Royal Thursday

Let's start our day with a good morning here.

Royal Thursday

Postby JudyJB » Thu Jun 02, 2022 7:40 am

I am resting my knee this morning in my hotel room and watching the trooping of the colors on TV. I am interested in the UK royal pageantry, although I would not want to be part of the royal family. For one thing, it would be very difficult to work for your grandmother and have her and your father determine how much money you got, how you spent it, and what you did with your life. It would be especially hard to be an "also ran" second, third, or fourth child, or the child of one of these, especially knowing you had just as much "royal" blood as all the others. It must be very, very hard growing up to know that you will never be as important as your sibling or your cousins. Anyway, the parades this morning were interesting and well done.

I wanted to go to the Viking museum today or tomorrow, but it is completely booked because today and tomorrow are national holidays, giving people a four-day weekend, so there are a lot of people taking advantage of being able to take a long weekend holiday. However, I probably will go to the James Herriot museum in this town of Thirsk. I have a slightly flat tire in the car I have rented and the car rental agencies are all closed today, as are the tire shops, so I need to call the local road service company to have them put air in the tire. I will be staying for all of next week and weekend in a town about 25 miles from here, so I can deal with the rental company on Monday, and schedule the Viking museum next week when the kids are in school!!

Updated my blog last night, so you can read about my adventures yesterday driving my rental car and with my GPS in York, if you are interested.

Judy, when I was in Lafayette I saw a car with a picture of the Queen on the back seat window. I thought that was kind of strange. If I had seen the people I think I would have ask them if they knew the Queen. :P

I called about my a/c and someone is coming this afternoon. Probably late this afternoon. The central unit is 16 years old so I am probably looking at a new unit. They don't make things like they use to and this house was built like motorhomes. They cut every corner they could.

UPDATE: Knee feels a bit better from my day mostly resting it. My feet were sore from all the walking, also. Plus, I called Enterprise and got someone from the regional office on the phone. I told her about my now very flat tire, and she gave me the number of the AA road service company that handles their vehicles. She sent someone out, and he just finished finding a hole in the tire and repairing it, plus checking the air pressure in the other tires. Enterprise will pay, so I am good to go out tomorrow. It is almost time for dinner here, and I really want to pick up a few things at the local Tesco Superstore, but I will wait for morning after I visit the Herriot museum. I have a cottage for a week starting tomorrow, so I will need things like milk, bread, and eggs, etc. Want to get most things at the big Tesco because there are only tiny village grocery stores near Danby.

Also, I washed my only pair of jeans this morning, and you would not believe the color of the water! I have that one pair of jeans and two thinner pairs of cotton long pants, but they are easier to wash in the bathroom sink. I have worn the jeans three times and they looked clean, but apparently were a lot dirtier than I thought they were. They are now dripping over the tub. They will probably not be completely dry by morning, but at least I can lay them out in the car trunk to finish!! At least they are now clean. (I knew I would be washing things out in the sink, so I brought some dry soap sheets that dissolve in hot water and do a good job of cleaning clothing. I will have washer in the cottage, luckily.)

Hello, Judy, I, too, am enjoying your blog as I "travel along with you". Thank you!

Hope you enjoy the museum, Judy! Many (many!) years ago I went to the York area by train looking for the hills and dales of the Herriot (Alf Wight) books. This was long before there was ever any thought of a museum there - and Mr. Wight was still practicing at the time!!

I had only a few very brief hours to spend in the area. I didn't have a car, I hadn't planned this very well, and in those days it was not well known that the town of Thirsk was the actual setting of Mr. Wight's books.

I never made it to Thirsk, but the area around was really lovely. I shall never forget it.

And, boy, did I have a problem understanding the York area dialect!

At the train station, I asked a clerk behind the ticket counter when the train to the town of Towcester was due to arrive, being very careful to pronounce the name correctly (or so I thought!).

The clerk looked at me very strangely, and I could tell by the puzzled expression on his face that he hadn't a clue what I was talking about. So I repeated myself, very carefully: "Tow-cest-er".

Finally the light dawned! "Ew! Eh, ye wanna go to Toaster, is it?"

And "Toaster" it was (as I stood there picturing an image of my toaster on my kitchen counter waiting for me at home).

We both had a good laugh on that one.

Afternoon All, it’s only 76° here but very humid and dangerous for youngsters like me. Severe storms late today. Wish I could leave plants near railing to get rain water but afraid of wind and hail. I puffed the inhaler and took an allergy med and went for a haircut. I’m not a fan of tater tots stuffed with cheese and bacon. It was like eating a mouthful of melted cheese. Judy, glad your knee is better, you are handling the obstacles like a champ. Hope there is a pretty English garden near your cottage. Brenda, post a picture of your garden, please. Martha, good luck with your ac. Be safe

I am enjoying your blog Judy. Bringing back many fine memories.
The college softball World Series is this weekend. Just realized it has been 20 years since I was there in person. The crowds were much smaller then!

Judy, I'm really enjoying traveling with you here and the blog. I'm glad the injury is healing and really look forward to the Herriot visit. And Anne, I laughed out loud about the pronunciation. Thanks for that. Martha, I hope the AC can be fixed.

I've been off this morning, if running to the bank and hardware store isn't counted lol. I did stop on the way home and got a fresh made bacon, egg and cheese bagel for my breakfast/lunch. I love this coffee shops food even if I don't drink coffee. And love that they are open till I think 1, as I don't do eggs early and can run over occasionally after continental breakfast and get myself a treat. 1/2 is left for tomorrow.

BJ, your comment on Virgin River rang a bell - it's season 4 coming and yes, season 3 was a dud! Martha, hope they get the a/c fixed! Brenda, nice to see your post! Judy, glad your knee is better. Beth, glad you are getting a break.

The month is off to a good start! I stopped in the office yesterday because the pile of things under the stairs outside my door is messier and growing. Amanda (not the manager) came right over and put the sign up - only took 6 weeks. The guy with most of it has moved it! I had pictures of that and the unlandscaped area to send to corporate, but I came home yesterday and they were weed eating that area over the well! Turns out my upstairs neighbors wonder when I buy groceries! Guess they don't see me when I come home with a large purchase every few weeks. :)

We are supposed to be getting a few days of rain. 76 out right now - at last!

Anne, on my first trip to London, I tried to find “Lester” square but could not find it on maps. Turned out to be Leicester Square!! Same pronunciation issue. And on train this trip, I had to keep asking people what the announcer was saying over PA. Who was it who said we were two countries divided by a single language??

Judy, the impressive building in Edinburgh appears to be the Edinburgh University. I love all the old architecture.

I have air conditioning. It was a capacitor in the outside unit. Not as bad as I feared, $300. I don't think I could have stayed here another night without a/c.

last night I was reading the posts when my sister in law needed to talk to me about a form I needed to fill out since I didn't understand it we called my brother since the tv was so loud we went to another room to talk it out with brother and fill out the form... heard the tv go off just as I was about to return to reading and the lights went out... so went and turned off the computer unplugged the cord as it is across the room had I been thinking I would have taken the computer into the other room and finished reading and posting... but didn't think about it ... so didn't even finish reading let alone post...
my youngest brother had his left knee replaced yesterday and is home... even has walked niece said that he isn't shuffling but his normal stride... sounds really good... :P
my eldest dd has done acupuncture for her knee am giving that some thought...
yesterday I actually did something a load of clothes... you know that one load of clothes is 6 trips up and down the stairs? one to put it in one to put it in dryer and one to bring back up and each one is up and down... made it to the store what day weds was dumbfounded the amount was over 100 so finally remembered to look at the receipt today to see what I bought that cost so much ... they miss coded the carrots as 10 bunches at 1.79 came to over 17 dollars for a bag of loose carrots... :o I need to take the carrots back in so they can weigh them and return lots of money... even at that it was an expensive trip
glad Judy your knee is feeling better and you had a rest say ... enjoyed the blog think I am caught up... I look at the old architecture and wonder how in the world did they build that humongous building so many years ago without all of the modern stuff we have to build big buildings and to see the can't think of the word I'm looking at the artistic work that is done on those old building .... it's totally amazing
that sounds like you had a good gtg... glad you were able to meet up... Donna (Cricket) I think lives in Escondito too bad she isn't on her any more...
so yesterday I did something that I can actually say I did and today aww we can't say much ... unless playing on the phone counts  plus visiting with sister in law for a bit...
Martha glad you A/C was fixed and not as bad as feared I know that when mom had heater issues this winter we worried that it would end up being a new one but was just a part and never recieved the bill have a feeling it went to brother as he is the one that called the repair people
Beth treasure the few free hours you get
you all have a great night hopefully I will remember to start dishwasher
