ice if there wasn't a 10 lb bag in the freezer something was wrong... it was automatic when out and about come home with ice... they finally
did a iron infusion and the chomping stopped too bad I like ice in my drinks and she rarely has it any more  it seems like I read somewhere that the Brits don't understand several things about the Americans and that is one of them our obsession with ice.... me I like stuff either really cold or stuff that is suppose to be hot really hot...
you all have a great day will perhaps pop back
sheila
told you I would be back
forgot to mention that it's going to get cold enough tonight in Jackson that my niece is going to take the planters and put them into the garage cause it's going to freeze or that is the prediction ugg :o
