Monday May 9

Let's start our day with a good morning here.

Monday May 9

Postby Shirlv » Mon May 09, 2022 7:58 am

Good morning all, the storm has moved on and the sun is shining. I struggle to find something to post every day. My post all seem to be about me and I. The weather here hasn’t been as bad as in other parts of the country so hate to post that too. My bubble is very small and boring. I overcooked the pork roast but a little gravy helped that. There was a lot of texts and pictures between family yesterday so the day went fast. I grumble about technology but it has made my golden years easier. BJ, I like to cook and it gives me more control over what goes in my meals. Not big on cake so no bakery visits but always have ice cream in the freezer. Leftovers for dinner, laundry and checking crops today. Be safe

Good morning Shirl. Hey I live in my small bubble too and not much news but still like to read everyone's posts. I usually post about weather, food and housekeeping LOL Soon I will get to post about planting if it ever warms up. 37, foggy and rained during the night so will still wait a bit. I have been cruising some of my cooking sites. Trying to find something different to make but not too busy and not with a bunch of things in it I never heard of. I am pretty much a basic cook. I have found a couple that sound kind of good so put them in my copymethat app. I have some leftover ham from Christmas that I need to do something with, thinking maybe scalloped potatoes and ham, and some split pea soup with the ham bone. We shall see.

Mornin' ladies~~~
I'm in my own little bubble too, but it moves around. ;)

All hitched up and leaving in a few to head towards two stops iN PA. Hopefully to see Sharon and the Flight 93 Memorial. Then east for another week to visit an old neighbor friend. Slowly getting towards Acadia NP. Then no real clue other than back towards Goshen for a rally in late August before heading south.

Have a good day everyone. The sun finally made an appearance yesterday and today after 23 days. Sun airways makes it better.

Good Morning, All the Mother’s Day plans got canceled yesterday as the daughter tested positive for Covid! I spent a very quiet day at home.
The daughter is doing well, with only complaint of tiredness. She is in contact with her Doctor as she is immune suppressed. She thinks she was exposed on her flight home from NH.
We had plans for this week to go to the nursery. That is all canceled now.
My NH daughter called me. She still has it in her head that me getting a cat would ruin the condo.
It’s cool here. I feel kinda down. Maybe doing my pool laps will perk me up.

Good morning gals! My alarm didn't go off this morning for some reason but luckily I woke up early anyways. One more day of work and then 2 days off! Whew!

Yesterday the winds got so bad that the sun couldn't even get thru the dust! I looked like a dark dreary day. The National Weather Service posted a Severe Dust Storm Warning for the valley which I haven't seen very often here. :o Wind gusts up over 80 mph thru the passes and along the freeway. My friends Debbie & Dave were coming back from LA and said it was terrible driving back, between the wind and the very low visibility.

It looks like it is still windy today but not as bad and the sky is blue. At least it has cooled down quite a bit. It will be in the low 80's for a few days but by next weekend the highs are predicted to be 108* .

My teeth recovered from whatever brought on that pain the other night! That was so odd and very painful! Am still dealing with bloating and gas so not sure what is causing that. Maybe a little dehydrated too.

I had a mom come in yesterday shortly before we closed with two young boys. They were African American. I haven't had much experience with black hair. I have cut it with the clippers before but mom wanted a scissor cut. I wasn't happy at all with how it was turning out. I apologized and asked her if she wanted my coworker to finish cutting it but she said no, it was OK. So I finished it the best I could. I ended up giving her a discount on it. She gave me a $10 tip so she must have been happy with it. Such a different scenario than what happened last week!

I better get ready for work here. Have a good day!

Good morning ladies!

Lyn, I'm so sorry to hear about your daughter having Covid. Three members of our congregation flew to Ireland several weeks for a hiking vacation and the day after they arrived in Ireland, two of them tested positive for Covid. I'm sorry, but there's no way I'd get on a plane right now, or a train or a ship.

We basically stay in our little bubble, too. The weather is nice here and we top off in the high 80's most days with lots of sunshine. Yesterday we bought two tomato plants that I'll repot into larger containers and I also potted the green onions that had been sitting in water. I'm looking forward to seeing how they'll do. Thank you Shirl and others for your for your patio container ideas.

Tomorrow we're leaving for a mini vacation for a couple days. Everything we'll be doing will be outside and it'll be fun to get away and have different scenery. I'm going to make crab cakes for one of our meals and a couple easy sides.

Well, I talked about me and food, too. Lol! Have a good day!

Checking in. The 50th college reunion two weekends ago was interesting. Transylvania's Graduating class that year was just a bit over 200 (which actually was about the size of my high school graduating class). The smaller sizes do make reunions more interesting even for someone who has never been a social butterfly like myself comes back to visit. In high school I had the advantage of having been the yearbook editor, so there were more names and faces in my memory bank and more of the few close friends I had actually showed up four years ago. Out of the 200 college graduates, the reunion committee counted 35 that had already passed and only about 35 of us showed up. What I found interesting is that after fifty years folks seem to cross over the old social divisions of sorority and fraternity lines and include everyone. Call it maturity of life or recognition of survival. But folks did include me in conversations that hardly would have said hello 50 years ago. I think I was the only one who shows up by myself.

On another interesting note, I did decide to take the RoadTrek to the reunion so I wouldn't have to think about checking motels for bedbugs, roaches or loud neighbors. The difficulty came when I found that the very large campground at the horse park was completely full due to the Rolex Event (Yes, I did think of you horse lovers, Cheryl.) Without any other close campground I figured I would park at either a Cracker Barrel or the Cabelas, when on the Friday morning right before I headed south I got the bright idea to call the alumni office and...I got permission to park on campus. There are benefits to smaller universities. Anyway I was able to walk to everything and Lark and I were able to walk around the campus and around the neighborhood that is full of some of the most elegant and majestic old homes and tree lined streets. The homes and the settings reminded me of Savannah, but of course when I went to school in Lexington, I had never seen Savannah, I only knew that in those days, without cars, getting out of the dorm and walking through the neighborhood was one of my mental health cures for the stress of college. Each house seems full of history and stories that could be told. Whole novels of lives right before one's imagination.

This past weekend was spent in Lima,Ohio, at a 4 day dog show were Jane spent her time helping others pick up points. Some shows are like that. Good things were happening for other people. And yes it was raining most everyday except yesterday. This particular show site is outside with a large covered area where we can stand will waiting but then the actual rings run out into the grass. This weekend the rings ran out into the rain and the water which by Friday had turned the grass into some mud here and there. I did like that even the handlers who generally dress in suits and dresses, were now dressed for success for rain and mud. About 80 percent of us showing wore whatever worked. For some of the handlers even that was jeans and paddock boots and raincoats. One person I know who shows Goldens commented that her dog thought she was crazy, since she was asking the dog to go gait(trot) around in the flooded grass in conditions that the dog would never have been allowed to muck around in the yard at home.

And since it had rained heavily earlier in the week, RVs were getting stuck trying to park on Wednesday even. The Lima Kennel Club show grounds have their own RV sites and electrical hook ups. What they don't have is gravel or concrete pads. Everything is on grass. Some areas are more elevated than others. Which means the rigs and even the mini vans can get stuck anywhere while certain areas with enough rain become small lakes. I did get electric on what I have observed, from past rainy shows, as high ground. I still didn't get to back all the way in before one of my rear wheels began to spin but my neighbor and a fellow owner handler was there to monitor my progress and I was able to stop immediately. By Sunday, following a very windy day and half of drying out, I was able to pull out. But from Wednesday watching the larger rigs getting pulled out of the mud to even park, to Sunday watching the huge tractor spend the day going from one area of the grounds to another methodically pulling out the larger Rigs, I felt lucky to just have my RoadTrek to worry about. And yes the Lima Kennel Club always makes sure that their tractor is on the grounds and available. If they didn't fewer people would even bother to enter and show up. This is the glamorous life of dog show people that isn't represented at Westminster or down at Orlando in December, but these are some of the same handlers....

Enough storytelling/sharing for one day. But since I don't cook, not currently creating any art pieces, don't currently worry about or spend my limited resources of energy on home improvements and gave up on gardening years ago, I wanted to do my fair share. And I do enjoy reading about all your endeavor. Someday I will no longer have my dogs to distract me from other worthwhile responsibilities and hobbies, so I will enjoy them while I can. I will leave you with visions of RVs laying down extra large ruts in the grass, spinning tires and sinking into the soft earth up to their axles. While Jane and I carefully pulled out, hooked up our trailer full of equipment (the "trailer" is sometimes used as a Honda Fit) and smiled and waved at the nice man on the exceptionally large tractor.

Geeezz, have to grumble to someone. Tried to place a Walmart order but they were out of many things. Bright idea, Amazon had my can red salmon. Last time I bought it ar $8 but now it is $14-20. Raising a young family with limited income we ate a lot of potatoes. Think I better start sticking up. Beth, it might be cheaper to fish salmon in Alaska like Pewterman. Karen, do you have a favorite brand of salmon? Tina, ingenious trailer idea. Will make me smile all day. Back to laundry.

Shirlv I like Black Top brand canned salmon. Walmart has small cans advertised for $4.48. I have noticed Amazon has increased some items to ridiculous amounts.
Tina sounds like the class reunions I have attended. The cliques had pretty much disappeared. It was really good you were able to park on campus. It sounds so much better than you dog show experience in the mud!
Irmi I hope you enjoy your mini vacation.
Lyn I'm sorry to hear your Mothers Day plans were cancelled and that your daughter doesn't want you to have a cat. Would she be ok with an older dog who is trained?

It is nice out here today but supposed to be record heat (90) for this time of year tomorrow and wouldn't you know I have plans to meet friends for lunch on a restaurant patio. I don't know if they would be comfortable eating inside or not as we all still wear our masks most of the time in public. Oh well maybe it won't be that hot at noon.

I grew up really, really disliking salmon. I'd only had canned. Then I had fresh salmon that wasn't bad. Then I had fresh Alaskan salmon and learned there was good salmon. Lol. So I haven't had salmon since my last Alaskan adventure.

Tina, great reading. Actually, I enjoy reading what everyone says. I'm mainly stuck talking weather. The winds have been so bad that i actually enjoy my early morning walks with Ty below they pick up again. Yesterday was terrible. Today will be bad but not as bad, I don't think.

It's chilly in the house, having had outdoors in low 40's last night. I'm not putting heater back on as by next Sunday weather people say it will be 97°! Rather not spend $ to warm house, only to spend more $ to cool it off! I'll be doing my usually Curves then treadmill. Today would be Mel's 79th birthday. Because of predicted thunderstorms and showers, I'm not heading the 50 miles to cemetery. He likes his peace and quiet, so I'm sure he's ok with that! We will go when weather warms up. We will toast him with sparkling cider and share good memories.
I don't garden, other than making sure my citrus have what they need and watching roses bloom.
Barbara, with all the gut issues you experience, maybe it's time to do a eliimination diet, giving up all junk food, all seed oils, all fruits and vegetables and grains , eating only beef and water for a while. If that sounds too drastic, at least remove all grains ( wheat, rice, corn, etc) for at least two months. If you feel better, add back one item at a time to figure out what itis that sets you off.
Have a good week everyone. One more family occasion in May (older sons birthday Saturday), then it's quiet until my birthday in September .

Beth, I had the same experience with old time fishy canned salmon. The red can salmon is more like fresh, solid, expensive and not fishy. I am not paying those prices though. I guess I will start getting Walmart orders delivered to daughters. Can only have deliveries to management package room here and not an option for me. Everything I wanted could only be shipped. Life is getting even more complicated.

My high school class was too small for things like fraternities and sororities, and there weren't even any hard cliques. Sometimes after football or basketball games, we used to wait for the players to change and then a bunch of us would go out for pizza, but anyone was welcome. I remember that some of the girls had strict parents or were shy and homebodies, but we would often end up with 15-20 people, which was almost a quarter of our class. There was only one pizza place that would really accept our large group. And I have made some good friends planning reunions with some of the kids I knew but wasn't very close to way back when.

Saw the urologist today, and he gave me some good advice about diet. (My new internist suggested calcium supplements because of a slightly low bone density.) Most importantly, he said recent research said it was OK to take calcium supplements and eat a lot of milk products. I do drink milk at night and eat ice cream, but have stayed away from too much cheese or calcium supplements all my adult life because of kidney stone problems. He said my blood level of calcium was not horribly high. He also said the potassium supplements I had been prescribed were good for kidney stone formers like me. Then he ordered an ultrasound to see if I had any current stones, so when I checked out, they looked for dates and times and asked if I would like it done right away since there was an appointment available, so I jumped at that!! A two-fer in one trip to the doctor's office!! Went right over to radiology, and result was that i do have a stone but it is up high, so not blocking anything right now.

Had gotten up really early for my appt today so I will probably go to bed early. Don't want to take a nap so am trying to stay awake.

Good morning,

I read every morning and have responses to some things, but I guess I haven't been feeling very social. Reading news get worse and worse here and everywhere else which is depressing. Learning of more Covid cases among friends, acquaintances and their families than when we were in the height of the pandemic. Irmi, I definitely understand about planes and cruises, but I'm choosing to get in more adventures before my time is up. I did just get my 2nd booster.

Shirl, your granddaughter's Mother's Day remark brought the memory of my older grandson making a similar remark when he was in his teens. Warms the heart. Tina, sorry you needed that tractor!

We've had some sunny days although not terribly warm. I have actually been motivated! They are coming around to check our sprinkler and alarm systems today. I leave for Kansas next Monday and hoping I don't run into storms, but it's not like I haven't made a trip there this time of year before. At least I'll get warm! Sister-in-law had another biopsy and has a Stage 4 tumor 'near her organs' apparently where they don't expect to find one. Chemo was already slated for bladder cancer so will begin soon.
