Monday, Monday again

Let's start our day with a good morning here.

Monday, Monday again

Postby PeggyinCT » Mon May 18, 2020 7:56 am

Good morning Everybody from a gray and rainy CT. My stimulus check arrived last Thursday, so I dutifully put on a mask and drove to my credit union. What a pleasure to drive now; no traffic jams on the highway, no honking horns or angry drivers!
I have outdoor seating that is spaced far apart so two friends came over to get some hostas for their gardens and we had tea together. I really miss not getting together with friends. I rather like not shopping....Enjoy today and keep washing your hands. Peggy

I am in Jellico, TN, now, headed north to Ohio in a couple of days. Forgive me if I repeat any earlier posts, but the state of Ohio has changed its camping policies several times in the past month, first allowing reservations starting May 17, then saying no changes and no new reservations, then cancelling all reservations until May 23, and now opening them up, but still no camping until May 23rd, which made a mess of my plans. No instead of heading northeast from Georgia, i headed northwest, driving through awful mountain roads--US 129 and GA 68 to I-75.

I worked to sort through stuff at my aunt's house three days, took one day off, and then another four days, with the result that I was exhausted to the point of staggering. I had a helper who moved and lifted stuff, but also the wonderful neighbor ladies and one husband each stopped by for several hours a day. I could not have done it without them. They are the same neighbors who helped out before my aunt and uncle went to Florida by taking them meals, driving them to doctors, and doing all sorts of things for them for several months.

My aunt and uncle had a 6,500 square foot house with 5-6 bedrooms, plus mother-in-law suite that was never used but intended for an eventual full-time caregiver, 4 full baths and three half-baths, plus a LOT of huge closets, all of which were full. I don't think they threw out anything in the past 30 years. Most was junk, but there were also two mink coats, a ton of Waterford crystal and figurines, and I can't even begin to describe the rest. She had a belief that every wall had to have something on it and every surface had to have several things on it. Basically, we kept family things and stuff we had an attachment to and the rest will go to charity. Except while we were working, we opened it up to all the neighbors and some friends--help yourself and they did. They took crystal, an older cedar chest to refinish, tools and two big tool chests, and anything else they wanted. We did not want it and sending it to consignment was something we just did not have time to do, plus the small amount of money would not have been worth it, so better to give it away to her good friends.

But, after four days, I am finally back to normal. I was exhausted and my back was horrible, but a lot of rest really helped. So here for another two nights and then I will make it to Ohio. There is a KOA just north of Cincinnati that is mostly closed, but allowing only full-timer Covid-19 refugees, which is very nice of them. I will be there one night, then will get to my son's house and finally to a state park near his condo on Lake Erie for the weekend. Whew.

Afternoon everyone. Just thought I would check in and say hi. I made a post yesterday morning to start coffee but somehow it disappeared. I’ve been reading but haven’t been posting.

Having a second rainy day here, so things are really wet. I think if I sat here I could watch the grass grow, literally  The pups aren’t happy because they don’t want to go out. They will if I put them on leasha leash and take them for a potty walk up the road even if it’s raining though  We are under a flood watch for the day as the rivers are beginning to rise and the chances for ponding on the roads and stuff. The riverS won’t any issueS here for anybody though, because they run through the woods and stuff like that. Sothey don’t affect anything Per say. But I am sure they are going to be some areas in other counties where the rivers are passing through communities where they might have some issues.

Been busy working outside here on the nice days. Got a bunch of projects to do, one of which involves painting. But that won’t happen right away because I need a span of a few sunny days before I can do that and after all the rain that we have had since yesterday, it’s going to take awhile for my deck and rails to dry completely. I can however do some power washing and touch up my covered porch. Decided this is going to be the Summer to redo a little of my landscaping, so I have a couple of projects going there. Nothing big though.

Haven’t even uncovered my trailer or anything and probably won’t for a while. I did cancel one of my reservations and also one overnight stay that was tied into that, because a cruise that I had planned to take in July has been canceled. I may have to cancel or move my weeks reservation that leads up to the July 4 weekend too. . The park has to install a new well, and that project has been significantly delayed, so they are not taking any New reservations until July 17. I am waiting to see what they are going to do with those of us who already have reservations made between June 22 and July 17. I am considering canceling them anyway, because I don’t know if I want to get into the crowd this year, with the Covid and all the other stuff going on. But if they can’t get the new well system done by then and they do decide to let us come and camp even if we don’t have the facilities, that could change some peoples minds, especially if they have children.

So that’s about all that’s going on around here right now. We have two more weeks of stay at home which a lot of people at Alban anyway So that’s about all that’s going on around here right now. We have two more weeks of Stay at Home, Which some people aren’t paying attention to anyway. Businesses are starting to reopen slow but sure but with restrictions of course. My church will be starting public Masses again on Wednesday, but we are going to have to make a lot of accommodations in order to fit people in for Masses on tge weekends especially, due to the fact that we can only use 25% of our capacity. We have a very large parish and in the summer It can swell, due to tourists, visitors andcthose who own second homes in the area. Unfortunately we are not going to be able to accommodate everybody. We can however, for now, spread out and attend mass during the week as well in place of Sunday. It will take a while and some tweaks to get things in order. But of course not everybody will be coming back because some people might not feel comfortable with it, and can stay home and watch Mass on TV on Sunday.

I guess I had better get down to the basement and get busy on a project that I’m doing that eventually going to wind up outside as part of my landscaping. But it won’t get out there if I don’t get with it

Good Afternoon All, Overcast day on the island with rain moving in. Judy, glad you have a plan for heading to Ohio. I placed my first order for pickup at Walmart tomorrow. Don’t know anyone in the area that is doing pickup but I’m encouraged by successful orders here. Both beds here are covered with winter clothing. Not sure what to do with the mess. If we continue to have mild winters I won’t need all of the heavy tops. The apartment is much warmer than what I have been use to. Peggy, your tea with friends sounds wonderful. My friend, Edith has a privacy fenced little garden that would be perfect for lunch at a distance. I would like to pitch a tent and stay in her garden for a couple of days. I will have to work on that. Lunch not pitching a tent. :D Stay safe

Judy, am so glad you finally got done with all the house stuff and are feeling better! I remember with my dad's house, we posted a few of the more valuable things on CL and Nextdoor to sell, but the rest we gave away. My brother had a "free" garage sale one day and cleared out a ton of stuff! We just didn't have the time or energy to try and sell everything. My dad's renter had to be evicted and he left all of his furniture behind so we had all that to deal with too. I advertised my dad's kitchen table and chairs on Nextdoor, and a woman came over to buy it. I asked her if she needed anything else and she asked to see what we had. I took her downstairs and told her she could have anything she wanted for free. She and her husband made 3 trips with their pickup truck the next day and cleaned it all out (it was nice stuff too!). She cried and thanked me over and over. :D That is worth more than money.

Had the windows open last night to enjoy the nice cool breeze! Was so nice! Not as warm out today as it has been and tomorrow even cooler. Joshua Tree NP is now open with limitations. Sounds like they are not charging to get in so I might drive thru there tomorrow or Wednesday and check it out.

I might give Lola a bath today. She is so dirty since she doesn't clean herself anymore. I don't even like to pet her because her fur is so greasy and not soft. She will hate me for doing that and I will probably end up with scratches, but she will feel better afterword. She is pretty grumpy lately. I tried a new pro-biotic powder on their food yesterday and today Lola had a fairly normal stool this morning. So will continue with that and hope for the best.

Finished one of my books this morning. Got a few more to go. :)

Enjoy your day! :D

I'm going to continue the hair discussion from Friday----

I had lots of hair even as a baby, so at 10 months, my mother put it in braids and put them on top of my head kind of crossed over. Unfortunately, my mother had a strong belief that the more you pulled on hair as you brushed it, the healthier it would be, so I got a lot of rough hair brushing at a very young age. I was born smack dab in the middle of WWII and Shirley Temple, so I was sent to kindergarten dressed up in frilly dresses and long curls, with big satin bows in my hair. Also, because I was always small for my age, she put high white shoes on me until second grade. Plus, in those days when girls wore only dresses to school, she put two pairs of underpants on me--one cotton pair "for warmth" and one nylon frilly pair which I usually ditched before the end of the day. I was never a girly-girl, and my mother said I was the dirtiest little girl she knew other than her big sister, my aunt, who my grandmother dressed in black bloomers when she was in elementary school because she got the white ones so dirty!

Do you remember having your hair done up in rags? It was more comfortable than metal rollers, but I was unlucky to have very straight hair and a mother who thought I should look like Shirley Temple. I hated the whole getup, especially the long curls and hair brushing. And kids from my lower-middle class neighborhood made fun of me for obvious reasons, so I never went to elementary school before the bell rang, even though I only lived half a block from school. I assume the teachers were sympathetic, so they let me come in late every day.

It was a couple of decades before I even halfway liked shopping for clothes, and even now, I don't own a dress. And as soon as I was an adult and married, I cut my hair short. Good thing I had sons instead of daughters because I have no idea how I would have raised them, except that none of them would have long curls.

Since I was alway trying to straighten my hair in high school and college I slept in rollers that were about 2 inches in diameter. I don't know how I got any sleep and I probably still have dents in my head from them. I finally learned how to style my hair with a round brush and a hair dryer. I had to wear dresses to school all the way through college. I was alway a tomboy so I would get off the bus, change to jeans and out the back door to my horse. When I drive by the college in Lafayette I just shake my head at what they wear to class. In South Louisiana schools have dress codes and most have uniforms. My grandson is going to high school in New Jersey with long hair, a beard and ear ring.

Didn't do much today. The vet had told me he was going out of town for a week and Sugar's medicine runs out on Wednesday. I called them and went to pick up more medicine so I wouldn't have a problem while he was gone. Went to Lowe's to return some pipe caps that were the wrong size. That place is alway packed. The only two big stores in town are Walmart and Lowe's.

The weather was so nice today. The batteries died in my indoor/outdoor thermometer so I don't know how warm it was. I should have gone fishing. My sister is wanting to go to the lake but she is having medical problems. She was suppose to go to the doctor today. Her family and I have been after her to go now and not wait until her appointment a month from now.

The hair and clothing style came from Shirley Temple, but I was named after Judy Garland. Judy and Shirley were absolutely the most common names in my high school graduating class. Nothing like several girls turning their heads when they called your name!

My name was very popular when I was young too. There were always two or three Barbs in my classes. My dad said I was named after Santa Barbara CA, but he also said that I was named after an old girlfriend of his.
