Fall’s Comin Back Friday

Let's start our day with a good morning here.

Fall’s Comin Back Friday

Postby Colliemom » Fri Oct 15, 2021 8:08 am

Morning all. 45 degrees out this morning with a bit of fog in the air. Typical fall weather. After the past couple weeks of above normal temps, fall is returning with 50 degree weather and 40 degree nights. That of course sets off Lake effect rain showers. I much prefer the cooler weather. Fall color has peaked and leaves have been coming down every day. Nature is preparing for the long winters nap. It’s one of my favorite seasons. I love watching the transition. Course that means snow and cold, but it’s the cycle of life.

Judy, happy to hear about your blood work, that’s great. Irmi, same for Steve. Sounds like you two are really enjoying the Big Green Egg. That’s wonderful about the organ too. Shelia, I don’t blame your mom when asked about pain level. I get tired of it too. Beth, sounds like things are winding down.

I saw a new NP yesterday since mine is recovering from hip surgery. We talked about my foot issue, she looked it over and said she thinks it’s bad sprain. But she asked the Dr. To take a look and he did the usual flexing, checking etc., had me walk a few feet and concurred with her. But he said he would like another x-ray done just to double check and make sure there wasn’t a hairline fracture missed or something. I thought it was a good idea. Said the heel spur wasn’t a factor in this. Second x-ray came back okay, some soft tissue damage, that’s all. Said to exercise my foot and walk on it, but also rest and ice it too. Also suggested to use a pain relieving cream, which I have. So I am doing that and slowly getting mobility back. I think once the swelling goes down, I should be pretty much walking normal. I’m at a point, I’m ready to shed the Walker and use my cousin’s cane. I like this diagnosis better than the emergency room one.

Right now I need to finish getting ready to head to the Title office as we are closing on the lot this morning. Cuz is driving me in. Everybody has been so wonderful. Neighbors across the road have taken me under their wing, walking my dogs, picking up groceries, giving me some meals or snacks, taking in the mail etc. another neighbor is bringing me some chili for dinner tonight. Another neighbor went and blew the leaves of the walking path that I take care of for the POA. I’m blessed.

So, you all take care out there, stay healthy and safe.

Morning Sue and All. Still humid on the island but some relieve next week. Cleaned out the balcony planters. The cold weather plants are gone. They dint like the temperatures here. I don’t like Russian kale either. Will try a pot of tulip bulbs and hope for flowers in the spring. The only exciting event, birds built a nest in the outside vent for my dryer. A company had to come with a tall ladder to remove it. Dryer working better. #1 daughter got a new IPhone and all her text went to my IPad d with a loud drum roll. Startled me, don’t need that first thing in the morning. :D #1 granddaughter searching for ideas for Christmas gifts text me yesterday asking “how do you feel about profanity”? Ended up with a hilarious conversation about cuss words. Her mother thought her ideas for me were not appropriate for her grandmother. We thought that was so funny. Made shrimp lo mein sp? yesterday, would have been better with fresh vegetables instead of frozen. Well that’s a day in the life of a very senior citizen. Be safe

Sue, Sounds like you have some fabulous neighbors. I miss that in my new community. We were all very caring and helpful to each other, even if we didnt really know them we all stepped up for meals or drives etc. I am hoping to be able to forge some friendships here when Covid settles down. Glad the foot is a sprain, easy to deal with just often longer recovery time than an actual break. Shirl I too have emptied out all my containers. I am still waiting for my bulbs to arrive, as they ship in the fall, heck they better hurry up. Also playing around with food choices. I am trying to make something different for a change. Yesterday I had some Ling Cod and it was super good. I hate to buy too much tho and eat it for 2 or 3 days so I bought a small fillet. I had a bowl of fresh beets with it, I love fresh beets so I bought another batch yesterday when I was at the grocery store. I cook them in the Instant Pot and they come out perfect. Peel easily and no boiling them for an hour LOL I kind of loaded up on veggies as they are healthy and filling. Been doing good on my healthy eating diet this week. Keeping calories under 1400, so far so good BUT it has only been 5 days LOL

Karen, when I was a kid and we had family reunions a jar pickled beets with hard boiled eggs were always on the table. Yuck! Lol. Have read that beets are very healthy so I do eat them from cans. Saw a jar of pickled on the shelf and bought it to add to my salads. Yum. I’m waiting on planting tulip bulbs because it is so hot on the sheltered balcony. I have been here two years and only know one neighbor. Mine all work and I travel during the day and home in the evening. I miss my old neighbors too. I have been eating protein, veggies and fruit too for a couple of weeks.. Took a pasta break. :D

Sue, another x-ray was a good idea. My sister and Harold had fractures missed several times. I don't know who reads the x-rays at the local hospital but they aren't very good. I really need to make an appointment for a check up since the last time I went to the doctor was December 6, 2017. I have the date written on a paper stuck on my desk but that doesn't seem to do much good.

I got the truck to the shop yesterday. Guess today will be spent walking around with my phone in case they call me. Since I was messing around with the truck I thought about checking the registration and it expires this month. Started checking and I sent a check on September 2nd to renew it. I am usually good about putting things like that in my purse when they come in. Searched everywhere I might have put it and can't find it. The bank statement that the cleared check should be on will come today or tomorrow. I hope I don't have to go to the DMV and pay for it again. The DMV won't let you in unless you have an appointment.

We are suppose to have temperatures in the 70's this weekend and 40 tomorrow night. I kind of doubt it will get that low. It looks like we have already had a rain shower this morning.

I went to my meetup dinner last night. The BBQ was very good. I ordered a plate with 3 meats, ribs, brisket and chicken. I wanted enough so I could bring some home. It came with some cornbread which I had for breakfast. I wish I could find a small piece of brisket to cook. The stores around here want to sell a whole brisket and you almost need a loan to buy one. I guess I could buy one and cut it in pieces to freeze.

The trash truck just passed. They are running late, they usually pass about 6:00 am. That makes Sugar bark and wake me up so glad they are running late.

Shirl, I wish I could talk people into not giving me Christmas gifts. My grandson and his mother send me gift cards and I don't know what they need so I sent them gift cards. My sister gives me stuff I don't need and my step-daughter gives me a big tin of cookies which I don't need. I put the cookies in the freezer and they last most of the year. My camping group has a big campout the first weekend of December. They decide the year before what the gift exchange is going to be. Two years ago it was aprons which I don't wear. Last year it was pillows which I don't need. I don't remember what this year is suppose to be. Some years I play like Scrooge and pass on the gift. What I really need to do is set up a table by my RV and put all the camping stuff I don't use on to give away. At the last Sisters on the Fly campout I went to the host set up a garage sale for people to put stuff in and the money went to shelter for women.

I am still trying to figure out where to plant the 30 Daffodil bulbs I bought. I need to find the tool to plant bulbs and see if there would be room around the tree in the front. It took me years to get some started around the pecan tree and then the lightening killed it. I seldom see squirrels but they would come dig up the bulbs I planted.

Karen, what do fresh beets taste like? I have never eaten any except the pickled ones. I don't know that I have ever seen beets for sale here.

The outside cats would probably like for me to get dressed and go feed.

Martha, sometimes an early X-ray does not show a hairline fracture, because it just isnt visible yet. Once it begins to calcify in healing, then it shows up and can be seen. Not the radiologists fault, it's just how hairline fractures are. Bones are mostly a protein matrix, into which minerals are deposited (not just calcium). The body will deposit more to a injured/fracture, given nutrition and opportunity, and suddenly that hairline becomes visible as a thin line.
I'm off to Curves shortly. It will be warmer today. At 8 yesterday it was still just below 50, while today its 61. Possible rain in about a week. Sure hope so.
Judy so glad your blood work came back good. Steve too.
Leaves are slowly coming down but without the usual brilliant colors as trees are stressed by long drought. Sure wish the 80° temps would stop popping back up.

Good morning gals! :D

Sue, good that you have such helpful neighbors! I have had many sprained ankles since I was a kid. They take awhile to heal. Glad yours is getting better already.

Shirl, you need to put a piece of wire mesh over your dryer vent to keep the birds, etc, out.

Karen, I have always hated beets! My grandma tried so hard to get me to eat them but, nope! She would even put cut up beats in jell-o but that didn't work either  . My brother wouldn't eat them either.

Martha, regifting is always OK as long as you don't do it within the same circle of friends or family. I like gift cards but usually get them for places I never shop at, like Starbucks Coffee. I got one last year from work for a grocery store that is pretty far away from me so I never was in that area to use it. Well, it finally came in handy a week or so ago when I was broke and needed some cat food and a few things, so I drove out to the closest one and got what I needed. Still have $2 left on the card (from $20). I tell people that they can't go wrong with giving me chocolate! :D

My shoulder was hurting pretty bad yesterday at work. Might have been left over soreness from overuse on the weekend tho. Otherwise I haven't had much issue with it lately.

I have a haircut to do tomorrow morning, and then I need to finish up what is left on the deck and get the furniture back in place. Then back to working on the living room. Now I can get my gourd stuff organized and put out on the porch.

Sunny and calm this morning. Was cool over night but I think temps are supposed to go back up this weekend pushing 90*.

Have a good day! :D
Barbie, Romeow, and Sophie, missing Lola! (and lots of ferrets running around in my heart!)

OMG, Barbie. I have always despised beets - even the smell of them makes me feel like I want to erp.

I can't abide ANY kind of beets - fresh, canned, whatever. When I used to go to a restaurant and be served with shredded beets on my salad, I had to send the salad back, because with them sitting there in a bowl looking at me I couldn't eat my meal!!

Good morning to All - I just looked at my watch - can't believe it is only 10 a.m. We got our Rv back yesterday. Spent time cleaning it - removing all the thieves cooties - they sprayed it with lysol, which set off the alarms. Started loading it last night. Got up around 5 a.m. - had coffee and doing more loading. All ready have 3400 steps just going back and forth. We will leave tomorrow for journey to MX. Will take out time this year. Try to keep to short driving days.
Bill is napping now. Still have to go to markets and drug store. Have almost everything loaded except refrigerator/ freezer stuff. House is clean and full of KILL MOUSE pellets. Sure hope they work.
Will probably go all the way to Quartzsite tomorrow - then spend a few days there to recover from today and the over 200 mile drive.
Need to back up computer and transfer stuff to laptop, then going to take it easy until we run errands.

Thanks to everyone about their good thoughts about my blood test results.

And I do love pickled beets! Put it on my grocery list, but before I go shopping, I need to clean out my grocery drawer and toss old stuff. Have any of you ever had pickled baloney?? It is something almost every grocery store has in the upper part of Michigan, and my dad used to buy big jars of it. It is the skinny baloney that is about 2" in diameter and rolled up in the jar. You cut it in slices and eat it on saltines, or at least that is what we did. Was a great late-night snack. Kogel was the brand in Michigan, but I don't think that brand is sold elsewhere. They make great hot dogs also.

Project today, other than cleaning out grocery drawer, is to try to get access to hospital and doctor's online portals for my aunt in Atlanta. Looking forward to lunch with Liz and Birdie tomorrow and then being on the ocean for two weeks!! If anyone else is in Florida, I will be in the Panhandle for most of November, then at Gamble Rogers near Flagler Beach for the first two weeks of December, and finally at Myakka for the last couple of weeks of December. Would be nice to meet up with anybody.

Judy, I had never herd of pickled baloney. My son would probably like something like that. I looked for it online and Amazon has a jar for $50. Don't think I want to try it that much.

All the talk about beets made me wonder if anyone has fixed roasted beets? I found them really good just roasted with a bit of olive oil. Carol I'm happy your RV is home and you are going to be able to leave as planned.
Sue it does sound as though you have really good neighbors, you are really blessed. We met friends for dinner last night to celebrate a birthday and had a really good time. I was pretty nervous about going but we sat outside and I was glad we went. It is the first time we have been out to eat since March of 2020!!

Barbie, lol, I would need a very tall ladder to reach the second floor of this 3 story building. Vents for all dryers in the building are built into the outside wall. The vent has a flap cover but birds still fly under neath when the flat is open because the dryer is raining. I ask maintenance if the birds die when the dryer comes on and he said yes. All vents are cleaned once a year but nesting birds can creat problems. Go figure.

Shirl, you would thInk that with ongoing maintanaince and hazard of fire from blocked vents, they would get smart like the RV world has, and devise a simple cage to go over each and screw it in place! Like the screen covers we use to keep wasps out of fridge and heater vents on RV! It was our first mod to our class B, years ago and we do get wasps in summer here, but none have ever blocked a vent.

Velda, that is a very good suggestion and I will pass it on to maintenance who are super nice people. Not sure how the yearly cleaning is done but it involves pressure washing in the vent. Not sure how that would work with a permanent mesh cover but it won’t hurt to pass it on.Thanks
