CB Radios?

Postby mtngal » Tue Jun 09, 2009 8:24 pm

The thread about HAM radios got me to thinking about CB radios again. I remember them as very popular in the 70s. We lived at a remote lake with log trucks, campers, and day visitors on the road. It was pretty entertaining to listen to the chatter. But also useful when there was a problem on the road. So, I was thinking it might be good to have for those long drives across Highway 10. Do any of you carry CB radios?

I don't have one (yet?), but I've been eyeballing this inexpensive little number ($54) from Walmart:

Just saw it on Amazon for $40, free shipping, no tax. Those extra bucks could be put toward a nice mag mount antenna...

We have a CB radio in the motorhome, one in our truck and a handheld we often use when we team up to park the coach. We drove 2 vehicles at times and it came in handy to help each other out in traffic. It can be useful to keep up with traffic situations. We did not chatter with the truckers on channel 19 as they can get too gross and disgusting for me. We chatter with eachother on another channel. The truckers really don't want anyone but them on channel 19.

We have a base station in the house as well as a couple of power supplies for mobile radios that he uses in the truck and in the house. I don't have a CB in my car, music is just fine for me :D Then he also has his super wack packed radios from http://www.radioactiveradios.com that he uses for competition. He's always looking on the puter for modifications to do to his radio's  Keeps him busy I guess.

I had CB's in all my motorhomes but this one and I miss having one. I have so many wires in the nose cone that I haven't made up my mind to add something else. I have a portable one but it doesn't have much range. I like to listen for trouble ahead to try to keep out of traffic jams.

Sorry, I won't have them in my vehicles. Traveled with a friend with one and hated the constant chatter and garbage constantly on them. I do have a pair of walkies, and use them when traveling with others. They worked great with Sparkle and me in NM and now the gang of us on my AK trip are using them.

In today's times, I wouldn't want to use a cb and get help from most of the truckers out there. Still are some good ones, but not like the old days -

I ran CBs back in the 70s,... base radio and "Starduster" antenna at the house and mobile Cobra in the car. Was fun,.... and that was all. Gave it up when we started getting a lot of "skip"...... you know, that annoying stuff from MX or South America.... "Cique, Cique,....jabber jabber jabber!" Now I have my cell phone for emergencies and walkie talkies if more than one rig traveling together. That's enough.

Ernie was really into CBs when we were a "young married couple", traveling back and forth when first in the Army.....but that was over 30 yrs. ago....we have walkie-talkies....have used them when traveling with others or to control the grand-kids in the campground...you know, "Check in every once in awhile, or you'll be spending the afternoon sitting on the deck" thing..... ;) Also used them on a couple trips to "Mickey's House"......Sold alot of CBs when I managed at Radio Shack.....also the walkie-talkies.......but to answer the question....we don't use them.......

Got one - don't use it often, but I did install an antenna for it. I prefer to use the walkie-talkies when traveling with another rig, but when going with a group they usually want to use the CB. I don't have a place to mount it comfortably either, so I just keep it under my seat. When I need to use it, I plug into the 12V outlet (cigarette lighter) and either set it on the floor beside me or stick it in my opened storage console. I prefer a background of music rather than static or chatter!

We, too, have had CB's for years whenever we traveled and I still remember our call numbers (KEX2454) back in the days when it was regulated. My husband's handle was Ambassador and mine was Squaw Kitten (don't ask). Can't tell you how many times DH would forget to turn the darn thing off and we'd hear a voice in the middle of the night!
