It’s Tuesday

Let's start our day with a good morning here.

It’s Tuesday

Postby Othersharon » Tue Sep 14, 2021 10:43 am

Good morning all! It’s getting later in the morning and I’m trying to get moving here! Looks like a really summer like day before we’re predicted to get rainstorms tomorrow. I have an appointment in a little while so really need to get moving. So not a morning person. Wishing I had a handyman to all on for some little repairs here in the house. I try the best I can but not always with good results! But at least I do try!
Interesting conversation about the roku. My bill keeps going up it seems and about the only thing I don’t want to lose I my internet connection. I can live without cable and landline but no other decent internet provider in this area. So still not sure what I’ll do. Watching the weather reports for the south and hoping Martha is doing okay. Neighbor is still gone and working on power lines in LA from Ida so don’t know how this will affect their work and when he’ll get back home. Need to start getting Lola ready for our camping trip coming up and deciding what food to take and all. Probably be the last trip of the season. I’m just hoping Rascal does okay. That’s, as I’ve mentioned my biggest worry. But so far the weather looks favorable so that’s a plus! Elk haven’t really started their rut yet but that’s okay too. Just getting away for a couple of days will be nice! Okay, need to get moving and out of the house. Hope everyone has a good day and staying safe.

Good morning! I'm also hoping that Martha is safe. Just got here from reading the morning news, it says that this latest hurricane may "stall" over Louisiana. Hope that it doesn't do that. . .

Sorry to keep pounding the drum about Roku on here (LOL - I have no financial interest in the Roku company whatsoever). . . It's just that I think that cable tv has a disgusting stranglehold on television content (which is oh-so-slowly changing thanks to companies like Roku).

Keep in mind that (if you currently have satellite or cable) it isn't an "either-or" situation if you want to give Roku a try. If you receive internet and cable from the same provider, you should be able to eliminate the cable part of your bill (if and when you decide to go with something like Roku exclusively) if you choose to, but untangling the two types of service (internet and tv - or even internet, phone and tv) might get a bit confusing.

https://www.cnet.com/tech/home-entertainment/how-to-cut-the-cable-cord-in-2021/

Here is a pretty balanced view from Consumer Reports:

https://www.consumerreports.org/streaming-media/how-to-decide-if-cord-cutting-is-right-for-you/

You can have both cable and Roku both at the same time (so long as you have a good broadband - internet - connection for the Roku).

And the price of an "entry-level" Roku device is about twenty-nine dollars. That's it.

https://www.roku.com/how-it-works

No monthly fees (unless you choose to add a pay channel) and available content so vast, it is difficult to describe to someone who has never experienced Roku:

Puppy videos? Check. All-news-all-the-time? Check. Full-length documentaries about YOUR favorite topic (whatever it might be) Check. How-to 'fix it' videos for whatever you might own? Check. Dramas? Check. Nature shows? Check. Gardening shows? Check. Travel shows? Check. How-to RV (and just about anything else 'how-to' you could imagine)? Check. Weather shows? Check. Movies? Check. Tv shows? Check.

Sports? Hrm. I will confess I don't know about sports. I have exactly zero interest in sports in general, the same amount of interest in sporting events specifically: none. Zero. Zip.

On the other hand, there are, literally, thousands of options of what you might like to watch - for free - on Roku. If you want to watch things like Netflix, ESPN, the networks, etc. - you can watch these through your Roku also, but these require a monthly fee. I, myself, have never felt the need to shell out for any kind of pay channels (except for a very brief flirtation with PBS - @ $5.00/mo).

And I have used Roku for my television watching, exclusively, for around ten years.

I, personally, think that cable television (this includes satellite tv) is doing it's level best to kill the goose that lays the golden egg. And it is getting there. . .

LOL. Anyway, I'm stopping now.

If you would, please, send some of that rain you are expecting my way!!

So far so good here. I think it rained lightly all night and has continued this morning. The rain gauge only has a 1/4 inch in it. I would have though it would have been more. Yesterday I took a small pork roast out of the freezer to defrost. I thought I better get that in the crock pot this morning just in case we would lose power. I don't think we are in danger of doing that. When I put the roast in I only had one stick of butter left in the refrigerator. I have fallen down on the job of grocery shopping. I usually have 2 or 3 pounds of butter because everything is better with butter. So I had to go to Walmart in a tropical storm. lol The ditches are getting full but I didn't see any street flooding yet. The river is high and with a South wind it's not going to drain. I wish the storm would pick up some speed and move on.

Judging by how fast some things load on my internet, I'm not sure I could use a Roku. My sister's granddaughter was using something when she was her. I'll have to ask her what they were using to watch movies. You are right about them killing their business with the high bills. I know I'm tired of them. What irks me is that every time I call them I know I'm talking to someone in India.

The house is smelling good from the roast but it's not going to be ready for an hour. I'm ready now.

This hurricane does not seem to be as strong, but it does seem wider and to be headed through where Martha lives, so hglad she is OK. And butter is certainly a good reason for going out for groceries in a hurricane!

Had a very lazy day yesterday. I am at Seven Points Campground in southern PA, on the way to Gettysburg. It is a COE park and very nice, as almost all COE campgrounds are. It has very wide and long campsites, covered with large white gravel with a smaller gravel on the patio areas. Electric only, but that is OK. I also noticed when I filled my water tank at the dump station when I came in that they had a big recycling area with a bin divided into the types of recycling. I did not stop then, but will on my way out tomorrow because I have several bags of plastic bottles. I have not had a place to dump them because my son's city is now picking up recycling only every two weeks, which means their recycling is full, even though my son bought one of those can crushers. And some campgrounds are eliminating recycling bins because dumb campers are not bothering to read and are putting regular trash in with the recycling, which means it will all get dumped as trash!! Places need to use containers for recycling that look completely different in order for people to use them properly.

And I just got confirmation that my new mattress is ready for pickup in York, PA! Yea! :D Will get it tomorrow on my way to next campground.

Sharon, if you pick up a cell line with Visible, and I could give you a code to get your first month for $25 and another code that would give you a link to a group to join to continue getting it for $25 and use that phone as your hot spot, you'd be able to stream with Roku as much as you want as long as you get a signal with them. That's what I'm doing and it's well worthwhile. The reason I say to get another line is because if you aren't getting a good signal with it, it's only $25 you'd lose. Visible is owned by Verizon, so works lots of places. I wish I'd known sooner.

Walmart run over. Only one item they didn't have. Well plus the one that I had to substitute in advance, but that substitute will work, and the item out of stock want a big deal.

Beth, I generally try to keep up on things, but this is certainly news to me. Sounds pretty exciting, thanks for mentioning it.

So, what you are saying is that Visible doesn't have a data cap?

As previously mentioned, I do all of my tv watching via streaming through my Roku (as you know, any kind of video streaming can really gobble up the data). My ISP is Comcast, and even they have a data cap (of 1.2 TB before one is automatically billed $10 for additional blocks of 50 GB of data, not to exceed $100/mo).

I have never exceeded Comcast's data cap, but am still curious about how Visible works.

Could you give a bit more of an explanation? Thanks. :-)

Just lost my response, operator error! I found Visible looking for a cheap unlimited phone plan, not even thinking I could find unlimited, truly unlimited, data with it. This summer in streaming hours and hours every day. Even when I'm not watching lol I just went into my Visible app and found a link to offer friends a $5 first month. So if you want to try it, it's pretty darn cheap. No contracts, etc. I do have a second phone on another plan, but will probably eventually drop it. That's because full-time traveling has meant I've always got dead areas and having two different plans meant I hit less of them.

Here's the link for a $5 first month... Available to anyone who might me interested.
https://www.visible.com/get/3qwQpq, it has all the info you need to know about joining Visible. When you use my friend code, 3qwQpq, you’ll get your first month of service for only $5!

If you do it and want to stay, I can give you a link to get the rest of your months at $25/month.

Beth when are you going to go to AZ? I know that you are not spending the winter in the SW but was hoping our paths would merge somewhere
I finally bit the bullet and got rid of Direct TV for many reasons one those that used to be able to help couldn't get the dish to pull in the whatever... so last year I totally didn't have tv or last summer come to think about it and then I had heard that the receivers were going to be outdated and probably the dish wouldn't be either then I kept getting conflicting information... and the prices seem to keep going up but you never got the come join me price if you were a old loyal patron....
now I need to decide what to do to have tv as I sure didn't like not having it... so enjoy hearing the information that you all are giving however I truly don't understand it at all as techy I am not!!!!
my dd text me at 5:15 saying that she was spending the night... oops that piece of left over steak and leftover meatloaf wasn't going to work for three ok for two but not three... so pulled out a chuck of hamburger added stuff to it like carrots, onion, corn, pasta and tomatoes decided to treat it as soup tasted good...
did see s smear on the window that I need to redo and a spot that still needs cleaned but when one considers how dirty it looks great...
slept through the alarm this morning only the second time I've done that I don't even remember hearing it
lost a knitting needle somewhere sure need to find it didn't bring any extra's with me and don't want to go replace them here in town they will be so expensive
I had put a container in the cupboard mom took it out as the door didn't close tightly I think so today I tried to put it back to do so I took everything out ended up wiping the shelves and organizing it tossed some lids not matching up and containers being orphans it is one of those things I really hate not being able to find a container and lid!!!!
well need to go play a game for a few
Martha be careful
you all have a good day

Sheila, I'll be here in Utah until late October, then will head to the Phoenix area for a bit. When are you heading south? If be happy to get together if we can and I could show you what I'm doing. It's really easy. And as techy as I used to be, I was afraid to try it lol

Good evening gals!

Nothing much new here. Stopped at the library on the way to work to drop off some books and pick up a couple books.

Been looking on CL for jobs. I really need to find a full-time job soon. I saw a listing for the same type of job I have now that is full-time but the hours are 6am to 2:30pm. Not sure I could get my butt out of bed at 5am, let alone get to bed by 10pm each night. But I will look into it anyways. It is a dollar less per hour and doesn't say anything about extra commission so I would have to ask about that.

Was just over 100* today but low humidity so didn't feel so bad. I should get up early one day this week and get the boxes in the porch cut up and hauled to the dumpster.

Watched to news tonight and am a happy camper, just sayin'. ;)

Good night...
Barbie, Romeow, and Sophie, missing Lola! (and lots of ferrets running around in my heart!)
