August 12th~National Sewing Machine Day

Let's start our day with a good morning here.

August 12th~National Sewing Machine Day

Postby IrishIroamed » Thu Aug 12, 2021 9:06 am

Mornin' ladies~~~
It's National Sewing Machine Day for all you crafty ladies. I had a post started for yesterday's MC, but the PT came and my login time out, so poof!

Dad's ortho followup was yesterday. The fractures are healing well. Can barely see one, and the other looks good, but some more bone growth is needed. He can do more weight bearing and has been shown how to use the walker with more weight. It's more of a regular stride instead of half steps and having your feet meet. He's a speed demon now lol.

I'm bored to tears almost. My days are consisting of wake up, make him breakfast, do the dishes, do exercises with him, let the therapist in and take notes on exercise changes, make lunch, afternoon exercises, maybe an hour free time, make dinner, do dishes, and I can finally sit outside, but with 90°+ temps this week, I'm not doing that either.

Been spending the last 4 nights in the house because of storms. There's a tendency for water to come in one of the back doors because the sidewalk has sunk, so the wet vac is at the ready. Hopefully Punkin and I can sleep in the camper again tonight. I miss my A/C!!!

So, pretty much, typical days of a care giver for those that have been thru this scenario before.

Right now I'm still thinking I'll be here indefinately. Dad has another ortho followup September 22nd and a follow up with his GP the next day. Per the hospital, his GP will determine if he can drive or not. I have an appointment on October 18th to get the TT winterized and then put immediately into inside storage. :-(

Irmi how nice that your piano is at your church. It needs a brass plaque to acknowledge the donation and your hours playing wonderful music for services.

That's it from the Chitown burbs. Nothing even an itty bit exciting. Have a good day ladies.

Good morning, Cheryl.

Happy to hear your Dad is doing well. I helped with both my (divorced when I was in my teens) parents as they got older, but at a "distance", not hands-on. They both moved close to me, I did help out quite a bit, but I never had to do the "live-in" thing. For that I am extremely thankful. My Dad lived to be 97 in fairly good health, and with his mind intact, until the very end.

You are a saint. I cannot imagine living in 90 degrees in Chitown with no a/c. Ugh.

I hear you on the "sitting outside" thing. Summers here used to be fairly pleasant, warm (of course) but not too warm. I have lived in this area for 40 years, and also remember long-ago summers that were not "all-fires-all-the-time" as they seem to have been for the last several years.

Yesterday it was 110 at my house. Mid-100's predicted for the next week to 10 days. I was up until about 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning, the temp at 2:30 a.m. was 78 degrees. No sitting outside for me. And I don't live in the desert - I live in one of the foremost agricultural areas in the world. I need to keep my a/c going 24/7.

I don't remember a summer so hot, with such extended periods of high heat, as this current one.

And California has had it's two all-time, record-breaking, fires consecutively over the last two years. #2 is still burning, and was perhaps assisted along by a serial arsonist.

Good luck with your Dad, Cheryl. I am sure that we are all rooting for you.

Morning Cheryl and All, a storm rolled through last night but didn’t help the humidity. Cheryl, good news about your Dads progress, good bones. :) I waited for the nationwide test alert and didn’t hear a sound. Anita, thanks for the library tip. Will just do a few household chores and read. Another exciting day on the shore. Be safe

Good afternoon Cheryl, Anne & Shirl and all!

Cheryl, I worked only 3 days on & one day off when I was a care giver for my parents. There was always someone with my parents on my day off. My schedule sounded very similar to yours. Anne, I wish things were different for you & other on the west coast with all the wild fires. That teacher was such an idiot! Shirl, we didn't have any storms in Caroline County. The skies were gray but that was it. Barbie, your dress and shoes are both so nice. I'm looking forward to hearing about the wedding.

Steve changed the water filter on the motorhome a bit ago and I washed a load of laundry. This evening we are going to the pastor's house for dinner. The weather is warm here with a high later of 96 with a feel like temperature of 105.

The governor of FL is ignoring the Covid outbreak, so like many of you, we will be back in masks once we return there, if not sooner.

Good Morning, It is hot and humid again here today but supposed to start cooling off tomorrow and be in mid 80's for awhile. Irmi your piano is beautiful and what a wonderful gift to your church.
Barbie I like you dress and shoes they go well with your sparkly toes.
Shilv I hope the humidity comes down and you can go out. I know you must be going stir crazy.
Cheryl can you get help with your Dad? I have a friend who moved to assisted living while looking for a house to buy but I think he is going to stay with assisted living as he likes the convenience of having meals and housework done for him. No wonder you are bored!!!
Annie hope it cools down 110 sounds terrible.

The schools here are having a hard time enforcing the Governor of Illinois mandate that school children must wear masks. I can't understand it. We are in an area with the highest covid numbers in the state and hospitals are filling up and many of the new cases are seriously ill children!! We had 115 new cases yesterday in our county!! I think they should set up two schools as a trial, one for all the kids whose parents say no masks and the other for children wearing mask then in two weeks compare the number of cases. Several adults are ignoring the mask mandates and because of the high incidence of cases people are getting upset in stores with the unmasked. I never really stopped wearing my mask in public but now I even wear it around friends who are vaccinated after being exposed! College students are moving in and school starts next week so numbers will go higher.

Good morning!

Cheryl, very appropriate to have sewing day here! Yesterday I made a satin pillowcase for my daughter and now know I'm going to buy another serger! I got rid of my good sewing machine and my serger when I downsized into the camper.

I've never had to provide that kind of daily care for anyone, but admire Cheryl, Sheila and anyone else doing that.

Woke up to orange atmosphere and smoke is arriving. Can't find an update this morning, but 20 acres lightening fire in wilderness Tuesday turned into 55 acres last night. AQI just jumped from 73 to 91. Nothing like California and Oregon - yet.

Velda, sorry about your knee. Barbie, love the dress!

BFF just texted she'll call soon and I haven't had breakfast yet!

Good morning gals!

Cheryl, be sure to take whatever time you can for yourself. If you get burned out physically or mentally, you will not be able to take care of your dad as well. Glad to hear he is walking better,

The reason I am excited about the wedding and the dress is I rarely ever get a chance to dress up anymore. Love to do that occasionally! And of course to see my old friends. :D

I still have my sewing machine that I have been dragging around for years. I think I will sell it this fall in the yard sale.

I don't understand how so many parents refuse to have their kids vaccinated or wear masks. With the huge surge in kids getting sick, you would think they would really be concerned and wanting to protect their kids from this! I have a friend who is an anti-vaccer and conspiracy theorist who has a son with Down's Syndrome. I sure hope he doesn't get sick.

Off to work soon...
Barbie, Romeow, and Sophie, missing Lola! (and lots of ferrets running around in my heart!)

Shirl~ I waited to see if the nation wide test went to my phone, but it only showed up on TV here. If it was for national disasters, etc, I would have thought it would be sent to my phone also, like child abductions and missing senior alerts are. I seem get those no matter where I am.

Irmi~ I can't figure out the southern states that are refusing mask mandates. Such an easy option to protect yourself and others, but it's such a sticking point, like the vaccine, where folks feel it infringes on their rights. I just pray that alot of children don't die. That would be a very sad wake up call for some folks.

BJ~ there really isn't anyone to give me a break in the routine here with Dad. Other than my cousin who lives 4 doors away and used to stop by dad's daily to check up on him. Although he has offered to take dad to McD's so he can catch up with the other old guys he visits daily. I doubt that will happen tho. I've been asking for 3 weeks for him to put some grab bars in dad's shower. At least the therapist gave me the number for a medical supply company that will install them. If my cousin doesn't do it by Monday, I'm calling them.

Anita~ My mom used to used satin pillowcases for her 'high style' hairdos, but I've heard they also help with nighttime wrinkles. Maybe I should buy one. lol I got rid of my serger and sewing machine also when I sold the house. Sometimes I wish I still had the serger for clothing repairs, but it's an easy excuse to buy something new.

Barbie~ I need to go back and read. I missed something about a wedding dress.

Cheryl, I just searched “why didn’t I get an alert”. There were many who did not get get the alert and FEMA is glad because now they know where the gaps are. Also read if you have an IPhone you need to go to the dial pad, as if to dial a number and dial *5005*25371# to receive alert. I have received amber and senior alerts in the past. Twice I have gotten tornado warnings. Don’t know why they make things so difficult. You can also opt out if you don’t want alerts.??? Why people don’t want to protect themselves is beyond me.

P.S. Barbie you are going to look beautiful, have fun.

Cheryl, I am so upset with the folks that refuse to get the vaccines. And the numbers in FL are crazy! I don't understand their thinking and considering that 95% of the people hospitalized for Covid are unvaccinated, that alone should show them what they need to do. The FL governor will be suspending pay for teachers, supervisors mandating the wearing of masks for students. Oh geez.... BJ mentioned having 2 schools. One for vaccinated and the other for the unvaccinated, and see the results. What a wonderful idea!

Good luck with the care giving of your Dad. Take every spare minute you have to breathe. The three days I spent with my parents, like you, was round the clock. My parents didn't like it when I left, but I needed the break and wanted to see Steve, as well.

Barbie, love your dress and shoes. Where is the wedding?
I am very happy to be home. It was fun being at camp and watching the little kids play. However, the difficulty breathing was no fun.
Cheryl, you weren’t on the road very long. I can understand your Borden. My parents got sick and died. No long term care involved. Lyn

Power went out at yesterday's campground, as I posted late last night. It had been 88 during the day but then dropped to 73 and stayed at 74 all night. Luckily, we had a breeze off of Lake Erie so sleeping was not too bad, but the humidity was horrible. I had all my windows open and just felt damp all night, plus I was worried about bugs because my screens do not fit well.

Anyway, the power was still out this morning and with 700,000 people without power in southeastern Michigan, they were estimating it would take several days to get it all turned back on. Also, predicted to be 88 degrees again for next couple of days, and I do not do well in heat anymore. So, I got up and did some cleaning and putting stuff away, but around 2 pm, I called Maumee Bay SP, where I had reservations starting tomorrow. They confirmed that they had power and that my site was also available tonight, so I headed over there. Only a 37 miles drive, but three separate long backups on I-75. One was due to a truck pulled over with mechanical problems, another was due to lanes narrowing to construction, and the third was a car broken down in one of the two lanes on a construction area. Poor lady had no place to move car. It took me almost two hours to drive the 37 miles! Now I am all set up and enjoying the cool AC going!!

Because I am an Ohio resident and a senior, a weekday site with electric costs me only $14.50, and a weekend site is only $27, so that is a good deal. And the Michigan campground gave me a refund because of lack of power.

My tasks for the next few days are to dig out stuff from my "basement" and toss or put as much as I can in my son's basement. When I get to his house in a week, I am also going to go through all the bins I have stored there. Need to get rid of the stuff I am carting around or storing for nothing. And one thing is also a sewing machine! It was a cheap one, so it will be a donate. And Ohio SPs have laundromats, and my site is close to it here, so laundry tomorrow when it will be slightly cooler. Yea for clean clothes!

I just read an article from a Phoenix online paper that 4 police officers have died this week from Covid. None had been vaccinated. In fact, reading the article most of their police and first responders haven't gotten vaccinated. I don't understand these people at all. I guess one of the officers, shortly before dying, begged fellow officers to get the vaccine. Hopefully they'll listen now.

Barbie, I love the dress and shoes.

Well, I'm currently without power. The parks out. No idea why. The good part is I'm cool enough with windows open as some clouds have come over since the power went out and the very light breeze just got stronger. I probably should use this time to exercise my generator and will if it's still out when I want to fix dinner.

Smart move Judy, to make the move, even with the dreadful traffic.

What I should have added was that I had tent campers right next to me, on the side of the motorhome where my generator is located. I used it this morning when they were gone, but I would not feel comfortable using it during the night. I know a lot of people do not like the constant sound of a generator, so I try to be considerate. The deciding factor was also that the sun came out this morning and really started to heat things up. By the time I left, the campground was only about 15% occupied.

Judy, when you start tossing stuff, make a list or take pictures. Ask me how I know to do this! :) There are still things I must have tossed after 10 years that I can't believe I did that! Actually hoping when my daughter gets Christmas stuff out, she'll find a couple more of my totes.
