Good morning gals!
Still laying in bed listening to the rain. Not a hard rain for now but supposed to be heavier rain later with possible Thunderstorms. The hike to Idyllwlld was changed to a hike right behind us here in the Indio Badlands. However, that isn't a good place to be with possible flash floods, with all the small slot canyons back there. So that was probably cancelled this morning too, since we are under a flash flood watch.
Went to a seminar last night here about the future of the Salton Sea. Was very informative. I guess they plan to let it mostly dry up but try to keep one part of it with water for recreation and waterfowl habitat. I guess there are no longer any fish in the lake since the salinity is 3 times the level of the ocean and killed off all the fish years ago. When I was down there about 8 years ago, there were dead fish everywhere along the shores. The problem now is with it all drying up, the dust from it gets picked up by the winds and blows up here causing respiratory issues for people. They are now trying to find a solution to keep it from getting into the air (the sand is mixed with salt and years of accumulated decayed birds, fish and barnacles). The area also is a bird refuge with hundreds of species of birds, ducks and other waterfowl stopping there during their migration south and north. It is a birders paradise!
It is getting lighter out now and I hear birds singing, so maybe a little reprieve from the rain for a bit.
Have a good day!
