Is 'garden cloth' toxic?

Postby Cudedog » Sat May 02, 2020 10:33 am

Here's a question that I'm thinking that one of you might know the answer to: Is garden cloth toxic?

I'm talking about the thick black cloth that you lay on the ground to slow down the weeds. I 'found' some of this out in my garage, and am thinking about using it in my vegetable garden to help keep the weeds down.

LOL. Imagine the state of my garage when I am able to 'find' things that I forgot I have.

Thanks!!

I never used it in a garden with edibles. But I found this online:

Thanks, Beth!

I definitely agree that some kind of mulch - really, any kind of mulch - would be better - MUCH better - than garden fabric.

But I have left my garden plans to rather late in the year - can't find anyone that will deliver mulch or bark - I don't have a vehicle I can use to go pick it up myself - and I already have the fabric.

Still debating whether to use it or not.

Thanks for the input!!

Anne, Home Depot and Lowes always has mulch in large bags that you could haul in your van.

I have never used garden cough for garden planting per se. But I have used it to cover the ground around my shrubs and stuff. I have found out after a while that the weeds do manage to work their way through. One thing to keep in mind is to make sure that if you do decide to use it, that is not so thick that the water won’t go through. Plus if it’s black and isn’t covered, that will just make the ground hotter as we all know black absorbs heat, so you will have to water a lot. . Like Velda said, I prefer to go to Home Depot or Lowes and just buy mulch by the bag. I can have it delivered but most cases they require a minimum order and it’s way more than I need.

Be careful with mulch. Cocoa mulch is toxic to dogs.
