Spending my days painting and doing one or two a day. I got good news last night when I checked tracking on the Chinese stamp I ordered from China. This is the square, red ink stamp seen on Asian artwork and will have my name in Chinese characters. Early estimates were it wouldn’t arrive until mid-June. However, it arrived in San Francisco yesterday and should make it to my home by Wednesday. I’ll finally be able to complete my previous paintings to make them look more authentic.

Shirl, I sent you a PM.

I have one of those stamps but it isn't my name. It means benevolence.

Very happy I received the Chinese stamp to use on my paintings today. Slight problem however. I have no idea which is the top so I’m trying to ask the seller in China to let me know. I did a painting today that I’d really like to share here, but guess it’ll have to wait because I want the stamp on it.

Update: I found a man in my neighborhood who is Chinese but from Indonesia. He was able to read one character and was “pretty sure” which is the top. I think to be sure I’ll wait to see if I get an answer from the seller tomorrow.

Just a suggestion, Sandi. . . Um, you might want to find a person here that can read Chinese characters. . . just to make sure the stamp says what you think it does. . . :?

Anne, the stamps on Chinese artwork use an ancient seal script that cannot be read by most modern Chinese. I’m trusting the seller to have used my preferred wording but the problem is knowing which is the top. My neighbor recognized one symbol to mean “stamp” and showed me which was the correct orientation for it. If I don’t hear back from the seller, I’ll go with my neighbor’s recommendation.

Here’s my first painting* with the Chinese stamp, or chop, that has my full name. Originally they said my name was too long, but continued to work on it and managed to get it all in. A small amount of the red paste came with the stamp, but was quite dry and didn’t leave a very good impression. I followed some comments online and added a few drops of castor oil which is one of the ingredients. That has helped but it could still be better. So I ordered a higher quality paste and larger amount that will arrive Sunday. I couldn’t wait to see it on a painting, so I tried it on one I did yesterday. While I think the better ink will improve the impression, I really like how it seems to “complete” the painting. I’m also glad I didn’t get the larger stamp.

You are right, I think it totally completes the painting. I love it.

Sandi, I agree the stamp completes the picture. You must be practicing 24/7 because that painting is beautiful.

Thank you Sandi, it gives me perspective as the watercolor I'm working with are tiny in comparison, some only 2x2 inches.you really have talent.
