Bethers wrote:No regrets. Keep them coming. Can you tell me their approximate sizes? I might want to purchase a couple/few if you're willing to sell and they'd fit spaces I could put them. I'm particularly interested in the 2nd of the first group and wouldn't mind any of the others. They really are wonderful.

Beth, I’m so flattered that you’d want to buy one of my paintings, but I’d feel funny taking money from friends. When I started this project all I had was a sketch pad, 11” x 14”. The problem with it is the paper is too thin for watercolor and as it gets damp, it warps in a few places. Even though I’ve tried putting some binders on top to try to smooth it out, they made no difference. I don’t think the one you like would lie completely flat in a frame. After the first few I got a watercolor pad and the paper is stiffer and much better suited for what I’m trying. At this point technically what I’m doing is watercolor rather than true Chinese Brush Painting which is done on rice paper. I’ve ordered a pad of that due to arrive tomorrow in the hope I’ll be better able to learn the typical techniques to attain different effects.

Barbie, you’ve added a lot to my confidence. As I told Beth, I don’t see how I could accept payment from friends. Unfortunately, when I sent a pic of the one you like to my granddaughter last night, she said she wanted it for her room. Thankfully it was done on the correct paper. I’m overwhelmed and hopefully developing more confidence from the reactions to my beginner paintings. I hope I can progress with practice.

If I had a place to hang one, I'd buy one also.

However, I think you SHOULD accept payment from friends and even relatives, although granddaughters might be an exception.

And since you did such a good job on the second one, you ought to try some other versions of the heron. I liked it also. Artists often do a series of a popular art work and even make copies for sale.

I agree 100%. Although with the "bidding" going on here, I know I probably couldn't afford one already.

Thomas Kincaide comes to mind.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Kinkade

He did do many paintings, most of which were then copied (into various versions - from straight prints - both large and small - to prints that another artist would then add clear "brush strokes" to. His is an interesting story).

Thousands of "numbered copies" of each his paintings were produced. Each individual numbered print sold for hundreds of dollars.

He ended up a millionaire before he died at a relatively young age.

Sandi - one thing you might try to get your paintings flat is to lightly go over them, with them face down, with a medium-warm clothes iron. You could try this on a blank sheet of paper first, before trying with an actual painting.

On the other hand - who says they need to be perfectly flat, anyway? Framed and under glass, a bit of "imperfection" would just add to their charm.

I'm serious about wanting some of your work. The spaces I have available are maximum 8 inches tall by 11 inches wide. And that would have to include any type of frame I'd use. You know I love birds so the heron really stood out to me. But so many of those would work in a smaller footprint. (I have 4 spaces available, just saying.). I love what you're doing.

There is an Japanese phrase "Wabi Sabi", which means finding the beauty of imperfection. On most of their art, they leave one imperfect or flawed detail.

Anne and Barbie I agree with both of you.

I don't remember where I read it but the Native American's when making their art be it rugs or robes or ???? would deliberately put in a mistake as non of us are perfect.... now I don't anguish so much when I make an mistake and discover it a row later I just correct the space...
truly Sandi your work is beautiful

That purposeful imperfection, also follows the Muslim faith. While living in Morocco I learned an imperfection was in every piece, especially their handmade carpets. Their reason was: Only God (Allah) is Perfect .it was considered a insult to Allah, a sin, to create or attempt to create perfection.
It's interesting hearing how the concept carries across cultures.

Sandi, it took a long time for my sister to accept $$ from family & friends for her paintings. She is now featured in several juried national art shows & her paintings are always quick to sell. After many years, she finally allowed herself to accept the fact that her work was indeed worth $$ (even from her family & friends) and we love having her pieces hanging in our homes.

So give it some thought as I think most of us would prefer to buy an original from you than something we find in a store. Plus there are expenses involved to create & then ship them out.

You definitely have talent so when you're ready to let some of them go, just let us know.
And be sure to let us know when your work is featured in local art shows. ;)

Much needed rain here this afternoon in the San Francisco Bay Area. Good time for painting practice. I sure wish I could find a class with a native Chinese instructor, but there just aren’t any in my area.

must be someone out there.... maybe in China town.... trying to think of some place that you could call that may have information that isn't easily found like a art's center
you are doing beautifully without but understand the desire to learn from a master

Have you contacted the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco? Just a thought.
