How'd the interview go? you ask

Postby avalen » Thu Jun 18, 2009 7:06 pm

Interview went well, but I don't think I got the job, at least I didn't get any call yet.
Lots of responsiblity in this job as a caregiver, and there is one thing I don't like
that is leaning me toward turning it down if by chance they do call. They only
pay 55 cents per mile for reimbursement when you take them to the store, doctors,
etc and thats just not enough to justify all the extra mileage my car will have put
on it, its a nice little car but I have to plan for it to last me a good 5 more years
without major problems. I think its a good top notch company for what they do,
pay starts at 8.50 and raises are .50 raises often. Thats a plus but I still can't
worry about my car. Although my car does good gaswise, gas has pushed up to
2.79 in my area and tires go fast in this heat in the summertime. So, long story
short, if they do call me, I'm probably going to turn it down and continue my
search.
Now, theres a new resort opening up, of the Hilton family and they are looking
for shuttle drivers and valet parking attendents. I could do the parking but I
don't fit the bill for their shuttle driver cause they want a buff guy with muscles.
(not me  ) but I'll put in for the valet parking attendent. AND, its only 5 min
away from me. :P
I push on......................

Interesting,... how is that an item in the job description? Unless there is a requirement to lift certain amount of weight to load/unload baggage, etc. Sounds highly irregular/illegal to me. UPS and FedEx have women drivers,...

I'm guessing they base their reimbursement rate on the standard set by the IRS. I pulled this from the IRS website:

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today issued the 2009 optional standard mileage rates used to calculate the deductible costs of operating an automobile for business, charitable, medical or moving purposes.

Beginning on Jan. 1, 2009, the standard mileage rates for the use of a car (also vans, pickups or panel trucks) will be:

55 cents per mile for business miles driven
24 cents per mile driven for medical or moving purposes
14 cents per mile driven in service of charitable organizations

So I'm guessing that is pretty standard. I do know that a local company that serves a 5 parish area here in LA reimburse at .42 cents a mile and that was raised last year from .38 because of the gas increase.

But, that said, if it is not something that you are comfortable with, then by all means, don't do it. If, God forbid, something were to happen to your auto, that would be an expense to repair or some kind of accident would open you up for legal problems (as well as insurance) with the consumer in the car with you. Just something else to think about. Bottom line, do what's comfortable for you.

I'm so sorry the job didn't turn out to be what you had hoped.
Have you thought about just running your own ad to be a caretaker/senior assistant? One where you could maybe help a person with small chores each day and for errands take them in THEIR car or use their car if they weren't able to go. Many older people just want/need a little help with their day. Sometimes failing eye sight or arthritis makes chores like getting their pills sorted out and in those daily things, opening jars & making sure they have something to eat available become difficult. Then you would get a much higher salary that you didn't have to share! I have a senior friend who needs this type of help and it is hard to find anyone. Also, some just like to have another person in the house for company for awhile. You could set up books on tape or music etc for them, adjust the television, some activities we don't think about as being difficult.
Good luck!

55 cents per mile would cover my costs on the rv, as I average 9-10 mpg. I would think, with your car, that could cover costs and give you a cushion to use for whatever service might come up. However, that's your decision. And you need to do whatever works best for you. Good luck on finding the right job for you.

One of the women that I worked with on the project in May was only working part of the time with the test scoring company because she said that her own cleaning landscaping service was so busy. She cleaned and did simple fix-it stuff for several elderly people and did some minor gardening and lawn care. She said so many of the "ladies" were so sweet, They had always had gardens and now just couldn't manage some of the simplest stuff, weeding, planting the seasonals.
