House Update

Postby Lotus » Sat May 30, 2009 12:18 am

I'm burning the midnight oil again! Ron and I have been so very busy still selling furniture and household goods, packing, donating, trashing, etc. Yesterday I had a phone call from former co-worker and she told me she'd like to spend Friday night with us and help pack then as well as Saturday. Oh my gosh, she was an angel sent to me, I do believe. First of all, she and DH were in service for many years and moved frequently. Secondly, she loves to pack and does such an awesome job of it!! Of course, we've had fun yacking and sharing with each other all that's going on. And the occasion called for a drink or two! She's now reading and I'm going to do the same.

Ron and I fly to Vegas on Thursday to look at houses, and hopefully find one we like. We come home late Monday night, have 3 more days to finish up around house and we close on Friday!! Then have 3 days after closing to clear out. Once the moving truck is loaded, we'll hit the road to Vegas with our two dogs in the extended cab, and Ron's sister and BIL driving the moving truck!! I'm so excited that I can hardly stand it! I'vew been overwhelmed at times, but just try and work through that. Ron has been going through the garage and the pool house, and still has a bit to go. And I've been working in the house as well as trying to coordinate all the many details, phone calls, etc., etc. Another girlfriend had planned to take a vacation day today and help, but something came up at work and she couldn't take off. I don't know what I'd done without Renee's help. She's made such a dent in it tonight....and we still have Saturday!!

This has been an interesting process....letting go of so much clutter and "stuff", and it is such a wonderful feeling. I suspect that we'll both end up even letting more go once we start unpacking. In fact, I've already thought of some things that are packed and now wonder why I kept them. Ron and I have had many ups and downs, and for him more downs than ups! But we're well on our way! Thanks for support throughout, and for reading my rambling thoughts...if you did!! It's late and my book is calling, but my bed may be calling out louder!!

It sounds as if it's all coming together, Lotus. I don't like moving at all, but getting 'stuff' cleared out would be a real goal for me. I plan to begin with ancient foodstuffs in all my pantries and cellar----clearing out a load a week until the cupboards have nothing but new, usable food in them. Those cans and jars are heavy, and will cost a bit to dump....but there's no point in keeping unusable food any more!

Good luck with your house hunting! I sure do hope you find a place you will love.

Wow - it has gone so fast. Just think - in a short while, you'll be relaxing in your new home with a cocktail, enjoying the DRY Nevada warmth. I'm glad it's going/has gone so well for you!

Just wondering - why Las Vegas? Must have missed it when you mentioned it. Don't get me wrong I love LV - we moved from there to here in Indiana. Bill wanted to get away from the rocks and cactus. Well he sure did that. I really miss living in a city where everything you want is just around the corner, not in the next town.
You should be able to find a really nice place there now. Some really beautiful areas and everything is so new.
Just watch out for the drivers. They are the worst drivers in the States. And VERY fast - 60 on the main streets.

how exciting, and it seems to be going so well, just like clockwork and you'll be
on the road. I was doing some research just yesterday on states to go for my
retirement, seems Nevada is one of the big retirement destinations as they have
no state tax, as well as Texas. I know for sure I'm not staying in Arizona for
retirement, state taxes are just too high and the govenor wants to raise them
AGAIN!

Some of the nicest people you will ever meet live in Las Vegas. The reral ones, not the ones who think the Strip is the only place. Unlike Soos, I loved to move. I'd start packing while DH and I were still in the talking about it phase. I wish you all the best in your new home. The desert has a charm all of its own. The more you learn about the Flora and Fauna the more you will enjoy it.

I'm so excited for you! Such great things to look forward to: new home, new town, new things to explore for a long time. Know it will be great for both of you and the fur babies.

Wow, it really looks now like we are moving! So, so many packed boxes, and still empty ones to fill! It was such a great day. I cannot say enough about the hard work from my wonderful friend Renee.

Carol, in response to your question of why Vegas. We were considering Arizona and Nevada.....main draw was the climate and to get away from our horrid weather. Also to just have a new adventure, etc., etc. We selected Vegas/Henderson because we've got several friends in the area....Delane and I became friends in 1968, and she and her DH retired there from the Air Force. My newer friend I met through my job, and we just clicked! Through this friend we also have some other acquaintances. There is a lot to do there, plus it's convenient for traveling to other places. Everyone says but it's so hot there. And we say yes, that's fantastic!!

We'll be flying out in just a few days to house hunt, and I hope to have a good report on that trip!! Happy weekend to all!

I went to Las Vegas with some friends once and it's a wonder we didn't get runover trying to cross the street on the strip. We could hardly get to the center island before the light would change. After a couple of tries I refused to cross the street unless we went to one of the over the street walkways. Talk about country come to town.

Congrats. This is a really good time to buy in Vegas. Property values have come down a lot - which is good because they were really out of sight. Have you checked out the property taxes - I hear they can be high.

Good luck on finding a place. I have a friend who moved to Vegas years ago. She'll probably never live anywhere else now. Me, I'd probably want one of the outlying smaller cities. Then just visit Vegas occasionally. It's just grown so much. And, yes, I agree with Karen, now is the time to buy - as the prices should be about the best now.

How exciting for you-a new home, place and good friends. Can't see where you'll go wrong-and probably good prices as well. Enjoy your home shopping. I like to watch the various shows on HGTV where people are buying. It's fun to see the various houses, prices, etc. Be sure to buy something that has a pad, with hookups. carold
