Catherine and others- about the I- phone. I bought the mini. I love the I- phone and this is my third one. Yes, I keep them for years. I always go with the smallest one because it fits in my hand, Goes in my front pocket and in my purse. I don’t read books or watch movies on it. However, I didn’t like the price. With the cover and new plug which they call a “box” it was well over $800.00. Something that expensive should last for years, but we know technology has a short shelf life.

Morni g Peggy and all. Had a lot of rain during the night, so things are soaked out there. Won’t have to worry about watering anything, that’s for sure. Supposed to be warm and muggy today with more rain/storms later on, especially for the central part of the state. Thty are predicted to have best indexes near 100. Quite a contrast to us and our predicted high of about 82.

BJ, you are correct in your assumption of two classes per grade, one for masks and one without. There are two elementary schools here which pretty much have two classrooms per grade anyway, so they will just make one an all masks classroom. I was just reading yesterday, where downstste in Macomb Coubty, parents are protesting cause the schools don’t have a mask mandate and in Oakland County which boarders them to the west, parents are protesting because the schools there do

Beth, I wondered if something else would pop up in the job market for you. It’s either feast or famine it seems That would have been nice to spend a summer in Maine. Judy, the reason for RV’s not being able to hook up to the water spigots is because it is a State Health Dept. Regulation. People use those spigots for filling coffee, water jugs etc. They don’t want people using hoses, due to possibility of contamination. Hoses can cause a back flush when you fill something like a water tank and it gets full, thus spilling back out of the fill hole and pushes back on the water trying to get in. It can then contaminate the faucet. You don’t know where that hose has been and as Beth mentioned on here in a thread, they also can get mold in them.

There’s a hazardous waste/electronics recycling in town todsy, so want to take up oil that’s been in my garage from oil changes on tractor and snowblowers, some leftover stains, an old IPad that is shot and whatever else I find. Might go down to Hartwick Pines for Black Iron days later. Also an antiques market plus Farmers Market in town too. Busy day.

Martha, I hope you are getting out of Dodge, traffic or no traffic. This one sounds bad. Unless it is going to skirt a tad east of you. But you can’t trust those things. Keep safe.

Morning All, island weather is the same, hot, humid and daily t-storms. Martha, imagine traffic is horrendous so don’t dally getting out of town. No plans, it’s the weekend. Karen didn’t post yesterday so I had a terrible time deciding what to have for dinner. Would like to find a second hand file cabinet so I could organize papers. Would be a good project since I am stuck indoors. Guess I will continue searching YouTube for something interesting. Could clean but don’t wanna, don’t hafta, so not gonna. Be safe

Good morning all. Hard to believe August is almost over. Time seems to move so fast these days! It’s been hot and muggy here the last several days with afternoon and evening rain. Martha, sure hope you’re getting out of your area. Been watching this storm’s progress and hoping everyone is heeding the officials directives. Be safe and keep us posted as you can. Also thinking about you ladies out west dealing with the fires and smoke. So no complaints from me with the weather we’re dealing with. Investors been busy doing spring cleaning here in the house. I’m either behind myself or ahead of myself with it! I need to figure out something for a decent dinner tonight. With this heat cooking and eating just isn’t a priority right now. Pizza still sounds good! It’s been awhile since I’ve had it! Maybe a good Saturday night meal! Interesting reading about the schools and masks. I also am glad I don’t have school age kids. But do have grandkids still in high school and college so the concern is there for their safety. I’m still wearing my mask when I have to be in a store. Numbers are going up in our county and those around us. So no real news here just random thoughts so I’ll just say have a great day and stay safe.

Good morning. Up early as I want to finish painting my shed and it has been getting fairly breezy here at times so cannot spray paint while that is happening. Cant get out there too early tho, ya know neighbors might not like it.

Shirl my dinner the last two nights has consisted of a roasted chicken I picked up at Costco. Had it two days in a row now so time to pick the bones and divvy up the rest to Food saver for other dishes. I like a good chicken, rice, broccoli and cheese casserole. It freezes well too. Today going to make quesadillas. So darn easy to make and I like them better than a sandwich sometimes. I need to go to the grocery store but the one I like was closed.....for cleaning after one of their staff got Covid and died. Several others in quarantine now so the store has shortened it's hours due to staff shortage. Walmart was closed for cleaning for 2 days. Yikes......I like living in my bubble right now.

Martha I am following Ida, thinking of you and hoping you get somewhere safe soon. Close to Katrinas anniversary, very scary I think.

Well need to get my stuff together to get out there a painting LOL

I just looked at the projected storm tracks for Ida. One of them looks like it is passing directly over Lafayette. Hope this track is wrong. Hang in there, Martha.

My kids do the IPhone thing. I could never quite justify the Apple price point (I thought it extreme, pretty much surpassing my personal "it's a rip off" level - no offense intended towards you ladies who love your IPhones), so I went with an Android phone instead. $200 (at the time) from Target. That was at least 5 years ago. It is still going strong, and I have been very happy with it.

Good Morning to All from going to be very hot Las Vegas. Today and tomorrow 108/9 - then cooling down some. Weatherman says this should - should - be last of very high heat. Though one year it was 115 October 5th sooooo. The Ac just came on and it is only 8:30. There is still some smoke in the air, sky has yellow tinge to it but at least we can see the mountains.
All insurance matters with our stolen and recovered RV have been taken care of. Bill has already bought wood to make me a new box, and has ordered an area rug. Also picked up replacements for the stuff that was in the box. I imaging Bill is searching the internet for new polo shirts. We got settlement for personal items already. Insurance is working with the dealership about the repairs. They probably will not be completed until end of September. That's okay, don't have to worry ab out it being in storage lot. The community where we live is talking about putting a big chain across the entrance to storage lots instead of cameras or gates. Have they never heard of bolt cutters...
Did some work in yard and around house last couple of days in preparation for "4 sided inspection" but I know they will find something. They always do.
I finished my wall hanging quilt I think. Bought some fabric paint to add a few details and some shading. Now to figure out where to put it.

for some reason I can't get a good picture of it that doesn't look crooked. Now have to figure out something else to keep me busy.
Racing on TV today and soccer tomorrow and I just started another new puzzle.
All schools here require masks on every one. One has already shut down and gone to on line learning. Overall rates here in Vegas are going down thank goodness. But imagine the Labor Day Weekend will change that. To get into any concert you MUST be vaccinated. Same for sporting events. Most resort hotels are requiring all employees to be vaccinated or they will have to pay for testing every week. Went to grocery store yesterday -we have never stopped wearing masks in stores - as we went in there was an employee standing there stopping people without masks and giving them one. Not letting them in if they refused. Wouldn't want his job. I am so sick of this mess, the heat, and the drama in our lives. And watching TV is out of the question - well except for races and soccer!

Yeah, as though bolt cutters wouldn't work in about ten seconds. And if the bad guys forgot to bring their bolt cutters, why, they could just hop the chain and break into any RV they might choose, removing all of the contents therefrom. For "resale", so to speak. Sheesh!

Carol, as I said in a previous post, I really like your "city" quilt. Do you ever sell any of your quilts?

Just read an article about an elementary teacher in CA that took her mask off to read to the class. Turns out she had Covid and ended up infecting 22 of her students!! I hope she gets fired!

Just drank a can of my V-8 Energy drink so hopefully I will get a burst of energy soon and get my butt out of bed! It looks very windy out today. I have heard palm fronds hitting the roof.

Will wash my hair and head over for my haircut. Am thinking of growing it out again but need to get it cleaned up a bit first. It gets pretty uneven after I have cut it myself a few times (or more ).

My paychecks are looking better than I expected. I must be making decent commission on my work on top of the hourly pay. Still just covering my monthly expenses tho but not bad for part-time. If I can get more haircuts as we get snowbirds back here, that will help a lot. And cooling down will help too. I spend about $200/mo now just for gas for work and back. I have to run the AC on high when it is 115* as I am going down the freeway for the first 15 minutes. I am sure that is sucking up a lot of gas right there! Am thinking about letting the Jeep run in the driveway for a bit until the inside is cooled down comfortably before I leave so I can turn down the AC some before I start driving.

I really really slept in this morning, but when I did get up, I started a loaf of bread. I used to make two loaves, but now only one because I don't have space to freeze it or anyone to give the extra loaf to.

I have been reading my dad's old journals. Most is pretty dull stuff, like who stopped by, and what they had for each meal. My mother had a broken leg at that time and spent a long time in the hospital and then at home with a cast on her leg, so my dad did all the cooking and cleaning. He enjoyed cooking, but admitted he did not like cleaning up--no dishwasher in our tiny kitchen! Anyway, he was making their favorite meals like a roast, spaghetti, or stew or whatever, but most important is that he was baking two loaves of bread every couple of mornings and giving a lot of it away to neighbors or visitors. He and my mother baked bread often when I was growing up, and I learned to bake it when I was about twelve.

He was the oldest child of seven, and his mother was sick for most of his teen years and died when he was 18, so he and a sister who was 4 years younger did most of the cooking and cleaning. He was actually a pretty good cook and also did some canning. He helped my mother with things like tomatoes, but his personal project each fall was buying several heads of cabbage and making sauerkraut in a big crock he kept in the garage. Once the sauerkraut was "done," he and my mother would can it. Unfortunately, I never did like sauerkraut, although a lot of other people did.

I bought a chunk of "real Canadian bacon" (aka peameal bacon) in Detroit and have had it frozen, so that will be my dinner tonight--pea meal bacon on homemade bread! Peameal bacon, by the way, is not the smoked ham stuff you buy in the U.S. It is an uncooked and unsmoked center-cut pork loin that is cured in a brine made of water, salt, real maple syrup, picking spices, and a special curing salt. You have to inject some of the brine into the hunk of pork with a meat injector, and even then it takes four days of sitting covered with brine before it is ready. (I have a good recipe that took me a while to get right, but it takes a lot of refrigerator space for four days, so I don't make it often.) When done, you cut it in 1/4 to 1/3 inch thick slices, and fry it in butter because it has almost no fat in it. Can eat it with eggs for breakfast or put it on a sandwich, as I do. (Need to be careful not to overcook it. Fry it just until done but still juicy--only a couple of minutes per side.) You can buy it in southern Ontario and some of the states along the Ontario border, but only at a specialty store. Warning: If peameal bacon is sold as already cooked or ready to eat, don't buy it because it is not the real stuff. Also, purists NEVER cook it as a roast!! That dries it out and ruins the taste.

Very smoky in valley today. Current AQI is 244- very unhealthy and getting worse as day goes on. May not reach predicted 102° temp, with smoke blocking sun! It's currently 91° at 11 am. I'm staying in with doors and windows shut tight. Thankfully I have a pretty tight house and 2 levels of very good filtration on my AC system. My plan for day includes a walk on treadmill, while I listen to podcasts, something which I haven't done much of before. Need to do 2 loads laundry too. Then time to work on my watercolor stamping painting. I went to store yesterday for few fill in items, so we are good for the week ahead.
I do love my iPhones, and since I keep them an average of 5.5 to 6 years, I'm ok with the cost. Mel always had Android and he liked it but I did not when he handed it to me for something, or when I had to deal with it after his death, trying to reach his friends amd stop subscriptions! He was always having to download various security software due to bad virus on Android systems, something never necessary with iPhone. I just want to get a phone and use it, not be concerned with security, because Apple takes care of that for me. My oldest iPad is a 2010, which this is being typed on, amd never security issue. Paid $800 for it in September 2010, but it still holds a charge and works other than it dropping YouTube. Oldest iPhone, I think almost 9 years old, also works and holds charge, but some features no longer supported, so I replaced it in 2019, with the big format XSMax, which I'm very happy with. Yes it cost $1200, because I buy max memory they had-512 G, but it should last another few years, without even having to take any photos off! 6000 and counting!
Judy, I agree, a seperate water fill spot would make sense as those dumping before heading home, will not be filling but would hold up people who just need water.
Praying those in storm bulls eye stay safe. Out here we are watching the big Caldor fire creep ever eastward, over 149,000 acres as of last night! Praying for our firefighters and those who support them!

So good hearing from everyone here...

The guys at the Costco kiosk got my return/exchange on the iphone straightened out yesterday.
I'm like the rest of you, I keep my phones forever but since my Samsung's screen broke at such an odd angle, I decided to look at upgrades. The new phone isn't costing me much since there are so many trade-in offers right now. I"m still using my 2011 MacBook & know some of my brothers have used their iphones forever so I hope I'll be able to use this new one for many years to come.

Velda, thanks for the recommendation on the Plantronics earpiece. I'll look into it. And I agree with what you mentioned about Apple products - security isn't as much an issue & things just work. I, too, like to max out my purchase, but they didn't have any 512gb ones available so I went with 256 - still better than 64. Peggy, my grandson got the mini & really likes it. Seems all the cell phones just keep getting bigger & bigger. As for using it as a speakerphone, I do sometimes, but don't want folks walking by my condo in on my conversations - especially since I keep my windows open 90% of the time.

Karen, I just made a chicken, broccoli, rice, cheese casserole the other day. Jordi really enjoyed it. And so the food recommendations continue...

Judyb, its cool that your dad kept a journal. We found out that our dad had won awards that we never knew about when we went thru his stuff after he died - even some letters/notes he'd written to us that he had never sent. I'm trying to isolate some things for my kids that they might appreciate once I'm gone.

I'm glad schools are requiring masks here. Olivia just puts hers on as a matter of fact when she heads out to school. Not a big deal to her.
I still wear them whenever I go inside any store - it's just not a big deal to do it.
