Good Morning g. Hard to believe it’s the end of May already. But our spring has been bouncing all over weather wise. Been cool these past few days and finally some much needed rain on Thursday. Supposed to head into the 80’s by Monday, but then back to more normal 70’s by mid week.
Gaylord has made tremendous progress in cleaning up behind the tornado, thanks to the efforts of all the volunteers who jumped into action after it hit. 38 businesses have been destroyed or damaged, haven’t heard how many homes yet. Help has been offered to all those who need it, donations have poured in. Thuy actually had to ask people not to donate more clothing and stuff. On overload. Now it’s stuff like dish soap, sponges, household vleaners, chapstick, suntan lotion, work gloves and that sort of stuff, gift cards etc. United Way, who have been coordinating relief efforts has no movedthe base back to their building from the church, Red Cross still has resources if needed, the church shelter is stiil available, but most people have been taken in by family, friends and neighbors or put up in local hotels. United. Way has received enough monetary donations to pay for 90 days Stay for those who need it. I worked with a group of volunteers on Wednesday, cleaning vegetative debris from what looked to be the last yard needing it. The volunteer coordinator who was overseeing all the cleanup efforts has now relinquished that position as she needs to get back into her full time job. As of today, the city is taking over the cleanup efforts and wrapping up debris removal management. They are finishing up business debris cleanup. All homes needing temporary roof tarping, windows boarded up etc., are taken care of thanks to generosity of roofing companies and others. It’s now up to insurance companies. The volunteer cleanup efforts are now turning to the mobile home park. I’m helping with my cousin’s garage sale this weekend, so will check next week and see where volunteers are needed. But tbe town is well on the way, just a tremendous accomplishment in a week, and though supply shortages will hamper recovery, hopefully in a year, all will be back to normal. A lot of operating businesses have offered employment to those who’s businesses are closed or destroyed.
Now it’s time to celebrate Memorial Day weekend. And for Gaylord, time to start the celebration of the City’s Centennial. There will be activities going in today and tbrough the summer, Farmers Market is openig for the season and Monday of course will be Memorial Day doings. It’s also the beginning of tourist season and the traffic coming north yesterdsy was very heavy, campgrounds are full etc.
