Saturday Sleepyheads?

Let's start our day with a good morning here.

Saturday Sleepyheads?

...or Busy Bees?

Mornin' ladies~~~
Just a quick Howdy!

I'm really behind the times, but I don't understand the need for Hulu, Roku, etc. What are the benefits? Special movies, etc? We had cable eons ago and was canceled pretty quickly. When camping I just use OTA for local info, and if no OTA is around, use my Dish.

Nothing even itty bitty today. Just nosy. Have a good day!

Good morning, Cheryl.

The reason I am a Roku devotee is because, although I live in a small-ish city, there are some tall-ish buildings (LOL - not so tall, really, just taller than my house) nearby that block the OTA (Over-The-Air) signal; thus I am unable to receive any television OTA here at my home.

As for Dish - I am assuming that you are not using some kind of dish (small "d") but rather Dish network (large "d"). I am not aware of any kind of dish (either small or large  ) that brings in programming without at least some kind of minimal $$subscription$$.

Roku is streamed content, no kind of dish or antenna needed, all programming is streamed over the internet. The only thing needed is a broadband connection of some kind; Beth posted a bit ago of how she has even figured out how to use Roku using the bandwidth from her smartphone.

The Roku device is truly "plug-and-play": you plug it in, it works. No fancy programming or connections needed. I have seen the Roku device on sale for $29.00. That's it. No further monthly fees, no further fees of any kind (so long as you don't want some pay subscriptions, like HBO, for example, which cost extra). Programming on Roku is FREE, unless one wishes to subscribe to a pay channel, which are also available via Roku.

There are literally thousands of "channels" available through Roku, from full-length ballets, to films, to tv shows, to basic "fix-it" videos. ALL FOR FREE. Anything you might wish to watch, on every topic imaginable, is there waiting for you to watch it. Right now, at this very moment, or later on, on your schedule. FOR FREE.

About 10 years ago, when my Dish subscription (or maybe it was DirecTv, I forget which) went up to $75.00/mo. ($900.00/year!!) I dropped it and went with Roku, which was a pretty new technology "back then"  . I have never regretted this decision, and have never looked back.

Interesting aside: Had I continued to pay $75.00/mo over the last 10 years (not counting into the equation the fact that the fee is a lot more than $75.00 today) I would be out a fast $9,000.00 (yep, nine-thousand) dollars in fees for the ability to just watch tv. Last time I looked, one could almost buy a fairly decent new TT for this kind of money.

If you have any more questions, please ask. I LOVE my Roku.

Sorry, but I like my satellite TV, and I do watch a lot of it. It is company and something to do on those days when it is too cold or wet to go anywhere. Also, I do not have enough internet access to do any streaming. Mostly, I watch news and channels like the Smithsonian, Science, History, and such, although I do admit to be addicted to a few things like Life Below Zero.

Nice warm day today, and hardly any wind, so I am going for either a beachwalk or bike ride.

I'm not willing to pay for dish or DirecTV. I probably have hundreds of channels, most free, streaming on Roku. Judy my phone service with unlimited data is only $25/month. And I can still do ota or cable if it's provided where I am. I laugh about all the years I basically went without TV and now I'm a TV junky. From nothing to too much lol I actually find myself watching programs through my Roku more than the cable when I was at my site in Arizona. I'd be fine with them discontinuing cable there as it does get added to my annual dues.

I’ve spent the morning stringing $&#*+% fairy lights. The lights work so plugged into the timer and if they do not come on at dusk you will hear me scream in California. #2 Daughter brought my Christmas decorations stored in her garage. Bins are stacked in the middle of the floor and will stay there until the spirit moves me. Very little tv interests me since most is supposedly reality. I am a Amazon Prime member and subscribe to Brit box through Amazon. I like British mysteries and prime videos. Can someone explain to me: if AT&T needs me to upgrade my 5 yr old Samsung to stream them would a Roku streaming stick alleviate upgrading my tv. If not does this mean a Samsung tv is a problem for streaming anything. I’m so confused. Dinner is left over salmon cakes, green beans and a large glass of wine. Be safe

Shirl Samsung can be a bit of a problem for sure. I couldnt download some apps to my NEW Samsung tv as they were blocked by Samsung. And yes you can get a Firestick or a Roku to stream. Amazon owns Firestick I have had both and they are easy. Plug play sign in, easy peasy. Just have to make sure you have an HDMI port on the back that isnt being used. My other new tv in the family room, also a Samsung only had 2 HDMI ports 1 had cable in it and the other my sound bar so I had to buy a switch for extra HDMI's. Then I dumped the cable so had an extra one free. Living room tv has 3 HDMI so no problem there.

We had Dish network years ago. Only watched a few channels. The rate kept increasing then our favorite channel became a paid channel and we dropped dish. Since then it has been a antenna tv, which is pathetic. One can only watch reruns of Andy Griffith and Last Man Standing for so long. We both have used YouTube and Tubi to watch movies but the ads are overwhelming so I bought a Roku stick which we have to install. I have to get a new tv for the sewing room. The prese t tv will be donated to the Smithsonian. We will take the Roku to Yuma which has even more pathetic tv. I like to have a little noise in the evening when sewing or knitting.

I have Dish network (capital D) for RVs. It's a pay if you need it plan, so for example, while I'm here at Dad's taking care of things over the winter, I don't pay anything. Just need to reactivate my service when I want to use it, if I can't get any OTA where I'm camped. I have a dish receiver that i hook up to the camper. It's not installed on the roof of the camper.

I haven't tried out my Roku yet. May have questions when I do.

Life can sure change in a hurry! :o :o :o
This morning I was on the phone with Linda talking about my current predicament at work and trying to figure out what I should do. After our conversation, I decided to head to WM for a few things. On the way, I got a text from the old manager of the WalMart Great Clips, who is a good friend of mine. She wanted to talk to me so we met at WM where the shop is at. She asked if I would be interesting in coming back to work there. She said she talked to the owner and he is fine with that and also fine with me not doing styles or perms due to my shoulder issues (I will get that in writing!). I guess they are desperate for stylists. I told her to give me until Monday to let her know my decision.
The timing couldn't be more serendipitous! I went home and did a Pro and Con list for each job. I don't see any positive changes happening where I work now. The GC's shop is 10 minutes away versus 30 minutes away, so my gas consumption will be about 2/3's less per month, plus I won't have to make separate trips to WM since I will be working right there. I can work three days per week for the same amount of money I am making working 5 days at the pot shop. I can have Tuesdays off and play on the Putter's league again and other activities I want to join during my days off.
So I think I have made my decision...

I have been busy cleaning the house so Linda doesn't think I am a total slob! . I put up my tree on the deck and went thru all the bins of decorations. I only found a few things I want so I put all the rest of the bins on the driveway with a FREE sign on them. Linda will be here in the morning so we can head to Joshua Tree NP early before the crowds get there. I got my hiking stuff out but still need to get my camera batteries charged and ready.

Barbie, I’m glad you are leaving your present job. Think management was consuming their product. You were doing the managers job without the pay. Not a safe environment either. Now you want to know what I really think. Have fun tomorrow

Excellent! That pot job sounded like a disaster waiting to happen with all those people crowded into one room. If you did not come down with COVID, you could have had colds, flu, and who know what else, including allergy problems. Plus, the weird goings-on and not being able to predict what will happen the next day has to be really stressful. And a big negative is that as Shirl said, you are doing management work without getting paid as a manager. Not fair and not good people to work for.

How about working four days a week and putting some money aside for the next emergency? That would be more work, but it might help you feel more secure and reduce stress.

Good news, Barbie! Really glad to hear this - the thought of working in a small room with so many other people was really giving me the willies!! LOL. And I don't even work there!!

Congrats!

Geez!!! I just fell!

I was leaning over to turn off the porch light and lost my balance. I hit my forehead on some plastic bins and am feeling some pain in my right rear thigh and left knee now. Also a splitting headache coming on. Nothing is bleeding but I scraped it. I think I will have a heck of a bruise on my forehead since it is really red. I have ice on it now. I will be feeling this really bad tomorrow! I hope I can still go to JTNP with Linda. Will have to see how I feel in the morning.

Always something!
