MEMORIAL DAY 2020

Had to open this for today. I am finally in Ohio staying at a campground near my son's condo in Sandusky, home of Cedar Point. We took a boat ride out there yesterday, and it certainly looked strange. I am certain that this is the first Memorial Day weekend in its 150 year history that it is closed and quiet.

I am in the motorhome still this morning getting some work done, but will head over to their condo soon. They have a boat slip right in front so it is easy to go for a quick or long boat ride. The campground I am at is old and with small spots, so it was horribly crowded yesterday, but substantially more than half the people left this morning, so it will be a nice evening and tomorrow here. Then on to next place closer to their permanent home for the next 10 days or so. I really like empty campgrounds, but guess I will have to get used to families on weekends this summer!

Irma, congrats on the new site for your motor home. Also, I have been reading several books that take place during WW2. So I was especially interested in the story of relatives living Germany prior to the arrival of the Russians. It’s GOOD they got out. My relatives left in 1882, but I never asked why. (Darn it). My Grandmother was born in New Stettin. Once, at the German house of hospitality, I mentioned that, and she said, Poland. I’ve read that the part of the border in that area used to go back and forth between Germany and Poland. My Grandmothers Mother maiden name was Maas. I think it’s great if I have Jewish blood. Could that be why they left Germany when they did?
Older daughter and I went over yesterday and visited with younger daughter. Very good visit.
I read a you can tell how old people are when they use real words when texting! So true.

Good Afternoon All, Spent the morning reflecting on this holiday and the past. My dad and his three brothers were World War II vets. I did send a greeting to a friend and veteran from the RVing Singles group. On my first scary Rv trip and singles get together, I was greeted by the nicest man Rich/sparky. We have remained friends for many years and he is still rving. Going to be a quiet day, not like those in the past. There is always tomorrow. Be safe

It is noon here and I am still laying in bed. Woke up at 7:30, checked on the internet for a bit and then fell back to sleep until 11:30. No guilt since it is a holiday!

My chicken fried rice dish is easy! The secret ingredient is Yum Yum sauce. Just add that to the fried rice (home made or packaged) and mix it in and that is it. Eat it warm. I think it is also known as shrimp sauce but doesn't have any shrimp in it (which I had to check on when I first heard about it because I don't eat seafood). The sauce is found in the Asian food isle at WM. Be careful tho. There is a "hot" version that I accidentally bought once. They look almost exactly alike, so read the labels carefully (unless you like hot and spicy! It is just as good but has a definite bite to it!). Quick and easy and really tasty! I did discover it is better to eat right away than later on. I discovered that rice isn't like other food. It doesn't get better the next day.

Maya is really biting me a lot now (playing, but it hurts with her razor sharp teeth! ). I hate yelling at her all the time. (When she calms down and licks me, I really reward her for that).I just ordered a new toy for her on Amazon that I saw an ad for. It is a stuffed fish that flops around. Am hoping that will keep her entertained better than my poor chewed up arm! Once she gets tired, she is very sweet and curls up on me, purring and gives me kisses.

No one in my immediate family was ever in the military, other than grandfathers and 2 uncles that are long deceased. My older brother didn't have to go to Vietnam due to severe asthma. I have a male cousin who is his age but not sure why he didn't get drafted then. I know he has some health issues too so that may be why. No one else has ever been interested in serving. My mom had lots of boy "friends" in high school who were in WWII and most of them never made it home. She wrote to them all the time and got letters and photos back from them. There was one who she may have ended up marrying if he had come home, He sent photos from the Philippines and I still have a few of those. He sent her a grass hula skirt once and there is a photo of her wearing it. She always hated that photo and one time my cousin who lived up in a small town in northern MN, had the photo put in the local newspaper with an announcement of her birthday (my mom was living up there at the time). My mom didn't see the humor in that at all! I love that photo! I need to find it and frame it. (sorry Mom, but it really is cute!

I better get up and do something. A little warmer today. Will be 115 or higher by Thursday. I may have to try out my new swim suit this week!

Good afternoon. Thought I would check in on this Memorial Day afternoon. Been busy but time to stop for the day. The temps are in the mid 80’s and I too am one who cannot tolerate Hot weather. It gets humid here when those temps start rising thanks to those Great Lakes out there. Actually it’s the dew ooint that cause it to get uncomfortable. But it’s not too bad as humidity is 44%. Better than past couple of days in which we had a bit of humid and still air and the mosquitos were out in force. Could do much outside as they swarmed around. B Hot and humid isn’t a big rhing here fortunately. Get a few days then gone, then might get another day or two here and there. Right now we are about 15 degrees above average.

But have gotTen some things done past few dsys. Mostly spreading a few bags of dirt and mulch, running errands in town, looking for a few things to add to a crsft project I am doing etc. was going to paint the deck rails on Friday, but my neighbor came over and said he was going to power wash my decks, porch and house for me. Now that made my day Thty just came back from FL not quite two weeks ago, so are self quarantining. I had mentioned to him that I was going to borrow the power washer to do that, now I won’t have to. He’s going to do my garage too. They are the people whose drive I keep clear in winter, so we are always borrowing things and doing favors. His first wife died two years sgo and be is remarried to another wonderful lady.

So today being Memorial Day, I made a quick run to town for grass seed since we have rain un forecast most of week. Got some of it put where I want it and covered with straw mulch. Also mowed the grass or what grass there is. Went to the cenetary to put out some flowers and clean the grave markers. They are starting to look a little nasty and mossy. So I put some wet and forget about it and see what that does. Few people there todsy. Usually I don’t see snybody. But it is a well kept cemetary and I love going there on Memorial Day with all the flags on the veterans graves, flying in the breeze. Our VFW put out about 1700 this Year in all the cemeteries. There are veterans dsting back to the Civil War as most of this area was settled by those who got homestead grants after the Civil War. The township I live in was the first settled area in this county in 1875. So there are some grave markers dated way back at our township cemetery. The first white woman to set foot in this county is buried there.

Shelia, I see you were having some family history going on at the cemetery too. . How nice to see a long lost cousin. Lyn, glad to hear from you. Always wonder how you are doing. Was interesting about your Grandmothers Mother's name. The lady whom my neighbor married two years ago, I think her maiden name was Maas. She is from OH. I will have to check that out. Don’t know if it’s a common name or not.

The gray clouds are starting to come in, so rain will be here eventually. Supposed to be an afternoon and evening thing, same tomorrow.

Saw on tbe news that a couple fron out of state who were visiting in Traverse City, tested positive for Covid-19 Now all the contacts they were with have to be checked and self quarantine. That’s just what everybody’s afraid, of with people coming to the area from Downstate and elsewhere. We will see in a couple weeks if our counts go up. Govenor extended Stay at Home till June 12.

On Edit: Lyn p, I asked my neighbors wife is she was a Maas. She said yes and some of her ancestors came over from Germany. Said she would have to do some research to find out where from. Could be some relation in there.

Didn't do much today. My accomplishment today was to finish a jar of jelly. lol I seldom eat jelly and a jar will be in the refrigerator forever. I was so bored the dog and I went for a ride in the car. I think she thought she was going to the vet and was worried for a while. It was very windy all day until late. I went down to the pond about 6:00 and fished for a while. It started clouding up and when it started sprinkling I came in.

Lyn, I think about all the things I could have ask my grandparents and parents but didn't.

Barbie, does Maya have any catnip toys. My cats have some toys that are about 12 to 18 inches long that they like to drag around and fight with. They are really long, thin dog toys that I put in a bag of catnip for a while. They kick the stuffing out of them instead of me.

Today seemed like another Sunday so the week is going to be off.

you all talking about how hot you were reminded me I hadn't had supper and because I am chilled I planned on hot soup so it is sitting in front of me feeling good...not sure what the outside temp got to low 70's perhaps... inside because I was heat up water to make hummingbird food and doing dishes got fairly warm but when the activity stopped it dropped fast... now it's under 70. Walmart Marketplace brand has a deli soup that I like and get when I am there think it is Cauliflower parmasean
my family on my mom's side came from Germany or rather Prussia pretty much the same place prior to 1850 I think was the year they got married haven't looked at it in awhile perhaps 1860 that feels better my dad's was from England I think about 1857 perhaps... dates really aren't my strong point unless I've looked at the information recently ... my grandfather's father I know my great grandfather but it's easier the other way was born on the Irish Sea and came across the plains in a hand cart...it was a ill fated hand cart company left too late to avoid an early snow many died but he didn't or any of his family when he arrived in Salt Lake City it was said that he was so thin you could about see through him... he lived a long life brought his family to this part of Idaho when my grandfather was about 10 or so then Grandpa homesided over in Jackson on what came to be Mormon Row which is now in the park... so there you have my history lol
My dad served in the Air Force as did my brother, my uncle was in the Army I believe my sil in guard and numerous nephews have served as are two of my grandkids ... my granddaughter and her husband are in the marines and my grandson is in army one nephew retiring soon
we have much to be grateful for there was a post going around telling the number that died in each war although for some reason they left out the civil war numbers... perhaps they didn't think of it because it was a civil war but as someone said a war is a war... but many died for us to have what we have... how grateful I am to them even on the forum we have several that served

I also wish I would have asked a lot more questions about my family history. I was told some stories but don't remember all of them and don't know if I even remember the details correctly of the ones I do. I would like that information for my daughter, but I am not sure she would really be interested anyways.

Martha, I thought about getting one of those long dog toys but they aren't cheap. The fish is only about $11 and I should be getting it tomorrow so will see how that works out. I like the idea of putting it into a bag of catnip first. I got a large canister of catnip (when I did the WM pickup and they replaced a small pouch I ordered with the large canister) and neither cat even notices it. I bought a ball chasing toy and that came with a small baggie of catnip which they do seem to like. I do have a couple small stuffed animals but Maya doesn't seem interested in them at all. My arm is much more tasty!

Didn't get much done today other than some reading. Maybe tomorrow...

Last week they were saying that it could get to 118 by Thursday, then lowered that to 115, then to 113. Now they are saying only 111 by then. Still hot but better than 118! Low humidity tho, so that helps too. Only getting down to 75 at night and no wind right now, so not worth opening the windows at night.

I was interested in the discussion mentioning Prussia. So I went and did a quick search about Prussia and how it was a German state. I then searched St Ptersberg now known as Leningrad. My husbands great grandfather was Prussian and traveled to St Petersberg, where he trained as a military surgeon. Later he escaped to America, traveling to Kansas, where he opened a medical clinic and practiced medicine for many years. He was Jewish, but the Jewish lineage is considered carried through the mother, so when he married outside his faith, he was shunned by the traditional Jewish side of the family. Thus the Jewish traditions and religion were lost for my husbands great grandfather on down. My husband said he once visited cousins in NY or Maryland and they basically were polite but aloof, because they did not consider him family, due to him not being Jewish. I hope to explore more of that part of the family as I get back into genealogy research. Fortunately Mel did do the DNA test, so I will be able to use that possibly to find unknown connections.
