CA governor wants to close 89% of their parks!

Postby AlmostThere » Fri May 29, 2009 1:54 pm

I heard this morning on the news that CA is so far in debt that the "Governator" wants to close 440 of their parks! :o :o
At the same time, another guy in CA is trying to pass a bill to have aromatherapy in all CA's prisons at the same cost that would keep the parks open!!

Several NY state campgrounds were closed this year, and others are being closed by early Sept. (they used to stay open until Columbus Day). So I'm probably going to head east into VT for that weekend. I refuse to give up camping Labor Day weekend!

Hey, we are on our way to CA-don't want to have to stay in RV parks the whole time. :( Guess we will have to stay abreast of the news for that state as well as others which might have to do the same. carold

It's half that number but yes they are thinking about it. Most of the popular, well-paying, tourist gathering parks will not close. WA state has been talking about closing more of our parks.

We lost the Cascade Thousand Trails park off Hwy 18 & I-90 near Snoqualmie which was a favorite stop and close to family last year. Will be interesting what parks close in WA and OR.

This is something I hadn't considered would be happening nation-wide, or even in our own state. How sad it is that keeping us out of our public properties is a way to save money. I wish we could withold taxes for those closed properties that we are supporting.

Our local paper says IF they go through with this idea, it wouldn't start until after Labor Day. So those of you heading our way can still camp in our parks (assuming you make reservations way ahead and pay the reservation fee). The public parks aren't that cheap, though, either county or state. Many private parks are just as cheap or cheaper. Got a few National Parks here, so if you have your pass . . .

Guess all the states are having problems. They're cutting everything like crazy here!

I don't understand the logic in closing parks - shouldn't they be mostly self-supporting thru user and camping fees?

Only the bigger ones are self-supporting - but if the government would spend their money more wisely, they'd have the money left over from those that make money to take care of those that don't. Ha. Kind of like how they use our social security money - for everything but.
