Last Saturday in May

Let's start our day with a good morning here.

Last Saturday in May

Postby Colliemom » Sat May 28, 2022 5:36 am

Good Morning g. Hard to believe it’s the end of May already. But our spring has been bouncing all over weather wise. Been cool these past few days and finally some much needed rain on Thursday. Supposed to head into the 80’s by Monday, but then back to more normal 70’s by mid week.

Gaylord has made tremendous progress in cleaning up behind the tornado, thanks to the efforts of all the volunteers who jumped into action after it hit. 38 businesses have been destroyed or damaged, haven’t heard how many homes yet. Help has been offered to all those who need it, donations have poured in. Thuy actually had to ask people not to donate more clothing and stuff. On overload. Now it’s stuff like dish soap, sponges, household vleaners, chapstick, suntan lotion, work gloves and that sort of stuff, gift cards etc. United Way, who have been coordinating relief efforts has no movedthe base back to their building from the church, Red Cross still has resources if needed, the church shelter is stiil available, but most people have been taken in by family, friends and neighbors or put up in local hotels. United. Way has received enough monetary donations to pay for 90 days Stay for those who need it. I worked with a group of volunteers on Wednesday, cleaning vegetative debris from what looked to be the last yard needing it. The volunteer coordinator who was overseeing all the cleanup efforts has now relinquished that position as she needs to get back into her full time job. As of today, the city is taking over the cleanup efforts and wrapping up debris removal management. They are finishing up business debris cleanup. All homes needing temporary roof tarping, windows boarded up etc., are taken care of thanks to generosity of roofing companies and others. It’s now up to insurance companies. The volunteer cleanup efforts are now turning to the mobile home park. I’m helping with my cousin’s garage sale this weekend, so will check next week and see where volunteers are needed. But tbe town is well on the way, just a tremendous accomplishment in a week, and though supply shortages will hamper recovery, hopefully in a year, all will be back to normal. A lot of operating businesses have offered employment to those who’s businesses are closed or destroyed.

Now it’s time to celebrate Memorial Day weekend. And for Gaylord, time to start the celebration of the City’s Centennial. There will be activities going in today and tbrough the summer, Farmers Market is openig for the season and Monday of course will be Memorial Day doings. It’s also the beginning of tourist season and the traffic coming north yesterdsy was very heavy, campgrounds are full etc.

Sounds like all of you are doing okay, keeping busy with dsy to day things. Judy having a good trip to UK so far, Barbie, enjoy your trip to SD, Anita, glad you had a good trip. Beth, hope you finally got some sleep and Tina, have fun at the Dog Show.

Tine to get some breakfast and get ready for my day. Couple of garage sales I want to hit before I head to cuz’s. Have a nice day all.

Good morning Sue & all!

Sue, it's good to hear the clean up in Gaylord has been successful and hope things continue to move in a positive direction. Other than going to church tomorrow, we don't plan on being on the highway during the busy Memorial weekend. Beth, did the last customer show up for the last room? Lyn, Barbie & Catherine, have fun at your gtg. Shirl, hopefully you won't need to get in the holiday traffic. I know it's a bear where you live. Karen, I enjoyed what you wrote about the area you live in and how you love your house and if you could move it, you would!

We're already in the low 80's and will top off in the low 90's. There is a chance of scattered showers later in the day. We got maybe 10 drops yesterday. There is a great Memorial weekend sale at our local Winn Dixie, so we're going to empty the small refrigerator in the back room and turn into the freezer mode and fill it with the meats on sale. We've already gotten a couple of the large BOGO ham steaks but we'll get more of those and an assortment of the other meats.

This is the third time I have tried to post. I want to say to Sue how wonderful her town has been to the residents who suffered damage due to the tornado that hit Gaylord! And to Sue herself for all her help.
The coach of our soccer team is from England. Her article in this morning paper makes me feel ashamed. I believe all A15 rifles should be illegal to sell. NO ONE needs a high capacity rifle. If that statement is too political for this forum, too bad. I am feeling sick about the kids in Texas.

Hi ladies ~~~
Just after noon time here in the Poconos. Rained a bit late yesterday, but has been raining all morning today. That's OK, because I'm really behind for making reservations. Needed to work around a rally in Indiana and Labor Day weekend. So I'm covered for now. If it keeps raining this afternoon, I may just stay in all day and look for routes to Texas for my fall annual stuff. I have seen quite a few waterfalls around here, and also Grey Towers NHS. The grounds were beautiful, but but access to the mansion is still closed due to Covid, and only specific photo tours are offered.

Sue, it's wonderful to hear that so many people have helped in your area. Still devastating, and between FEMA and insurance companies, rebuilding my be slow. Such destruction is sad, especially with summer vacationers wanting to head that way.

Lyn, I'm with you on banning military grade assault rifles. Private citizens have no reason to have them.

That's my news for today. Stay well ladies.

I don't think your statement is political. Lyn, I definitely think we are both on the same page with this one.

I have been thinking about this over and over during the last several days: Why on earth would any civilian - not to mention a teenager - possibly need an automatic weapon like an AK15? And who in their right mind would think to sell such a thing to a . . . teenager?

It purely boggles the mind.

My kids are off to Yosemite for the weekend. With (apparently) so many crazies, everywhere, I worry about them going. To a National Park, no less!

What is the world coming to?

Hello, Ladies,

I got home from my trip Thursday evening. Learned the Subaru isn't the greatest in the wind and I drove in it for days! Youngest grandchild graduated high school - don't think she even cared I was there. Got to visit briefly with 2 older grandchildren after graduation. Grandson went to my aunt's to visit before I got there Thursday - I had just said 'afternoon', but I should have been more specific. Daughter and I ignored each other except when I got the stink eye once and was told granddaughter didn't want photos posted - which has been daughter's rule forever! Enjoyed the visit with aunt, cousin and his daughter. Solved a genealogy mystery while going through things.

Aunt usually watches news several times a day along with shows, but she left the TV off until off until Sunday night. That's significant because she turns it way up even with hearing aid. Then she mumbles to me and I can't hear her. Sue, what a devastating tornado, but so good to see everyone pulling together! I haven't read everything on here and I will catch up with Judy's blog soon. Glad there is to be a GTG in San Diego! Shirl, tourist season here as well. Sorry to see my across the neighbor pulling out as she moves on. Not too sure about the 2 big dogs in seat of small U-Haul truck!

Unfortunately, no one came in and organized for me. :) Today marks one year in the apartment and I still don't have it together! Big news is they moved the dog poop station so I don't have to look at it! Have to do list plus it's time to get ready for Iceland/Ireland trip June 26. Looks like we might finally get some decent weather!

Remembering those who gave all.

it's sounds like you have had lots of help in your community Sue I am sure that it is all welcome... and that you were in the position to help as well
I got caught up on Judy's blog couldn't find it one night operator error as I clicked on the wrong link and didn't go back  sounds like the opportunity of a life time.
went and got fresh flowers and some potted mums to take to the cemetery tomorrow
my son's car broke down so they went back home his wife came and picked them up and took them home... I was really hoping that all of my grandchildren would have been together it would have been the first time in a long time :( but guess it won't happen this time
it's been raining as predicted would be nice if it decided not to tomorrow but we will see
Anita what was your break through??? glad you had a good trip...
you all have a great day

Anita, FAMILY! I think my son might have the right idea, not claim any. No one has organized things for me either and it's been 16 years. It seems to have gotten worse since Harold died, I just don't care anymore.

Sheila, $29 for one pie is a bit much.

I'm enjoying Judy's trip blog. I would need someone to lead me around or I would never find anything.

It got down to 65 last night but was up to 96. It was nice this morning before it started to get hot. I went to Lafayette mostly to go to Petsmart but had to check out TJ Maxx. Only bought some cookies, like I need cookies. I forgot I was wanting ice cream for my cobbler.

I don't think any one but the police or military needs assault weapons either. Every time anyone mentions gun control some start screaming the government is going to take all their guns. Politicians should have to walk around with a sign that says how much money they have taken from the NRA and gun manufacturers.

I agree with everything said about assault weapons. I just read an article about Switzerland. The NRA tries to compare to them, but they have strict rules on gun ownership that makes sense. So I'm not sure why they use them as an example. Their rules make sense.

I went to bed before the last room checked in last night and probably will do the same tonight. I'm just always afraid that if help is needed I won't hear the bell after my hearing aids are out. Another full house tonight and right now one room short of one tomorrow.

Good late, gale force evening gals!

It sounds like a freaking hurricane outside! The whole house is shaking and is terribly noisy from the winds blowing! I Have everything shut tight on the porch and am still getting air blowing into the living room thru the cat door! These weekly wind/dust storms are getting really tiresome! This is the loudest I can remember for quite awhile! It is scary!
The cover for my bike is starting to tear from the winds blowing it so hard. I put some heavy folding foot stools on it tonight to hold it down some so it isn't being blown to pieces.

At work today, I could actually feel the vibrations from the wind on the building! I figured it was either a mild earthquake or the high winds. I checked, and no earthquakes today.

Not sure if my friends will still have their BBQ tomorrow evening or not. This wind is supposed to continue until Monday morning. Glad it will be over by the time I leave for SD. I don't want to get blown off the mountains I will be driving over!

I need to put my laundry away and do a little packing yet tonight. I was gonna do it earlier but Lola left a big dump in her litter box (next to my bedroom) and I had to let it air out for awhile. :o

I frosted my hair last night but accidentally used a small frosting kit for partial frosting jobs. So I had barely enough stuff to cover all my hair. Then it dried out about halfway thru. I wet it down some but finally rinsed it out after an hour. So my hair is more honey colored than light blonde. It looks OK but not what I was wanting. It will tone down a bit in the next week or two.

This place looks so much bigger now with all the boxes and junk out of here! Still have a little bit left to do but it sure is a big improvement! Anita, I love what you said... "Today marks one year in the apartment and I still don't have it together!" ... I am going on 3 years here and still a work in progress! Then there is the shed to go thru and organize, and then the storage unit...luckily that is only 5X5 and only half full. But the cost of that is over $50 per month now so the sooner I get to that the better. I can only imagine how much dust is inside there! It just has a garage door that comes down and there are small gaps all around the door so lots of dust gets in there. I have most things covered up but it still finds its way into little nooks and crannies!

I don't know if I will get much sleep tonight with this wind howling outside! Makes me very nervous. Maybe I can run my air purifier on high for white noise to drown it out some.

Oh, and yes, I agree with everything that has been said about the gun situation. But as long as the NRA owns the politicians, nothing will get done about it. And now with all the thousands (or more) of those guns out there in civilian hands, it will be all but impossible to get rid of them. Every time gun control starts getting talked about, everyone goes crazy and starts buying more guns. OK, I'm done...
Barbie, Romeow, and Sophie, missing Lola! (and lots of ferrets running around in my heart!)
