When I left work tonight at 6pm I saw the road I was on lined with people holding flags, several firetrucks and, when I passed the police department, all the police cars were lined up with their lights flashing. The line of people went for miles looking like they were expecting a parade. Had no idea what that was all about. Tonight I found out they were waiting for a procession of the body of a young local Marine who was killed last week in a bombing attack in Afganistan. He was only 22. Tomorrow will be another procession past the schools he attended and then on Saturday will be the memorial service. So sad.
Was reading about the Salton Sea just south of me here. There used to be a military training area there during WWII and they were testing bombs in the area by airplane. Most were just test bombs but one was an atomic bomb that was accidentally dropped into the Salton Sea and is still there. There was no detonator so it didn't go off luckily since it was way more destructive than the one in Hiroshima. Also there were over 26 bomber planes that went down in the Sea that were never recovered including the military persons on board. All are still at the bottom. The Salton Sea is slowly drying up and eventually all those planes, human remains, and the bomb will resurface. Such a crazy story! That area is where a lot of our dust comes from and contains salt and chemicals from the fertilizer used by the farms in that area that run off into the sea from the irrigation fields. Lots of people that live near there have a lot of respiratory issues including asthma. That will only get worse as the sea dries up more.
Nothing more positive to add, other than I love my new robe! Oh, and the temps will be just below 100* with low humidity the next few days!
Time for bed...
