Dog plans?

Postby Cudedog » Sat Feb 27, 2021 10:59 am

Good morning, everyone.

Where is everyone? Looks like a slow news day on here. . . and that's probably a good thing. Hope all of you are doing well.

Question: Those single ladies on here. . . none of us are getting any younger. . . what kinds of plans (if any) do you have in place for your pets were you to become suddenly incapacitated? What to do, and when to do it? Before, during or after?

Just mulling over the "interesting" vagaries of life this lovely and crisp Saturday morning.

Sun shining, blue skies here. Might top out low-to-mid 70's. Getting ready to go outside to soak up some rays.

I'm enjoying harvesting lettuce from my "tub garden". I figured that I would be able to harvest a few leaves every few days, but have been pleasantly surprised. The lettuce is growing so fast I am able to get a nice-size salad every night for three days in a row. . . followed by a couple days off. . . looks like I will be able to pick some more this evening.

I have never been a "non iceberg" person, but the lettuce I have is a mix of different varieties, and I find I am enjoying it very much. It is a lot more tender than the leaf lettuce I have ever bought in the store.

Thanks.

I'll be 80 this month and I worry constantly about my furbabies. My daughter has four BIG dogs so she can't take my four little guys. I was up to seven rescues and lost Sophie to cancer and rehomed the two little bonded chihuahuas that I had rescued to a wonderful home. I have a friend in Dallas that does rescues and she will help my daughter rehome my guys. Daphne, my little princess chihuahua will be no problem but my three boys will be hard to rehome. Nikki has promised to take my problem free Baxter but Winston and Bandit will be difficult. Both of them were abused and had been declared by the shelter nonadoptable. Both of them are total love babies now BUT they are both markers and need to wear bellybands. Most people want trouble free dogs but I always took the guys that were going to be killed. Bandit is terrified of men and tries to bite when my son-in-law comes up (sometimes I want to bite him too) and Winston is slow to warm up to anyone. He growls when scared but has never tried to bite altho I muzzle him at the vets office cause his growling sounds pretty serious. If they are old I might have to have them euthanized when I die. I do have a friend here who has agreed to move into my house when I die and take care of my babies until new homes have been found for them. She has stayed and taken care of them when I went on a trip to New Mexico with my daughter.

I've always tried to have plans. It's even harder being on the road. Peaches would have found her way to my bff's and her husband while he was alive. Ty will, if the worst happens, either go with a friend of mine here in Benson who he adores, or, most likely, return to the founder of the group I adopted him from, whom he also adores and who will find him another home. I trust both of these people to do the right thing. They both love him and he loves them.

My son would be happy to take my dog. I don't know what would happen to my cats. Two of the house cats are about 15, two are about 12 and the two younger ones want to be outside all day and just sleep in the house. There are 16 barn cats. About half of them are in the 12 to 13 year age range. I don't take any more on purpose but just about every year one will show up. My neighbors will feed the outside cats for me if I'm gone a few days but they don't really like cats. If my son wants to continue the cattle arrangement and pay for the food the guy that has the cattle would feed them since he comes almost every day.

Anne, you all are making me think about planting some lettuce in a couple of the tubs I have. I would have to make wire covers or the cats would use them for litter boxes.

Karen, I had to laugh about you bitting your son-in-law. I know a couple of people I would like to bite. lol

Now you are all making me miss my lovely raised beds I lost. This yard is going to need some help before I can really plant much. Anne I like iceberg lettuce too. I grew some butter and green leaf lettuce and it was real good. I like the butter lettuce alot. I do have a small square patch I am going to fix up to plant some tomato plants. A neighbor did tell me there are deer here but I havent seen any signs of them so I will plant some anyway and hope for the best.

Ordered a bunch of paint supplies from Home Depot. I was going to go get them today but got involved in spackling the 5 million holes everywhere LOL I want it to be good and dry before I wash the walls. So will pick it up tomorrow. Was researching best primer for VOG (vinyl on gypsum used in mobile homes) and now I am more confused than ever LOL so will just buy Kilz all purpose. Unless someone has something else to add.

I need to go over to the Motorhome this week and check the engine battery water level as it is the only non AGM battery. Then will silicone the steps, graphite the lock that can be sticky after a while, get my small tool box out of there. The people who bought it are coming to get it next weekend and they are super excited. I will miss it but for now this is a good thing, I have so much I want to do around here and camping here is hard to get spots and my time is limited.

I have plans for my pup if something happens to me. My friend Laura will take her. I hope I outlive her tho as she will be my last animal I am pretty sure.

Okay more spackling in the bedroom now

I hadn't really thought of it but if Shadow is still alive and I'm not I think the kids will do what is best at this point in
time I doubt that he will survive very long anyway... he sleeps the day away hard of hearing isn't seeing well and gimps along

My daughter promised to take Lark with her if I was no longer able to care for her. Because Lark comes from a responsible, ethical breeder, I would need to clear any future placement with her breeder. Part of the agreement with responsible breeders is generally that their puppies/dogs will come back to them if something happens. Most of the breeders I know set that expectation. They then either keep the dog themselves or re-home them with the same understanding. There is a reason you don't find many English Cockers out on PetFinders..... It is a little harder for the Goldens because of their popularity and number of back yard breeders in it for money.

It is a comforting thought though to know that there are caring people behind all my present pack that would not hesitate to step in and do for Lark, Audrey and Jane in the dogs best interest...... I say that after Jane just spent almost 4 months living back with Cindy, her breeder.

We have a trust set up in our will but...no one designated to take them. The executor I'm sure will find them good homes. Emma's trainer would take her as she a co owner on the registration. She and her husband love Emma as much as we do.

My cousin by marriage said that she would take mine if something happens to me, providing she doesn’t go before I do as she is older than I am. But my two pups are getting older too. Piper turns 6 July and Molly is 7 October. So there time is getting shorter too. My Sassy y was just turning 12 when I sent her to Rainbow Bridge she is the oldest of all my collies I have ever had. My other ones I have lost anywhere from age 8 on due to various health issues. So hard to say how are these two will be around yet. I don’t know if I will get another dog after these two are gone or not, just because of the what’s going to that happen to the dog thing. Time will tell.

I just spent 4 days in the hospital due to Afib . My neighbor took care of my dog and cat but if I die while here in AZ I have made arrangements with local shelter to take them and find them a new home.
My neighbor would take them but does not have a fenced yard.
